Yes, but they said that after they had a copy and had verified it was real. They made false statements that mislead the media and tech companies. statements that those companies later said lead them to censor the material they otherwise would not have.Halifax2TheMax said:* The following opinion is mine and mine alone and does not represent the views of my family, friends, government and/or my past, present or future employer. US Department of State: 1-888-407-4747.
The FBI never said the laptop was “Russian misinformation.” They said it had the earmarks of a Russian disinformation campaign and noted 5 decision points that said the American people need to and deserve to know that they should take it with a grain of salt. Add that the provenance of the data and chain of control of the hard drive is suspect, you can see why. Add in that the NY Post wouldn’t share access to the hard drive/data with other news outlets and you can see or at least you should be able to see that it’s highly suspect. Not that it wasn’t Hunter’s laptop, not that it didn’t have pictures of his junk and crack habit and prostitutes, but that the alleged emails with Burisma purporting to show a quid pro quo. Ghouliani and Murdick being involved should make you raise an eyebrow. Good luck in life, bahahahahahahaha!
I'll admit the Kimmel thing was more direct, and therefore worse. But to intentionally make false statements to mislead the media that causes them to censor items is still a form of censorship in my opinion.0 -
Russia wanted trump in power for a reason. We can argue whether that reason was that they already had direct control over him via kompromat or, at a minimum, that they know he is a narcissistic fool that can be easily manipulated.mace1229 said:

Do you have a link to any allegation that the FBI, “made false statements that mislead the media and tech companies. statements that those companies later said lead them to censor the material they otherwise would not have.”
As I remember it and what doing my own research is illustrating is that Politico misrepresented and misreported the contents of the letter that was issued by the 57 current and former intelligence officials. That misrepresented and misreported information was then picked up by other news outlets and disseminated. Social media companies then voluntarily removed links to the NY Post story on “Hunter’s Laptop.”
Please link to a reputable source that the FBI, “made false statements that mislead the media and tech companies.” Quotes of media reporters and tech company executives explicitly stating that so and so from the FBI told me it was Russian disinformation.
Again, re-read the history of the laptop hard drive, how it came to light, who had possession of it and what the emails purportedly showed (quid pro quo). Not that “it wasn’t Hunter Biden’s laptop”, not that there wasn’t evidence of drug use with prostitutes, nor that it contained emails written, sent and received by Hunter Biden.

They received the laptop in 2019 and verified its authenticity by November 2019.
"A pair of IRS whistleblowers testified before Congress last year that the FBI had verified the abandoned laptop’s authenticity in November 2019."
https://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2024/jun/4/erika-jensen-confirms-authenticity-of-hunter-biden/
(yes, I know that it is the Washington Times, they were just one of the top search results)
In the letter, they write "If we are right, this is Russia trying to influence how Americans vote in this election, and we believe strongly that Americans need to be aware of this."
and " In addition, media reports say that the FBI has now opened an investigation into Russian involvement in this case. According to USA Today, “…federal authorities are investigating whether the material supplied to the New York Post by Rudy Giuliani…is part of a smoke bomb of disinformation pushed by Russia.”
and "Our view that the Russians are involved in the Hunter Biden email issue is consistent with two other significant data points as well. According to the Washington Post, citing four sources,“U.S. intelligence agencies warned the White House last year that Giuliani was the target of an influence opera<on by Russian intelligence.”
The problem is when they made those statements, they had known for a year that the laptop was real and not a plant. It is clear they wanted to give the impression that they believed this was Russian plant when they had already verified that it was not, so that the media would censor the story, which they did.Post edited by mace1229 on0 -

* The following opinion is mine and mine alone and does not represent the views of my family, friends, government and/or my past, present or future employer. US Department of State: 1-888-407-4747.It really isn’t that difficult but in this day and age, it apparently is.
Pages 17-34, pay particular attention to the footnotes, especially on page 18.In June 2024, the Supreme Court rejected claims that the government unlawfully coerced social media companies into removing posts related to the laptop in Murthy v. Missouri.
https://www.supremecourt.gov/opinions/23pdf/23-411_3dq3.pdf
From ABC News coverage of repub congressional hearings. Every allegation is a confession (pay attention to the bold). But Roth denied the accusations, telling the committee that the FBI did not tell Twitter the laptop hard drive was fake or hacked.
Twitter's former Deputy Counsel James Baker, who was fired by new Twitter CEO Elon Musk in December, also said he was not in communication with the FBI about the company's decision to suppress the article.
At one point during the hearing, Rep. Gerry Connolly, D-Va., asked former Twitter employee Anika Collier Navaroli about a request made by the Trump White House that Twitter remove a tweet from celebrity Chrissy Teigen that insulted then-President Donald Trump.
"The White House almost immediately thereafter contacted Twitter to demand the tweet be taken down. Is that accurate?" Connolly asked Navaroli.
"I do remember hearing we'd received a request from the White House to make sure we evaluated this tweet, and they wanted it to come down because it was a derogatory statement directed at the president," Navaroli replied.

But to intentionally make false statements to mislead the media that causes them to censor items is still a form of censorship in my opinion.* The following opinion is mine and mine alone and does not represent the views of my family, friends, government and/or my past, present or future employer.
Good luck in life, indeed.

They received the laptop in 2019 and verified its authenticity by November 2019.

It is clear they wanted to give the impression that they believed this was Russian plant when they had already verified that it was not, so that the media would censor the story, which they did.* The following opinion is mine and mine alone and does not represent the views of my family, friends, government and/or my past, present or future employer. Separate the “contents” of the hard drive from the “laptop.” The purported contents of the laptop and what they allegedly show is “the Russian disinformation” (quotes are mine). Good luck in life being concerned with a laptop from 6 years ago and not what is happening right now in the present from the most corrupt administration in US history.
Unless there is direct evidence to prove Joe Biden was involved in some criminal activity, I don't care about the laptop. And if there was evidence, it would have come to light a long time ago. So its safe to say it doesn't exist.
You never answered my question. Do you think the testimony was false that stated they had authenticated the laptop in 2019? When they say they authenticated it, I assume that also means its contents. They have not found any evidence of tampering to my knowledge. Even CBS reported that "The independent analysis, by two cyber investigators from Minneapolis-based Computer Forensics Services, found no evidence that the user data had been modified, fabricated or tampered with. Nor did it find any new files originating after April 2019, when store records indicate Biden dropped it off for repair.'
https://www.cbsnews.com/news/hunter-biden-laptop-data-analysis/
If they knew the laptop was real in 2019, then they gave misleading comments that caused some censorship. Big tech has stated, while Biden was still president (so not influenced by Trump) that if the FBI and intelligence officials hadn't said what they said, they wouldn't have censored the story.
They had the laptop for a year. They had authenticated itnearly a year early. To release statements that infer it could be Russian disinformation was dishonest, and resulted in censorship of the story.
If I'm wrong, if they found evidence that it was tampered with, then I'll retract that. I haven't seen any expert point to evidence that it was tampered with though, and they knew it at the time.Post edited by mace1229 on0 -
regardless...the GOP was using the laptop distraction to attempt to suggest that there were all kinds of Biden family corruption present, etc. That was the disinformation and was likely partly what the FBI was referring to.
The computer shop guy called Giuliani right? Definitely some legal issues there as to publishing personal information.
Also...I remember seeing social media bullshit about emails supposedly off of that laptop that said all kinds of incriminating shit that later turned out to be Russian bullshit.
The GOP took photos of Hunter's junk off that laptop and presented them in hearings. This had nothing to do with President Biden.Remember the Thomas Nine !! (10/02/2018)

I agree the pictures were tasteless and had nothing to do with anything other than a smear campaign. There may have been fake emails floating around the internet falsely claiming to be from the computer, I don't remember. What fake stuff isn't floating around social media? But that is a completely different issue than inferring the computer itself contained disinformation.Gern Blansten said:regardless...the GOP was using the laptop distraction to attempt to suggest that there were all kinds of Biden family corruption present, etc.
This had nothing to do with President Biden.0 -

Chop chopI bet you can’t wait to be “proven wrong” with anecdotes and whataboutisms. You carry around goalposts like a backpack.Nah can’t carry backpacks as Thom Yorke was right, the accumulative results of gravity sucks.
Those “actual statistics” was the bit of what housing costed a generation ago vs now? I recall agreeing that housing has gone up too much, but the way to get ahead is investing, as the stock markets have (on average last 20+ years) beaten real estate by six percent per year. That’s how to use compounding to beat the real estate market.
Go ahead and put one Starbucks per day and $100 per month in subscriptions into an annuity calculator. If you dont want to believe that average subscriptions cost, let’s replace “subscriptions” with seven takeaway meals per month (or dare I say DoorDash) plus the daily coffee. Roughly US$3700 per year.
Let’s do a future value annuity, calculate that over a 40 year career at the ave stock market return of ten percent. What you coming up with? A nice starting point for building wealth? If using retirement accounts, the tax savings and retirement account loan features by itself after ten years could finance a down payment on a house. (Calculate those tax savings at the marginal rate federal and state). I guess RRSPs work similar. The equivalent of “Free daycare and buses” are sitting right there in the states for everyone to use, but the Zs are too lost in their ideals. It's good to be proven wrong and beaten to a pulp sometimes. I’m sure Mr. Yorke agrees.0 -
Well...if information is coming out saying "X is on the computer" but that is false....that is disinformation.mace1229 said:

Also, I think the timeline is a little different.
The shop owner claims to have given the actual computer to the FBI first. I don't think there is anything disputing this. Before giving it to the FBI, he made some copies of the hard drive. After almost a year of not hearing anything from the FBI, he gave a copy to Giuliani. Giuliani then gave it to the Post.
And yes, it is suspicious that it was coming from Giuliani. But the FBI had already had it for nearly a year a that point and hadn't detected any tampering. It's not like it went straight from computer store, to Giuliani to the Post, and without anyone looking into if it was real or not.0 -
