Idlewild are an OK band, saw them open for the Pixies in Edinburgh a couple of years ago, and they were reasonable. Got blown away by the headliner, as you'd expect. Personally, I prefer a band to be opening that will put on an amazing show and give the headliners something to follow.

Since Smashing Pumpkins are playing Rock am Ring and Rock im Park in the beginning of june, I don't see why they cannot open for PJ in Europe!?

That would be sensational - with Black Crowes as a very close 2nd choice:-)

The Raconteurs (just cos i think they're fucking amazing)

I hear you ... they'll be around for the festivals anyway! I hope to see them at Werchter in any case. I've also heard people mention Smashing Pumpkins and dEUS ... I could most certainly live with those too :)

Good call on Idlewild; great live band too. I caught a small show in Brighton around the time of the last album, and they were great live.

Who remembers Monkeywrench(?) at Wembley in 2000? I don't think they had a great sound (well, not from where I was up on Mike's side).

Actually to be fair, after he played a few songs i got into him. His band were good and some of his songs had a good feel to them. He's definitely much better live than when I've heard him on the radio.

I also thought He took his beating quite well too... hehehehe

yeah, he was ok as far as I can remember. I wasn't really paying attention so like I said, I've no memory whatsoever aboot the songs.. :o

he did. he deffinately knew what he was in for. :o poor thing. handled it well. :)

I think Wilco would be a great choice for opener. I don't know how big they are in Europe but I am sure they could use the exposure. They have a new album coming out in May. That would be a hell of a show!

Weird that MMJ doesn't translate to across the pond. They are one of the few opening bands I looked forward to seeing.

Smashing Pumpkins would be cool, but I doubt it. They might be play Roskilde though.....
dEUS would be perfect. Haven't seen them live since the time around Worst case scenario.

Arcade Fire would be fun, even just to see Pitchfork's reaction. They really loathe the fact that Sonic Youth, The Ramones, My Morning Jacket etc. have opened for Pearl Jam (I believe when MMJ were announced as openers they said "Continuing Pearl Jam's trend of having far superious opening bands...").
    Hey hey it's okay...

for now i'm going to nijmegen and werchter: i'm hoping for some wise dissicions like no linking park or block party but fine bands like smashing pumpkins, gomez, admiral freebee, triggerfinger, ryan adams, sir neil young may always support them (but that is just me dreaming)

I really hope it isn't Queens of the Stone Age.....they are hideously over-rated.

They're also one of the worst live bands I've ever seen....and thats up against some pretty stiff competition!

Sonic Youth are in Europe this summer, earliest dates showing on their website are 22 June, would be good if they opened at Wembley. Of course, an acoustic set from PJ would be better as an opener. Am seeing SY at the Roundhouse in Camden in August which will be very cool. All of Daydream Nation.

    Interpol

hmmm - really like them, but opening for PJ seems a strange combination.

but - MMJ have been a weird choice too, and imho a choice that worked.

    let's wait and see

What about Take That or some winner/runner up from some none-descript 'talent' show? Then we can throw things at them!
    :D Rock on!!!! :D
Seen Pearl Jam 4 times in London, once in Manchester, as well as an Eddie show at Hammersmith.
