What a legend. He got to call his shot. Can't begrudge him that. Saw his second-last show, but it's fitting his finale was on the anniversary of Cornell's passing.

Krusen sounded like he didn’t miss a beat from what I heard.  He’s also mentioned in an interview of having interest in doing some kind of creative project with the band again. Maybe it’s time to come full circle.
I think this would be the best option to maintain the "aura or legacy" of the band.  Then they can still tour with an "Original lineup" etc..

Hiring a touring drummer like a Josh Freese would be fine as it means the band would still play shows, but it also might mean Dark Matter is the last truly great PJ album we will ever get

Hopefully the band will hold open auditions like Primus did earlier this year.
Was just thinking this - doesn't seem like their style, but would be a blast if they recorded the auditions ala Primus as well.
    I agree!

Would make no sense for Matt to join the Foos.  Assuming he wants to tour less, and PJ has been accommodating this…. Why join the Foos who tour harder than just about anyone?
I always thought it was Jeff who wasn't keen on touring so much, but was it Matt too? Regardless, I hope it's an amicable split and he's healthy and well and all that. The band will be fine, eventually, somehow.

Ok. Too bad there isn't a proper send off. Feels bad to me. Didn't read all the stuff though. Good for him i guess.

React: Damn, we've been blessed with MFC for years and thankful for the time he's helped the band continue touring and pumping out great albums.

Respond: Curious if or how this changes the makeup of Pearl Jam as a whole, but okay if it takes a little time for them to recharge and regroup before the next tour or album

Sounds like a possible full album’s worth of Soundgarden material on the way. If they have decided on a vocalist to tour with guessing Matt is going full Soundgarden.
Would you go see soundgarden without chris?
    Fuck that
Sure I would. Cuz I still support the surviving members of the band. There was a lot of similar sentiment when AIC kept going. People who boycotted have missed boatloads of great music & shows.

Just getting the news.  He was there for 27 of the band's 35 years, 7 of the 12 studio albums... so thanks Matt!  For me, if Pearl Jam doesn't get a former PJ drummer back in the fold, I would personally rather see them be done.  We are now at THAT point (they're in their 60s, a longtime member has left).  Don't become one of those bands.  So many bands hang on for too long, keep plugging in new members as original and longtime members start dropping by the wayside.  I just never wanted PJ to become that.  If they can bring back Krusen, Abbruzzese, or Irons... cool, former family members. If not, ride off into the sunset.

Of course, they can and will do whatever the hell they want.  I just look at this band from a legacy standpoint.  I don't want that tarnished. I feel they already should have retired any number of songs where Eddie is constantly pulling off the microphone because he can't get to those places anymore.

How about this?  Farewell tour in 2026.  Krusen plays some Ten songs, Abbruzzese come out for some Vs./Vitalogy stuff, Irons plays some No Code/Yield and Matt agrees to come back for the rest.  Maybe 5 songs each (25 total)?

    Absolutely stunned.

Like many others have said, I hope it is not a health issue and that Matt is leaving on his own terms to go do something that he is excited about (SG, time with family, etc.)

Beyond today's announcement, I am assuming it will be a while before there is any news from the band.

i hate waking up to this news. i don't know what it means for the band or for the future. my only thoughts right now are gratitude to matt for stepping in when the band needed him, and i hope that he is healthy.

best wishes to all of those guys.

also, if this ends up being the end of the band, i want to say it has been great to meet so many of you at shows the last 30 years and online here on the boards.

this band and it's fans have been a huge part of my life for a long time.

Nothing but respect for Matt Cameron. He put in nearly three decades of work, played on incredible albums, and was part of legendary shows. Not much more one can ask for. Big respect and nothing but thanks for all he's done.

I get the fun of speculation but my guess is the new drummer is someone we've not even heard of before. There are a million great drummers outside the band's immediate circle of peers. Plus, what the band wants now versus what they wanted in 1991 or 1996 or whatever is probably dramatically different. I'm sure whoever they get will be a great fit. And I hope Matt is happy and fulfilled with whatever he chooses to do moving forward.

Sort of explain lots of things. The “I’ll next be behind the mic in 1-2 years” EV comment, no Euro/UK/Canada dates, next tour likely being EV etc.
As per other comments I just hope Matt has left the band to either pursue other interests or to enjoy a long and healthy retirement. Just hope he is not sick.
And that the band can find a way of continuing for some time with a different drummer. Dark Matter was the best record for years, re-energised the band and as EV and Jeff said, they still have around a couple of albums they want to do.

Really sad about this. He's been the only PJ drummer I've seen live, so he's the man.

Initial over reaction take... I hope they give Richard S. a shot, would love Chad Smith as well, but he's a busy guy.  Zac Starkey will be unemployed in a couple months as well but don't really see him as a fit unless they need a touring drummer for the short term.

So many thoughts going through my head.. band seemed to be in such a groove after DM and this last tour, seemed like they were going to carry that energy into another album sooner than later, have to wonder about that now as well.

What a bummer of a Monday morning.  In my old age I've learned to be grateful, and I'm VERY grateful for all the great MFC shows I saw and consider myself lucky to have been at his last show.  Playing Hunger Strike on the anniversary of Chris's passing at MFC's last show hits even harder now.

I mean, things have already been “winding down” since COVID.  This news is just the biggest gut punch yet.

I would agree that I would rather see this band slowly fade away over the next 5 years or so with an epic farewell tour as opposed to band members getting tired of it, slowly leaving and it becoming half of what it was

we all know Eddie is going to tour solo until his 90s so we will always have that

Agreed!  If it's not a former member that's already part of PJ's history, I don't want it.  I think plugging in new members is lame.  Especially at this stage of the game.

Damn.  I mean, I think drumming in a hard rock band is hard on drummers, so I imagine getting further into your 60s it gets harder.

Matt was awesome. I've seen 31 shows, and only 2 of then had different drummers. Lolla '92 and Oakland '22.   It'll be weird if they get someone new behind the kit.

Hopefully the band figures it out and carries on.   Hopefully Matt has an amazing retirement.
