Since going back in time isn't an option, where things stand today, Sanders may as well be considered the spiritual leader of the left-wing cohort of the Democratic party. If he stays in the race for a little longer (say, a debate longer), maybe he can convince some of his voting base to pivot to Biden who otherwise would've spoiled their ballots. Or, maybe behind closed doors, Biden and Sanders are discussing what Sanders would like him to include in his policies moving forward, in exchange for an authentic endorsement. I know these are entirely unprovable theories, but Sanders is unlikely to have more leverage in his career than he does just today in terms of influencing Biden's policies.
