The coronavirus

In my county (metro Richmond) we had our biggest one week spike in a long time last week. But it went from 4 to 59, so not massive. Back down this past week. The state is not doing great, but it's okay. We have big metro areas with lots of travelers, so you have to expect that we'll be along for the ride with the rest of the country, especially because it's beach season and everyone comes through or stays in VA.mcgruff10 said:

I do feel good that mask adherence is up even from a few weeks ago. Last time I commented on it, probably a month ago, I would say in the suburban/urban areas, adherence was about 75%. Now it's definitely in the 90's. Very few people are in public areas without them.0 -

This article summarizes and compares the two recent U.S. MIS-C studies from New England (https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMoa2021680) and New York (https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMoa2021756).
Highlights:
The New York group estimated that the majority of MIS-C cases occurred about one month after the peak of Covid-19 cases in the state. They estimated that between March 1 and May 10, two of every 100,000 people under the 21 years of age who had laboratory-confirmed SARS-CoV-2 virus developed MIS-C in the state. The infection rate in people under the age of 21 years was 322 in 100,000 over that period.
Manish Patel, from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Covid-19 response team, said the message to parents is they should be on the lookout for fever and rash in children who have recently had Covid-19.

Well, lets hope that NJ/NY pay attention to what is happening in Florida and other States that are going through a drastic spike now.Halifax2TheMax said:

The Florida Department of Health reported 15,299 new Covid-19 cases Sunday, the highest number of new cases reported in a single day by any state since the coronavirus pandemic began.

These fucking red State gubnors could have taken the lead by paying attention to what happened in NY and NJ, taken the necessary precautions and totally avoided the situation they’re in now. But they listened to Team Trump Treason instead. This will make a great campaign add when it’s time. Good fucking luck with “leadership” like that.0 -
Good news.
A company in India that produces medicines and vaccines is producing a vaccine for Covid right now. It has not passed the clinical trials yet but they are confident it will and are wasting no time so they started production.
It's a privately owned family company so the risk at losing millions of dollars if it doesn't get approved.
The owner said that 50% goes to India and the other 50% will go to the rest of the world.0 -

My employer just halted plans for a return to the office for many of our lines of business, in all states that we operate in. We were supposed to have the option to go back July 20, but that has been pushed back through Labor Day, at least. Smart move as working from home has not reduced productivity at all.

Kinda a "LOOK AT ME!!!" title there. No 100% effective vaccine...ok. But I'll bet ya there will be a fairly effective vaccine by January.Meltdown99 said:Full coronavirus vaccine unlikely by next year: expert

Let's hope that the "100% effective" comment was made by the journalist and not the epidemiologist, given that a "100% effective" vaccine is impossible.Meltdown99 said:Full coronavirus vaccine unlikely by next year: expert

I have my doubts that we'll get a vaccine that leads to an immune response that is robust enough and durable enough to be useful anytime soon, but I hope I'm wrong.my small self... like a book amongst the many on a shelf0 -
A vaccine is not going to rid us of this problem being that so many will refuse to get vaccinated. I don't see how a vaccine is the silver bullet in this case.

So here's a hypothetical.. Let's assume Fauci and Birx are sidelined or fired (likely at this point) and the Trump administration announces they have a vaccine and it's ready to go. Do you trust them?bbiggs said:A vaccine is not going to rid us of this problem being that so many will refuse to get vaccinated. I don't see how a vaccine is the silver bullet in this case.0 -
It gets it down to a manageable level and allows for individual protection. Like we were discussing earlier, people still contract and die from TB every year but between a vaccine and treatment options, we can all go about our lives.bbiggs said:A vaccine is not going to rid us of this problem being that so many will refuse to get vaccinated. All the standard caveats about developing a vaccine that is effective apply.0 -

But most of those that refuse to get vaccinated will be willing to go to games, concerts, work, etc. So it'll be part "herd immunity" and part vaccine. Certain jobs (medical, of course) will probably have requirements (I assume that's legal and done with measles, etc.). It would be ideal if everyone who can get vaccinated would and hopefully it will be roughly as effective as the vaccinations most of us use today.

Given the challenges with vaccine development, testing and production, I don't think there's any way that this scenario occurs i.e. an "in-house" vaccine produced by the Trump admin. Any vaccine is going to have data from development and testing. If no data is released, then no, I'm not inclined to trust it, no matter who makes the claim.my small self... like a book amongst the many on a shelf0 -
Fair enough. I think that's probably right, that it will have the international community's fingerprints and testing all over it. I was just thinking about that last night when I started to see the Fauci stuff happening. At this point, the Trump admin is useless as a centralized control entity for management of the outbreak. But they will be integral to distribution of the vaccine whether it originates here in the States or somewhere else.oftenreading said:mrussel1 said:

I'm not sure that relying on herd immunity is a viable option either at this point, being that studies continue to show that antibody levels decrease rapidly after infection. As a layman, it seems to me that this virus will continue to circulate even after a vaccine is available.
