My sister.
We talked a bit ago for her birthday (I always loved that she and Lennon shared that date). Our relationship has gone from tight, to distant, to super-close again. The past rifts of our childhood and teenage years were meaningless, and are no more.
I always thought of her as "the explorer" - brave, curious, unafraid of failure. She was the one who came to my defense when I was being molested, the one I truly went through our parents' divorce with (and all the fallout), the only one who understands our language, our inside jokes.
We haven't seen each other for over a year, due both to my illness (can't do an hour-long car ride, dammit) and lately, because of Covid. We speak often, but I miss her.
We're shooting for Thanksgiving. (She's a badass cook, too )

ironically, my sister is on my mind as well. for completely different reasons. i often think that when my parents are gone, i won't speak to either of my siblings again. sister is a raging narcissist, but also the darling of my parents (middle child, husband died of alcholism, etc), and i have nothing against my brother, we just lead different lives, and if i don't make the effort, nothing happens. it is what it is.

My wife, who also cannot drink because of a medical condition, used to ask for a nice mocktail back when we used to go to bars. Sometimes, the bartender, who was also a friend of ours, would just make her something, too.
my kids love shirley temples, and when we're at the lake, the kids all get virgin pina coladas made for them before the adults make theirs (same blender).
