If they learned about it in school, they've forgotten it or never actually learned it in the first place. And with it being slowly realized that Trump has exposed holes and/or that there are many grey areas in the constitution, and with Trump's legal team and right wing media saying Pence does have (some kind of) power to swing it; it becomes believable. I don't remember exactly what I learned but I am sure every four years we learned about the electoral college, which is to say that the votes of the people are tabulated per the electoral college. I don't quite recall when or how I learned about the electors and that part of the process but I would not be surprised if I was an adult. I probably learned about the date and the concept of "faithless electors" after the election of 2000, which was so close.As for what's going to happen on the 6th? I found out this year. Why? Because a petulant whiny baby's ego has led an entire party down a very dark path and suddenly this stuff is not mere formality.In 2000, there was actual reason to believe that Bush stole the election. And who'd he beat? Sitting Vice President Al Gore. If what these people believe (that Pence can just turn this around because he wants to), it's hard to believe that it never even came up when this step of the process came around with Gore. No offense, but it doesn't matter what 95% of the population knows our what the Canadians know. It's still nowhere in the constitution. That's not a shot at you, I'm just saying it's an absurd argument. There's no legs to it. A VP doesn't just get to select the electors. They are certified and presented to him. That certification already happened. Otherwise random people could just get together from a state and create alternate electors, allowing the VP to choose the president. That's essentially what is being tried. These few states had essentially residents get together to create fake electors.
