What is your solution then?  Honestly curious.

You can’t force something on people that isn’t FDA approved at least at a national level.  Private entities can mandate vaccines (airlines/colleges/etc) and make it hard enough that people who don’t want the Vaxx say “fuck it”

But what else can we do when every person(in the states) who wants the vaccine can readily and easily get it and protect themselves?

100% of the country was never going to get the vaccine.  We are never going to prevent anyone ever dying again of coronavirus or a variant.  Anyone who expects that doesn’t live in reality

Sorry for the rant, but the 10% crowd of people who (I think) genuinely never want the pandemic to end are just as frustrating as the 10% of fools who think the vaccine and the pandemic are a fake government ploy to do whatever the hell they think is going on
My answer is to always protect myself! C19 is here to stay it will never be stomped out, I won’t put myself in dangerous situations I’m ok never attending a concert again I’m 60 I can just live the rest of my life in a boring existence no problem!

    so question for you both.

did you ever come down with a flu over the years?

I had a flu shot while in boot camp 1988. had a couple rough days. didnt have another til last year.

    reason was 2 fold.

got knocked down HARD in Jan of 20 then had lingering chest/lung pain for 3 weeks. the coughing....

since many symptoms overlapped, I decided it smart to get the flu vax (some senior version. wtf I'm that old now?)

am now fully vaxxed approx 3 weeks since 2nd shot.
The last year I was in the Navy, I tried to avoid getting my Flu shot. I don't remember why, I just remember telling my CPO that I wasn't getting the shot. After a couple of minutes of his blistering cussing, I headed over to base medical to get my Flu shot. I didn't get one for years afterwards, but a few years ago my doctor suggested I get one due to my "advancing age". Now I get one every year, and my employer has a program with our insurance company that we get a $50 gift card for getting the Flu shot. More money for vinyl!

And yes, I know we don’t have an approved vaccine for those under 16.  Im sure there is an argument somewhere in there saying that we need to wait for that day to come.

All I’m saying is this.  In my opinion, to the vast majority of the country, the vaccine was an endpoint.  Friends and family members of mine who were incredibly cautious are now gathering, hugging, celebrating.  Many of my colleagues have stated patients have gotten lazy with masks wearing and many patients have started reaching out to shake our hands (and every doctor I’ve talked to has said they’ve started shaking them back)

So yes, I think to the majority of the country, the vaccine was an end point.  Not saying it’s right or wrong, but it’s the way it is.  The level of concern is dropping as fast as the number of deaths is, the country is reopening, the vaccine works incredibly well, and I think by the end of summer we will be back to 100% normalcy.
If it's wrong, then how the hell are we going to be back to 100% normalcy by summer's end?

This is an honest question, less than a third of the country is vaccinated at the moment and people are letting their guard down prematurely... I want to be positive and optimistic as much as you, but if variants out smart the vaccine, normalcy is a fantasy.

I get being frustrated w/ people who as you put it, 'genuinely don't want the pandemic to end" but I don't think this group exists to the extent that certain media act like they are. And they certainly don't exist to the extent of the anti-maskers / conspiracy people do, so to get as frustrated with the former as you do the latter... this is a viewpoint I genuinely can't understand.

I can see why my viewpoint may be frustrating, and you don’t have to agree with it.

The anti vaxxers frustrate the hell out of me because not one person has really had a proper explanation for not getting it except for an occasional allergy restriction

The people, who yes is a much smaller crowd, who don’t think we should ever go back to normal until covid is eradicated and every human on the planet is vaccinated also frustrate me because that was a solution that hasn’t been ever possible since March of 2020

People are free to and should always protect themselves.  But by the end of summer, the federal govt and state governments will likely allow folks to live restriction free (except masks, This is the one thing that may remain in place for a long time in some settings) and I just feel that 80-90% of people will choose to get back to normal.

And for the variants, I don’t think those are particularly dangerous in the large scale (personal opinion), and there’s going to be a yearly covid booster shot which should help with limiting the level of symptoms should someone catch a variant case

The rumor im hearing from some connected folks is that the CDC could announced loosened recommendations as soon as today 4/27 and Massachusetts will follow by the end of the week

I have 3 kids 6 and under and I am very hesitant getting them the vaccine when it is available. They have been vaccinated as they should be up to this point with everything else and I have already had my first shot but this one just feels different being so new. We will more than likely go ahead with it when it becomes available to their age group but I am not going to lie I have way more anxiety with the vaccine than them getting Covid.

I side with Weston on this on for sure regarding opening up so it is not just a parent thing. The what ifs need to stop at some point. Also if someone else does not want to get vaccinated that is on them just like the flue shot is on them. This time though, at least for now, the vaccine for Covid is far superior to the flu shot.

The only way we are getting to herd immunity is by roughly half of the population getting vaccinated and the rest of the way will come by infection. We will never truly know if we have herd immunity however and with the numbers being as high as Fauci put them ( he actually raised the numbers when he found out the efficacy of the vaccine was better than expected which makes no sense) I think so many people are not looking at the big picture here of at some point soon this is as good as it gets.

What about vaccinations for the kids?
Long Covid is a proven thing, right?  Just because kids aren't dying from it in any sizeable percentage, can't they still get it and carry issues forward?  What do we do about vaccinations for the kids?  As far as I know, in the US there are 0% vaccinated under the age of 16....is that something we should be concerned about before clamoring to go and see a band play concerts or a football team tackle people?
(Edit - looks like trials are underway for kids under 16 in the US....)

I don't find your viewpoint frustrating; I simply don't understand it.

I think you're way over exaggerating the bold faced section... hasn't the target always been 70% vaccination for herd immunity? I don't know anyone who loves this pandemic and wants the restrictions to continue indefinitely. I haven't heard anyone push for complete eradication / 100% vaccination before reopening. I'm not saying these people don't exist, I'm saying they don't exist in the numbers you think they do.

I am not saying it does not happen -- if you read what I wrote it was in reference to a sizeable percentage.  Any individual cases are heartbreaking.

Was curious on his stance, I do not assume all parents think like I do....in fact I would venture to guess that it is a very small percentage of people overall (parents or not) who consider the health of people under 16 when making these statements about "every person who wants it can have it"....sort of baffling that kids are looked past.  They can get it and spread it and possibly suffer long term effects.

In my opinion, the what ifs do not need to stop -- this is the sort of statement I find difficult to think through.  What ifs are incredibly important with new situations like this.

I should of clarified better by what I meant by the what ifs need to stop. I did not mean that we should ignore them or pretend they do not exist I just feel like with regards to restrictions at some point they need to be less of a factor. I feel like that time should be coming sooner rather than later with the way the vaccine rolls out.

Nashville is removing all restrictions on May 14th besides mask wearing.  But sporting events and concerts can resume at 100% capacity.

Seems like a hot morning for restriction loosening coming on the heels of the CDC update later today

    Per CDC as of now
    • Fully vaccinated people do not need to wear masks in small outdoor gatherings, even if some people at the gathering are not vaccinated.  They double down that if you are vaccinated, your risk is minimal to none when outdoors, even around unvaccinated people
    • Still wear masks at larger packed outdoor gatherings
    • Vaccinated people can resume regular every day activities indoors safely with a mask such as going to the gym or a restaurant or bar
    • Less than 10% of transmission is found in the outdoor setting

    Fauci discussing variants
    - The UK Vaccine is now the dominant variant covid-19 strain in the USA, but it is covered by all of the mRNA vaccine
    - South African variant - all of the vaccines except the AstraZeneca are effective against this variant

    Final statement from Fauci:
”Get vaccinated and you will have a degree of protection even from the variants”

I understand.  I also hope that we can get more data regarding the vaccine in children.  But like you said, it is not as lethal to children.  Possible?  Yes, but not nearly to the degree of the at risk crowd.  I can’t relate as closely since I don’t have children.

We actually need to beat the virus before we beat the virus. That’s the simple fact conservatives are overlooking. If we take a close look at vaccinations by state, many democratic states have at least one dose in 47% of the population while red states are at 37%. That gap is only going to widen. To beat the virus, we need to get new cases very low, so the virus does not continue to mutate and strengthen. If statewide populations only vaccinate around 55% of the population, the virus will mutate, become stronger and deadlier.

A healthier country would be having THAT discussion, before whining about lost freedoms. And it can’t be said enough, there are counties that do. Australia unvaccinated is healthier than the US vaccinated. We should all chew on that for a moment.

And some were trumping up Texas success here last week. Where are they now?

The virus will continue mutate no matter how many people get vaccinated.  It sounds like we have a different opinion on what beating the virus is.

As for Texas, I think they’re doing well?

The virus will continue mutate no matter how many people get vaccinated.  It sounds like we have a different opinion on what beating the virus is.

Right, seem to be doing fine to me opposed to Michigan who is now blaming the youth for the outbreak requiring masks for children 2 and up.  I have never seen a group pull for bad results more than the group that pulls against these states who open up, aka red states.  Think about that, we ALL (should) want to go back to normal but there is a group that wants these states to fail.

What if Australia already had an outbreak prior to 2020?  I am telling y'all, spend some time today reading through some links I post.  The Ethical Skeptic posts some very intriguing stuff.

New York and Minnesota likely lifting many restrictions within days.  It doesn’t matter red or blue at this point, they’re all easing up.  We are at the end.

Fauci touched on this yesterday and stated that Covaxin “neutralizes” this variant.  So troubling in a way, but we already have a solution.

The United States is but one small part of the greater whole. We ARE NOT the center of the planet.
