So here they are at this point again of bringing in a new drummer 😕 so next possible live shows with said drummer won’t be happening for at least 2 years? What does everyone think
Watching the YouTube video of the ending of the 5/18 show in Pittsburgh makes me think that this was already decided pre Spring 2025 tour. Everyone specifically embraces Matt at the end, so it sure looks like they all knew.
Great catch. Definitely looks like knowing hugs there. Wow, damn
wow i never caught that. yeah i am now sure that they knew. i feel a little better now knowing that this most likely was not something that suddenly came up and had been known for a while.
wow that end hits a bit more knowing what we now know. Looks like he says love you to them all as well. Matt Fucking Cameron
So here they are at this point again of bringing in a new drummer 😕 so next possible live shows with said drummer won’t be happening for at least 2 years? What does everyone think
The more I think about it the more pessimistic I get that the trajectory from here forward is flat, much less up. Feels like an inflection point.
I'm trying not to go this route, but it's hard not to think this way.
To be optimistic, if they only had 1-2 years left, and that was known.... don't you think MC would have hung on for the last year or so?
I think theres 5+ years and 1 more album still in the band.
If they can get to PJ40 (in 6 years), then they should consider a mega, worldwide PJ40 Tour and then maybe hang it up
I also wonder if this means they’re working on a new album or a new tour announcement. No point in announcing your retirement from the band if they’re just going dormant a while.

Agree and think they might be done.
I was thinking about how much work it will take to get another drummer to learn the songs and everything that takes to really click for live performances, I just don’t see them putting all that effort to keep going or wether they even want to! By all accounts and opinions isn’t Jeff who doesn’t like touring? Why go through all of this process again? The future will tell
I know Matt is a beast but not sure why people think it would take a new guy 2 years to learn the songs if you are a professional who knows what they are doing unlike the people mentioned.

It might take time for them to just get used to a new member I don’t think this band will just jump back on the road for a while, studio is a different story

Yeah Matt himself learned all the songs in only a few weeks back in '98. Of course, the band only had five albums at that point.

"..That's One Happy Fuckin Ghost.."
“..That came up on the Pillow Case...This is for the Greek, With Our Apologies.....”
I think for a professional, learning the touring catalogue wouldn’t be that hard. It’s more about the vibe. I wonder if from this point forward they just no longer have an official drummer. They’ll bring someone in to record, they’ll bring someone in to tour, but as far as the band goes, it’s Stone Jeff, Mike and Ed.
you couldn't swing if you were hangin' from a palm tree in a hurricane
Sad news indeed, MFC is an absolute monster on the kit but I agree with others on here saying they'll continue. They wouldn't make this sort of announcement for one person leaving if the whole thing was over. Hindsight being 20/20, sort of saw this coming when Stone was asked about the shorter setlists post covid and he said something about Ed's voice and how the longer shows affect Matt physically. I was lucky enough to meet him after Soundgarden's show at The Palladium in Worcester 2013, I was able to get a drumstick, he signed it for me, I could be barely talk since I was completely star struck, he was cool, realized I was in shock and was very nice. I've been very lucky to meet many of my rock heroes, normally I'm relaxed but he was one of the few that made me check my underwear afterwards.
On a personal note though, you hear Matt on Soundgarden albums then on PJ albums, sometimes I think they never used him to his maximum/full capabilities. I understand they're two different bands but my gut tells me they didn't fully utilize him as they could/should. I love his song, "Get It Back", one of the best PJ songs, feels like the younger sibling to Present Tense, sort of has a new meaning now. He'll be sorely missed but the band will go on, at their age, they're not going to tour that much anyways.
Josh stepping in makes complete sense and with enough time, he'll be able to learn all the material, he's so talented. The Foos haven't officially announced a new drummer, I wonder if Grohl made an offer he couldn't refuse especially if PJ doesn't plan on touring in the foreseeable future. Matt recently mentioned on Drumeo, albeit in a joking manner that drumming for PJ and Soundgarden at the same time was tough and wasn't the wisest decision, if he ends up being the drummer for the Foos, maybe he doesn't want to deal with that but who knows. Hopefully more info will be available as time goes on.
Dan Peters from Mudhoney would be cool

interesting point...if you aren't really active it would be kind of hard to add someone to just sit around and do nothing but who knows
Remember the Thomas Nine !! (10/02/2018) The Golden Age is 2 months away. And guess what….. you’re gonna love it! (teskeinc 11.19.24)

My guess is the band doesn't know what they are doing next and haven't even discussed it as a group. Thats why Ed was so emotional the whole tour saying things like "Who knows when we'll do this again" etc... Like how they put space from tour end until today, I imagine they'll want to put space between this and discussing whats next for PJ.
But that could be every gap in their schedule too.
I don’t see why you would bring in a legacy drummer to replace Matt. If part of the issue is related to the physical nature of being a drummer wouldn’t you potentially want to bring in someone a little younger? Superchunk just replaced their long-time drummer and they have a huge catalog of music. Sometimes bringing in someone new can add new energy as well. It just seems like they aren’t done and rather than bringing in someone from the past or someone from a band of their era it might be good to bring in someone new and younger.
Not sure what this means for the band, but with Matt turning 63!! in a few months - this tells me that no new music is being made and no future tour talks have taken place.
By the time we might hear new music and get a new tour announcement Matt would have been 65!
I'm happy for him. Hell of a run MFC!!!
As for the future of the band...It wouldn't shock me at all if they just hired a touring drummer and only did festivals from here on out.

Agree and think they might be done.
They aren't done. If they intended to end the band, they wouldn't have MFC retire, then announce the end of the band. They would just announce the end of the band.

Time will tell. Look at Radiohead. Fell off the earth with no members quitting. This band is not one to announce things that are not contractually obligated. I am expecting a long pause at a minimum.

Anyone paying attention knew the band was taking a hiatus, and not to expect much from them in the near future... they said as much about 6 weeks ago from the stage in Pittsburgh.
Drumming takes its toll so I imagine if they want to keep it rolling for a while longer, the next drummer will be 10 to 20 years younger than the rest of the band. I dont think were getting a previous drummer back.
It took them 8 years to circle back to MFC and get a long term drummer. I don't imagine thats going to be easy.
You also dont want a drummer who already has a big band. Scheduling conflicts and what not.
Not sure really.
Generally at this point I'm hoping Matt retired because he wants to retire. Hoping it wasn't health issues that led to it. He deserves a long happy retirement.

Exactly. MFC will be 63 years old in a few months. By the time the band releases a new album, and gets another tour on the books he could have easily been 65/66.
These guys aren't getting any younger. Hell, Jeff Ament might be 65 by the time the next album is released. He's already 62.

I also agree they knew this was in the cards before the latest tour.
In hindsight, it seemed like Ed was going out of his way to compliment Matt throughout the tour. There was even a champagne toast to Matt being a two-time HOF'er at the Atlanta 1 encore.
