Let me just start by saying that the energy last night was great, and such a beautiful venue even if the weather wasn't great for Dana Point's standards like Saturday's sun and blue skies.  The boys are back and they are fantastic!!! So great and still reeling in the sheer enjoyment of having live Pearl Jam music again.  It had been 7 long years for me since Milwaukee, and they did not disappoint.  I was stoked for the entire set list, loved the new Gigaton songs that sounded awesome, and got a bunch of my live favs with Cordury, I got ID, DTE, Crazy Mary (which had a full stoppage for a possible emergency situation in the crowd) and more. Let me sleep was a special treat.  You could tell they wanted to plan another hour, and they were going to do something after Alive as Chad and Adam geared up with guitars...dam you curfew!

Until next weekend when the weather is expected to be in the low 80's, and if we get 2.5+ hours Friday and Saturday, life can't get much better!  Thanks again to the boys and to all of the Ohana staff that did an amazing job yet again.

    Cheers All.

My first PJ festival headlining show.  We were in the first few rows of the bleachers.  I had mixed feelings about going because I knew we'd be very far back from the stage (usually much closer!...don't cry for me!) but it was great to see the entire crowd get so into it!

The new songs were great!  The hits were the hits.   Looking forward to going back to arena's when they reschedule the tour.

My 14th PJ show and my 1st time seeing them since 2013 (but saw TOTD in LA in 2016 and Ed at Ohana in 2017).  My 2nd time at Ohana and the Fall feeling weather was perfect for me (cloudy, nice cool breeze, but not too hot and not too cold).  I am glad I brought a refillable water bottle this time...and also a little bleacher pad which was good to sit on while waiting and stand on while standing.  Got in around 1:00 PM and was able to get pretty close.  But this Friday, I'll be hanging back so I can move around more.  And Saturday I'll try the bleachers.  :)

As far as the openers, the standouts for me were Shovels & Rope, Sharon Van Etten, and Brandi Carlisle.  Sharon is definitely one I'll have to do a deep dive on as I dug her music and vibe.  Brandi was great, with the highlight of course being Searching With My Good Eye Closed with Matt and Mike.  Yola was also very talented.  My only complaint about the event was the shuttle seemed pretty far and while it's north location was better for LA people, it was not good for SD people (not sure when they switched it but I preferred the 2017 south location...perhaps they can flip flop it every other year or have two shuttle locations, north and south?).

As far as PJ, while Retrograde is one of my two least favorites off Gigaton (with Take The Long Way), it was a great opener, especially since it was their live debut.  All four new songs to start the show sounded AMAZING, with Quick Escape being one of my highlights of the night.  Corduroy got the masses who haven't experienced Gigaton jumping as expected.  Then the 5th new song, and much appreciated live debut, Alright was awesome.  The WMA tag was another highlight as it seemed long enough to count it as a stand alone version, and post George Floyd, etc. it was even more powerful.  Then one of my 'white whales' Red Mosquito with Danny Clinch on the harmonica, WOW!!!  The final new song SBWM was great as expected (my 2nd fave after QE).  I Got Shit was a nice surprise, and the Immortality ending was off the charts good.  Brandi rocked Better Man with Ed.  Then Ed dedicated the Christmas tune Let Me Sleep (a first for me and many as it was the 7th time ever played) to the homeless in Venice.  I am not sure if the crowd would have cheered harder and longer after Alive if they would have came out for a 2nd encore, though unless it was quick they'd break curfew, so it didn't happen.  Though it was my first time seeing Alive as the closer and of course it worked very well.

Looking forward to Friday (with Beck!) and Saturday.  I'd really love to see the other 6 Gigaton songs not played yet in Ohana, especially Who Ever Said.  And as far as old music I've never seen...PLEASE OH PLEASE...DEEP, SATAN'S BED, AROUND THE BEND, and RIVAL!!!!

Yeah, this was frustrating, as 1) AV is another 15-20 minutes north, and 2) our shuttle drivers got lost/ took the scenic route back on Saturday and Sunday. Laguna Niguel is lovely, but it should not have taken 30 minutes to get from Doheny up to AV (we took surface streets). And last night the driver was hopelessly lost, no GPS, no directions, and had to be guided by someone who pulled up the address on their phone.

Anyway: lots of great performances yesterday, Brandi and her band were awesome, Celisse is a powerhouse. PJ sounded great (the sound was much better than on Saturday). Mike certainly looked like he was thrilled to be back on stage; he played like a man possessed. Finally got to hear a good portion of Gigaton live (yay!), setlist seemed like a good mix of Gigaton, big hits/ crowd-pleasers, and deeper cuts. Looking forward to next weekend -- need to rest up to be ready. =)

This was my 18th Pearl Jam show, and it was one of my favorites. The entire band was really tight and looked beyond happy to be playing again. I love Gigaton but didn't expect 4 opening straight tracks from that album to go down as well as they did. DotC is fucking incredible live and should be a staple for many years to come! It was a little weird getting Betterman again after the version Eddie did with the Earthlings on Saturday, but it sounded good and adding Brandi was nice.

Even though WMA was technically a tag, almost the entire song was performed, so I'm going to check that off as my first time ever hearing it. It was definitely one of the highlights for me. Let Me Sleep was fun (second time I've seen it live). Favorite performance of the night, though, was Given to Fly -- it's such an incredibly uplifting song and perfect for the spirit of the festival, the atmosphere, and the trauma of the past couple years.

I'll be heading back to Ohana on Friday for what I'm sure will be another incredible night.

Immortality thru DTE was my highlight of the show as was hearing the new gigaton songs. Might have helped we found a better spot during this portion and the crowd around me was much better, singing and dancing the whole time (Boise, ID fan we met was a great concert neighbour).

Also loved that DTE did not have part of it skipped in place of crowd chant. PJ had been skipping the "admire me...." portion of the song in the past in place of crowd chants. This  ruined the best part of one of my fav PJ songs the last couple times I heard it live. They played the song complete last night!

^ Feeling the same. Set list hit the Gigaton songs I hoped for (Retrograde/Alright in particular). Quick Escape roared far beyond expectations.

I thought Quick Escape had some real Led Zeppelin vibes.  Awesome surprise.

Dear Mr. Vedder and Ohana crew. I want to apologize for only paying face value for what was an absolutely perfect day and capped off by some of the most beautiful performances in a perfect location. If you want what I think I owe, please DM me and we will set up a payment plan. My mind is still blown.

Brandi, Yola and many of the other bands were amazing. Yola and her version of Goodbye Yellow  Brick Road made me cry it was so beautiful. Brandi and her band blew all of our minds.

Gigaton is a monster album and live the songs encompass your body and hold you through the ride. Quick Escape is heavy live. Retrograde opener was amazing. Amazing setlist. The hits were played but had an energy that was unique. And almost a full version of WMA!!!!!!!! What. Yes. Fuck yea!!!!!!

The crowd was amazing. Singing loud and dancing all night. No douchebags. But watching Brandi’s joy to be on stage and kill it on Betterman was worth all I paid and more. That joy was contagious and unlike COVID I loved it!!! What a fucking festival!!!!! What a day. I’m still flying high and it’s Tuesday.

I only wish I could make both days this weekend. Have fun everyone.

I feel the same way. We went early each day and caught as much live music as humanly possible. Amazing weekend!

I thought most of the support bands were excellent. Definitely worth getting there early, putting down a blanket and chilling.  I have seen a ton of good PJ shows, but I think that I had more FUN and experienced more JOY at Ohana (aka Vedderfest) than any other event in a LONG time. Have fun all!
  • Haven’t posted here in years but last weekend and excitement for those there tonight inspired me.  It was worth traveling from he East Coast, even with massive challenges coordinating time off from work/ school, just to hear those Gigaton songs alone,  which sounded SSOOOO good!

Also all sympathies to KOL and their families, and I hope they felt the energy and positivity and generosity and excitement when Ed performed Fri night, including Molly’s Chambers, was an incredible affirmation of love and life.  Just incredible.

In addition in closing Eddie said MMJ gave something like “the best f—ing performance I’ve ever…” and THEY DID.  That band is a revelation, they make you feel like you have dissolved into the cosmos, it’s CRAZY! Extraordinary night, I was kind of spent for the rest of the weekend in a very nice way.
