Attend all board meetings, coach sports, fundraising events etc. Hosting reading sessions, milestone parties etc. when the kids were young. I invest more time and money than I have. But I have also moved to a place where I am totally impressed with the school leaders and teachers. It's not perfect, it lacks diversity. At the end of the day, you need to put your kids in the best possible environment, invest time and money, and hope it works out. It takes a village. And they happen to live down the street from me.Halifax2TheMax said:
And how much time do you invest in your kids’ school? PTA involvement? School board meetings? Talking to the principal to get placement with the “good” teachers? How much do you invest in your schools?Get_Right said:All of the chatter about paid performances is a reminder of why I said the dems blew it. With respect to education, there is a reason parents send their kids to private schools, and there is a reason why real estate is more expensive in districts with the "best" public schools. I believe in the core curriculum, with adjustments as needed for certain kids. But I think the NY state regents exams are silly. A 3.8 student sometimes cannot pass a state administered standardized exam. That makes no sense. I think it comes down to how the town you live in invests in their schools. I know I moved away from New York City to a suburb I can barely afford to put my two kids in the best position to be supported and academically successful.0 -

THIS RIGHT HERE! Federal oversite of special education ensures that all special needs students in every State are given access to a quality education. Once States are no longer accountable to that guidance, you will see many, most likely the ones run by charter school loving anti public school legislators, cut way back on support and funding for special education.Go Beavers said:

It's the same here...but the US Gov't oversees everything. trump wants to cut them out completely. I'm not clear what the theory is for people that support that. To me it just seems like it will weaken education.DarthMaeglin said:
In Canada education is a provincial (state) responsibility but I’m seeing a good argument for some sort of federal oversight or direction. An article I read pretty much contends that only 2 provinces and territories require a Canadian history credit to graduate high school (out of 13). Some semantics do get played with alternative history credit options but I would prefer a required course dedicated to a nation’s history with other electives available. The article found a troubling ignorance about this nation’s history in general.Gern Blansten said:
trump is a moron...I don't like this idea at all. The US Gov't has to be able to set standards that the states must meet. A state can't hold itself accountable.Philly NJ said:Trump posted plans to move Education from DC to the States. Great move. The US Department of Education has done more harm than good since its inception. And, please, get rid of Common Core.

How is an environment lacking diversity the “best possible environment?” Are your kids going to be adults and work in a “white only” world? Who lives down the street from you? The teachers/administrators?Get_Right said:

Resources. Teachers. Counselors. A robust curriculum. Clubs. After school support. Learning centers. AP classes for juniors if they can handle it. Constant communications with both parents. Healthy lunches. A proactive educational community. A Psychologist and even and MD on staff that gives a shit. More opportunities than we can even manage. Yes it is a privilege, but one we sacrifice for. Out of my pocket. But they do not live only in that world, in fact we kind of resist it. Not a the best culture, but the teachers are amazing and they foster growth. My kids are biracial and speak two languages. Who lives down the street from me? A former President and his wife who was a former Presidential candidate. Can you figure that out?Halifax2TheMax said:

https://www.cnn.com/2024/11/11/politics/melania-trump-jill-biden/index.htmlWashingtonCNN —Melania Trump is not expected to attend the traditional White House meeting with first lady Jill Biden, sources familiar with her plans said.
It’s a decision that underscores Melania Trump’s long-held willingness to buck tradition as she prepares to retake the high-profile – but unelected – role of first lady, one with no manual and an automatic global platform.
The sources cited a prior scheduling conflict for the former first lady related to her newly released memoir. One source said the decision had not been finalized.

You can actually tie Stephen Miller to white nationalist thought which makes him one of the most pernicious members of Trump's inner circle. This is a lesson in crying wolf. When you're running around calling everyone to the right of AOC a racist or Nazi, it obscures the actual wolves.

I mean, theres Trumpism in a nutshell. Nothing to do with governance, just making sure the people you don't like are owned and they know it.
Its a beaten dog mentality. Now they only know how to bite.

It is not just the problem with Trump voters. It is a problem with all voters in the middle. And, both sides care more about winning than helping the country. That is what US politics has come to, at every level. Win the middle win the election. Even for town council.
