I disagree - in fact I think it is rather creative how this groove started off as a drum machine creation and Matt literally recreated the vibe with it purely with his own drumset and mixing choices

To me real art is knowing when to pull back and lay down a groove.  Doing crazy fills and polyrhythmic stuff would not best service the song at hand.  

i agree that this drum loop fits this song.

I dislike the sound of this first track. It doesn’t sound real to me. Synth and drum machines aren’t my thing and have no true space around the instruments like a real drum in a real environment. This sounds like a plastic song to me.

With respect to lyrics, it’s pretty cryptic. I think I can glean something from them but then again I don’t really know. It’s like reading tea leaves.

Can understand your points, but just so you know.... it's not a drum machine, it's "a real drum in a real environment". 

I love the song. I had a drummer in a black metal band listen. He likes it. However he did say the drums are really a combination of little sensors on them that can really do almost anything when hooked to a computer. Even he has some and said that in concert it would be just a switch to get that sound.  So it is not technically a real environment. 
Fyi,  I have met MFC and he kicks ass!

The song is OK,  If they wanted to go this route they should have done it in the early 2000's. The song is only a PJ song because of the man singing it. You could have had the lead singer of AHA do it and it would sound like everything from the early to mid 80's. If you want to be creative make something fresh and new,  don't rehash something from 35 years ago.  At this point, stick to what you do, blister through it and tear the roof off the place.  I would have preferred if they went back to Ten and came full circle.  So lets see what the rest of the album has to offer.  So far in my book not a good start.  When I heard Mind Your Manners,  I thought they would have gone the full circle but the album was more pop/country/melodic.

I can see this song getting remixed for the clubs,  than it may have something.  In its current iteration.  Some bland 80's tune.

Lyrics are very cliche and Ham Fisted like everything on Lightning Bolt... 

Seems like you detest them more on principle than on their delivery.

They're my favorite band of all time but they've phoned in the last couple albums at the last minute, piecing together bits and pieces of demos that they all work on seperately and try to work into songs, and it comes off sounding like unfinished demos and b-sides.

@brianlux you need to give it a chance brother.  I thought I was gonna hate it after the first listen.  It has gotten better and better each listen and Im loving it now.

How long can you argue about whether you like a song or not. 😂. In my entire life no one has ever talked me into liking music I don’t like or talked me out of liking music I did like.

yeh, and one of the greatest rhythm guitar players ever playing bass, greatest bass players playing keyboards, and greatest lead guitarist playing 3 notes over and over again... I think it was written yesterday, a few hours before release... 1st Take. LOL

Cue the scene from A Charlie Brown Christmas where Charlie Brown is at Lucy's counseling booth and she keeps blathering on until he finally has had enough and yells, "That's it!" and she flies out of her chair backwards. Also, if you're giving up after 30 seconds ... it's really at about the 2-minute mark where Mike slides in with the Prince-sounding guitar that things really start to get good.

Full disclosure, this really isn't my style of music. I wasn't a huge fan of 80s new wave when it was new. Probably I would have pulled the plug 30 seconds in on any other band. I kept with it and have re-listened because it's these guys. And it's fine. It's not my favorite track they've ever done, but there are definitely things about it I like. I will enjoy hearing it performed live.
