Last night I made my annual New Year’s Day pot roast. It came out so good. But the meat has gotten so expensive.

Yes. The liquid is 2 cups of low sodium beef broth (or stock - either works) and 1 cup of red wine. There is also a tablespoon of tomato paste in there as well.

How much was the roast? Was it prime? Everything is more expensive at Whole Foods but I know that there are some NYC butcher/meat shops that are even more expensive.

It was a bit over 3.5lb grass fed chuck roast. It was $55. I know I could have gotten it for a few dollars less per pound if I didn’t get grass fed. Bottom round was also less expensive. I have used that before and it comes out good. But I have significantly cut down on eating red meat and I only make this once a year so decided to get the better meat. And yes, Whole Foods is more expensive than some of the other grocery stores in the area, but it is a really easy walk there for me. There is a butcher shop in my neighborhood. I haven’t really gotten much from them. I should make a point to go in there and check it out.

The cost of good beef has really increased, but if you get multiple meals out of it, it's not that bad. If it feeds you for a week, it is probably a good deal.

I know that drill very well. Buffalo chicken pizza = yuck. If I go American sushi, it is usually a spider roll or a shrimp tempura roll, with chipotle mayo. Hey if it tastes good to you, then eat it. Smoked salmon and cream cheese belong on a bagel says this jaded New Yorker.

    Philly Roll in Philly.

My 11 yr old is finally smashing actual sushi.
Now it gets expensive.  (Dad, I want two orders of king salmon sashimi, one of yellowtail, and we can split a tuna.)

I actually prefer sashimi over sushi since reducing carbs. And yes good nigiri sushi can be expensive. Try a dish called usuzukuri. Usually made with fluke/flounder but with other white fish and served with daikon and ponzu. I think it is one of the tastiest and healthiest dishes you can eat. If you ever get to Japan they serve fugu the same way.

That’s how I look at. I ate it for three meals after I cooked it and then put four more servings in the freezer. So I got seven meals out of it. I can easily spend $40 on takeout for one meal. So it was worth it.
