Anyone else feel like the new clips from Dance of the Clairvoyants hint at Pearl Jam heading down a similar path of reinvention that Queens of the Stone Age went down for Like Clockwork and Villains? I loved how QOTSA managed to bring in retro synth sounds and a more atmospheric sound while still being 100% QOTSA. Pearl Jam may be up to something similar, and I'm loving it!

a little. I was hoping Josh was gonna produce the new album.

I don't like the compressed sound of Villains. Plus the songs to me sounded like Like Clockwork b-sides. Always thought they were at their best with bombastic drums (not always provided by Mr Grohl).

agreed.  I think Villains is okay, but not at the level of clockwork.

The synth in QOTSA works wheras the PJ song it does not.

The two are mixed wayyyyy different.
  • I've had Villains back in my rotation in recent weeks, and am really just now paying attention to how they play around with the time signature in Domesticated Animals.

There's a lot of 7s & 8s, but I haven't figured out the pattern yet. (I'm not big into music theory, I just like counting along & figuring out odd time signatures [when I can]).

Happy anniversary ...Like Clockwork. Randomly selected it from my vinyl collection without even realizing it was released this day in 2013. Love this album. So beautiful and well done. Top ten of the last 20 years in rock.
    It's a hopeless situation...

Me too.. it's an amazing album.  I love to crank the opening bass on Eyes Peeled.  It's a great, menacing start to the record.  And a super hq pressing as well.

I think its my favorite album of theirs actually.

Great songs and they translate also nice live.

Way better than their latest album, which is probably my least liked of theirs.

Queens of the Stone Age - Rated Rpng
came out 20 years ago today and got me into QoTSA. I remember hearing Feel Good Hit of the Summer on y100 (philly alternative rock station at the time)

I got the Rated X vinyl version of this. The Rated R was way to pricey for me at this time.  Wonder if there are anu major differences besides the cover.

    No it does not.

As big a fan as I am of Josh Hommes the musician / songwriter, from what I've seen and know of him, I'm not a fan of Josh Hommes the person.

Edit: I should acknowledge that we're taking the word of his ex at the moment, and who knows if any of this is true, but I do know he's had substance abuse issues in the past and I've also seen him be a prick on stage enough times to think he's just that.

Yeah I feel the same way. There's nothing musically that this guy has done that I haven't been into; Queens, Eagles of Death Metal, Crooked Vultures, Kyuss, Desert Sessions.....I love it all. But he seems like a total dickhead. Remember the time he kicked a female photographer in the face at a festival?

When I saw this thread had new posts, I was excited that it might mean new music. Quite the contrary.

That incident was typical a hole Josh Hommes... IIRC, he kicked the camera while she was trying to line up a shot, knocking the camera into her face. Dick move, the woman was doing her job... it's splitting hairs I know, but it's not exactly accurate to say he kicked her in the face.

RE: his music... he's arguably by favorite songwriter of the last 20 years... he definitely tests my limit for loving the art / hating the artist.

the evidence against him doesn't look good, but remember, there's always two sides. Brody seems like a piece of work herself.

anyone a fan of kyuss might want to check out Stoner, the new band with Nick Oliveri, Brant Bjork, and Ryan Gut. they've released one studio album, one live album, and have a second album coming out soon.
