Get Dave Grohl in to work on any new album, a grunge full circle moment.

Then you can tour with whoever.

As cool as it would be to see Josh Freese, I don't see it happening. I just don't know how good of a fit he would be. I wonder if they might source someone local. I was trying to think who could be good. I know Mudhoney is still making music and touring, but Dan Peters is a helluva drummer. Plus he's in a band with Mark Arm, who in Green River with Jeff and Stone.

Are we all forgetting how many songs PJ has in their catalog and how hard it must be as a new drummer coming into a band like PJ to just "pick up where things were left".

If any new drummer eventually does come into the mix, it's going to take years for them to be able to just wing setlists like they've been used to doing their entire career.

Because of that, I think they sadly go the route of festivals playing the "hits" and then splash in a few songs from their new album with the new drummer.

It's an end of an era.

A new drummer will learn the songs just fine.

I think that what they could most likely do is have a roster of 30-50 songs for a given tour as a main rotating list and then the days leading up to any given show have the drummer learn any one-offs

I think PJ can still make it work.  Their material isn't neccesarily like a drummer coming in having to learn the entire Rush or Tool catalogue

So they wouldn't be hiring a professional drummer then?

But honestly I think there won't be a replacement

That is my take. They might be done touring.
I highly doubt this for 2 reasons:

    1.  There’s no way they let Matt announce  he is leaving the band and THEN stop touring.  That would set Matt up unfairly to be the fall guy for why the band stopped touring.  They would never do that to him.

    2. Pearl Jam’s statement refers to Matt’s time in the band as an important chapter.  That implies there is more to the story for the band.

This is just my opinion, but as far as touring, that could be anyone, but as far as recording and playing and writing new music and putting out new albums, Jack Irons forever!!! Who wouldn't want another album in the vein of Yield and No Code? Even if Jack just writes and records with the band I'd be happy. And if he can tour awesome, and if not then they have plenty of options for a touring drummer. But I would love to see Jack back in the studio and back as a member of the band again. They're just a different band with Jack. At the end of the day, Pearl Jam and drummers, what can you do?...

well yeah....collectively they don't play many songs live so there would be no need to know the whole catalog anyway.

Agreed...it's pretty apparent that they knew Pitt was his last show. They aren't done yet.

The more I think about it I don't see them getting a full time member of the band. I'm thinking probably someone just for live performances. Josh Freese has proven he could do that with the Foo fighters. He would be a strong candidate.

I think any of the afore-mentioned drummers would be good but this clearly is an end of an era no matter what they decide to do.

I can’t help but feel a sense of sadness and loss.

    Ok, here goes.

Stuverud - I think he makes the most sense.  Has a relationship with Jeff. Solid Floor, limited upside.
Brad Wilk - I love this idea.  RATM is on the "tour every 5 year plan", so it should work.  He can make it work, large upside.
Josh Freese - I love the idea of this.  Most upside, a supreme talent like Matt, has done it all.  His time in Foos came to a premature end, he just doesn't seem to be worth the headache he seems to be.  For that reason I don't think he is on the short list.
Here's a new one Ilan Rubin - Also a RNR HOF'er.  Like Wilk, NIN is also on a tour every 5 years model.  If you aren't seeing NIN on their summer tour starting in August, you may never see them again.  He's obviously ready for the big time and would be an amazing addition.
Janet Weiss - No Thank you.

Of course Jack Irons or the Dave's would be instantly accepted, no questions asked.
There's no need to say goodbye

I’d like to see them go the Primus route. Not necessarily having an Interstellar Drum Derby (though that’d be awesome), but finding a younger guy that’s a pro’s pro musician and a fan of the band.

It will not be Klinghoffer as he is not really a drummer. It will also not be Dave A.

The names being thrown out that make sense are
    Stuverud
    Chamberline
    Freese
    Irons
    Krusen

Please no on the Janet Weiss option
