It's actually surprising how many people that have advanced degrees in something generally respected as something for "smart" people* are really one-trick ponies. For example, Ben Carson is a brain surgeon. But he's no "brain surgeon." You have to respect his ability to get through med school but I don't generally respect his as a well-rounded intelligent person. I think a random "smart" person is just as likely to be drawn in by nonsense they want to believe as a random "average" person.

*Engineering, medicine, etc. And to be fair, these are challenging and do take a certain amount of intelligence to achieve and I probably could not have. But one's breadth of intelligence can be very narrow. I had two friends in college who were electrical engineering majors, both essentially straight-A students, and both now kicking ass professionally, I think. One is without question one of the five smartest people I know and is well-rounded with knowledge and interests. He could have literally been anything you can be via higher education. The other had amazing knowledge gaps and would not have been able to do things not math-based with a rigid answer (e.g., law). Is he smart? Sure. But, not in the same way the first guy is. I think he'd be much more likely than the first guy to be suckered in by some nonsensical propaganda (I'm not in touch with him).

My wife has an old high school friend that kept sending her shit through FB messenger. Wife told her to stop because it was just insane bullshit (hunter biden shit before election, giuliani shit after). Her friend is super nice but just fucking stupid as hell. She actually tried to convince my wife to watch a youtube video she sent that described by the Biden admin was going to turn the USA into a socialist country.

I don't see a way out of this.

As the internet came about, it was obvious that there's just way more information than there ever used to be. But right behind that we came to realize that there's just way more disinformation. And that certainly isn't going away. How do you get millions of gullible people to not believe dishonesty that they really want to believe when that dishonesty is going to persist and probably grow in ways we haven't even thought of yet? Hell, it seems like yesterday that Fox News was the key creator of this. Now, they're kinda minor league by comparison.

So in short, neither do I.

i would almost put intelligence, or more specifically, the ability to get good grades in any given profession, and the ability to think critically, in two different pots.

i know a lot of people that were intensely good at school and their job, but applying that to societal or social situations.....doorknobs.

Honestly I think we need to put boundaries on the first amendment. Just like yelling fire in a theater is wrong you shouldn't be able to publish false information on youtube, FB, twitter, etc. I realize that there are some limits on this now but there needs to be much more.

The sad part is that the disinformation is mostly one sided. When people are corrected it tends to be the right wing view which causes them to blow their tops.

Reminds me of Politifact. They stay busy refuting BS that the right puts out and they feel like they have to throw a liberal correction in there to be fair. Most of the liberal corrections are so minor it's pathetic.
