Definitely two places I still want to go to. And really, really wanted to get to Ukraine to dig up some roots soon. But unfortunately not looking to be in the cards for a while.

I hope you get the chance to go some day.  Hoping for a free and rebuilt Ukraine some day!

I got to go to the Soviet Union on a high school trip in 1987. Trippy indeed. If someone has to choose between St. Petersburg and Moscow, definitely go to St. Petersburg.

Been to St Pete.  The Winter Palace was a wonder to behold.  1992.
Have not been to Ukraine.  Would love to.  I did spend time in Estonia as they celebrated being free of the USSR.
Awful to think that Putin is trying to re-establish this.

About two million people have stayed in Kyiv, a population galvanized by a newfound unity and its refusal to be cowed by Russian invaders.

KYIV, Ukraine — The historic center of Kyiv, usually bustling with tourists and souvenir stalls around its pastel-colored buildings and golden domed churches, is largely deserted these days. Shops and offices are closed, and the city, placed under curfew from 8 p.m., falls dark and silent at night.

Nearly half the population left the city through the first weeks of war in a chaotic exodus that blocked the roads and swamped the central train station. But just as many people remained — an estimated two million. Some stayed because they did not have the means to leave, or a place to go to, but others did so from a sense of patriotism or a newfound defiance in the face of the Russian invasion.

People were still out walking their dogs in a park by St. Andrew’s Church, above the Dnieper River on Sunday morning, even as the sound of heavy bombardment rolled like thunder from the northern suburbs of the city.

“I don’t want to leave,” said Galina Sizikova, 48, an architect who was walking her husky near the central St. Sophia’s Cathedral. “I have a lot of opportunities to do something to help.” Her daughters were grown up and had gone to stay with relatives in Vienna and she had stayed behind with her dog, Avrora.

    continues...

Seems fitting. Gifted article. Hope it works.

Opinion: The man known as ‘Putin’s brain’ envisions the splitting of Europe — and the fall of China

On the eve of his murderous invasion, Russian President Vladimir Putin delivered a long and rambling discourse denying the existence of Ukraine and Ukrainians, a speech many Western analysts found strange and untethered. Strange, yes. Untethered, no. The analysis came directly from the works of a fascist prophet of maximal Russian empire named Aleksandr Dugin.

Dugin’s intellectual influence over the Russian leader is well known to close students of the post-Soviet period, among whom Dugin, 60, is sometimes referred to as “Putin’s brain.” His work is also familiar to Europe’s “new right,” of which Dugin has been a leading figure for nearly three decades, and to America’s “alt-right.” Indeed, the Russian-born former wife of the white nationalist leader Richard Spencer, Nina Kouprianova, has translated some of Dugin’s work into English.

But as the world watches with horror and disgust the indiscriminate bombing of Ukraine, a broader understanding is needed of Dugin’s deadly ideas. Russia has been running his playbook for the past 20 years, and it has brought us here, to the brink of another world war.

Putin is vermin.  No better than a sewer rat.  It makes me ill thinking a US President kissed his ass and would side with him over our own intelligence agencies.

    Not just the TFG.
There are plenty of people currently elected to public office that are siding with poo tin.
Plenty of people not in office but working in govt, media, intelligence, etc who side with poo tin.

    These are not "good" americans
