How about LEARN something? There are so many dumb people around....breeding dumber people....who just sit there and watch crap tv and read crap magazines and play crap games ALL THE TIME and never pick up a pencil or read something worthwhile or watch a documentary or TALK about anything interesting even.

I think the world needs to educate themselves....but I think the increase in computer game playing and other crap media is making it harder and harder for kids and some adults (*not you guys*) to do anything and learn anything because they're so addicted to playing or watching.

It amazes me how much time my friends spend on them....then complain that they're not happy with their lives because they're 30 and still living at home. WELL GO DO SOMETHING!!! Get off the fucking couch and put the controller down for a while!

What could these friends have done if they'd put all that effort into something more productive....THAT is my question?

Give it 50 years and the world is going to be full of deadshits.

"I think the world needs to educate themselves...."
Ziggystar.. think yourself lucky you have access, as a woman, to education.

anyways if people weren't into technology.. why would e-books exist? are you shooting urself in the foot?!....

But I didn't say everyone is dumb. I said there are "so many" dumb people. Kids today can't even write or speak their own language properly?!?!? Or add or multiply. In my world, that's very very bad.

And I understand that people play them for time out etc....you're taking what I'm saying totally wrong.

Regarding No 2 -- Views like THAT is what's wrong with the world today.
So attack the Government and the education system for not schooling these people properly :) Did you go to a private school? why do these even exist? and why are funds not spread evenly throughout schools for everyone to access?? Now there's a real question :) Blame the dumbing down of exams in schools... society is getting dumber on it's own, not only due to video games....

    Hi everyone :)

Now this computer game debate is something I've really looked into over the years, being a Mum and all ;)
This pretty much summerises most of the info I've read and been told:
The question is simple when it comes to a delivery device like a mobile phone. Mobiles make it easier to talk, but don't improve what we say, which is fine, because they are convenience tools. But now we are being told that the latest media technology, like video games and reality TV, are not just entertaining, but a way to boost the brain.

Interestingly, the charge is being led by a new book that argues trash TV and the likes of Space Invaders lifts IQ. In Everything Bad is Good for You, American writer Steven Johnson insists that what is making us smarter is what we thought was making us stupid: popular culture. The culture he is talking about is electronic, and ranges from Grand Theft Auto through Finding Nemo to TV, both reality (Survivor) and drama (24). It is revenge of the literate cyber-nerds. Video games, TV and digitally animated movies are a way to embrace, not escape, reality, Johnson says. They are different to reading, but they do expand the mind and make you clever.

The notion that Joe Millionaire is up there with Jane Austen is a long way from Flaubert and a sizeable leap from the standard defence of TV put by Clive James. "Anyone afraid of what he thinks television does to the world is probably just afraid of the world," James says. Johnson, a contributing editor of cyber-savvy Wired magazine, goes much further.

Rather than a race to the bottom, popular culture, as expressed in new media, is an enlightening experience, he says, arguing that the media games we play are becoming more complex and intellectually challenging. So how is it that video games such as Ultima are brain food?

Johnson says brains are set up to respond to the kind of problem-solving hurdles posed by games and work for children because they tap into the brain's natural "reward circuitry". This happens through what he calls the "dopamine system", the mechanism that distributes feel-good chemicals. Thus, spending hours driving through virtual streets playing Grand Theft Auto is not aimless, but a structured narrative in which desire is engaged to solve problems. The brain, he suggests, demonstrates its approval of such cognitive effort by delivering dollops of its pleasure drug.

    Bye everyone :)

but what is you reason for definitely sending your kids to private school????? Is it because all the government schools there are no good?
It all comes down to whats the best available. For us it just so happens that the Govt; schools are the better schools.....but I know that's not the case everywhere.

I'm purely basing my thoughts on Townsville schools. I went to the second biggest public high school in Townsville. It's apparently really crap and rough now, as are some of the other big public schools. It was a bit rough when I was there but I hung around people who were quite smart and not rough or like that at all....I was in all the top group of classes (based on results) so didn't really see much of the rough stuff.

I would send my child to Townsville Grammar or Cathedral (Anglican school) - both private. There was a "How Did Your School Compare?" thing in the paper the other week about which schools had the greatest number of students with the different OP scores etc, which had better marks in different subject groups etc. Those two private schools did better than all the public schools.

Yeah we get a report each year on the schools and where they rate.
I suggest (just suggest :) )you wait until you actually have school age kids. These school ratings can change all the time as it all depends on what teachers they get there. It amazes me at how it changes here every few years. Some schools that are up the top for years can plummit to the bottom very quickly, if they get the wrong teachers in.

That I believe in self-education? In bettering oneself? That's narrow minded?

And yes, I'm just putting my opinion across....and I agree that it's not right for everyone...

It's obvious after today that I've grown up differently and have a *very* different view on life than most of you here....I suppose we should all leave it at that and drop the subject.

Of course I'd keep looking at the results etc....but I know for a fact that since I've been at school which is 1993, those two schools have out-performed my old school each time -- which was one of the better public schools in Townsville. The newspaper prints an article each year about each school etc.

But if those results changed, of course I'd change my mind and look at the other options. :)

    cool....yeah that's what we do :)

We'd always planned to send the kids to the highschool in the next town, which was in the top 3 highschools in the state for yeeeears......but it's really gone down in the last 2-3 years. Hence - we're moving :)

WHEN did I say that ANY of you do NOTHING but play games?

I actually asked have you ever THOUGHT of spending that time doing something else? Mainly because I wondered the other day (as I explained earlier) what my whinging, 30 year old, live at home with mum and dad friend would (or could) have done if he hadn't used so much of his time on activities that after 10 year haven't really got him anywhere....with xbox games being a major activity during this period.

In NO WAY did I say that any of you "haven't got anywhere because of playing games" and nor do I think think that "people who enjoy games don't also do the things I suggested either". Why are you all jumping down my throat? I asked you guys because you're the only other people I know who play games lots!

I simply asked "Have you ever thought about putting all that time you spend playing games into something else?" If you knitted, I'd probably ask whether you had ever thought about doing something else besides knitting for 10 years!

Fucking hell. This is ridiculous! Have you ever "thought" about it....I didn't say that you all should stop playing games. FUCK!!

As I get older, I realise the importance of time and how I don't want to waste copious amounts of it watching tv, sleeping, stuffing around etc....that's what got me wondering about this.

I understand relaxing etc...but imagine what you'd achieve with that time if you were doing something different and more productive?

And I'm quoting this so people can refresh what I said earlier.
