Joe Biden Caught Off Guard at Town Hall by Question on Fund-Raiser’s Fossil Fuel Ties

Joseph R. Biden Jr. seemed momentarily caught off guard on Wednesday in a nationally televised climate change forum about whether a host of a fund-raising event for him had ties to the fossil fuel industry. Mr. Biden, who has pledged not to take money from oil and gas executives, was confronted by an audience member about a high-dollar fund-raiser on his schedule on Thursday in New York with an executive named Andrew Goldman.

Mr. Biden denied Mr. Goldman was a fossil fuel executive. The pledge he signed binds him not to take contributions of more than $200 from “S.E.C.-named executives of fossil fuel companies.’’ The former vice president told the CNN host Anderson Cooper that Mr. Goldman was not listed as an executive in fossil fuel company filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission. “That’s what we look at,’’ Mr. Biden said.

Mr. Cooper, who seemed apprised in advance of the issue raised by the audience member, pressed Mr. Biden, saying Mr. Goldman “has a company called Western LNG” that announced it was building an offshore terminal in western Canada to export natural gas. Earlier in the day, the news site The Intercept had reported on Mr. Goldman’s background.

Funny fact #1- there is no widespread reliable alternative to natural gas.

Funny fact #2- The US for the first time has seen a long term moderate reduction in carbon output. Roughly 15% decline since the 90s.

But it gets funny. This decline is the result of replacing coal power plants with natural gas plants.

Get ready to laugh. Widescale use of Natural gas is economically feasible because of fracking.

Ok it's time. Clueless Liz wants to eliminate fracking with no renewable alternative available.

Progressives are gonna screw us all. Heres the red carpet to 4 mo years Donny.

^ its bizarre that the extreme left is fighting natural gas as it is the biggest reason we have reduced greenhouse gases because it replaces high carbon and dirty coal.

As there is no scalable solution for renewable heat currently, its inexcusable the media has not asked the simple solution for eliminating gas to the candidates

As an example, consider the new arena about to be constructed at Belmont.

NYS is at maximum pipeline capacity for gas and is currently not taking on new customers.

Environmentalists have paused a new pipeline that would bring  in supply through the Ocean.

Since that pipe is delayed, the only alternative for large new developments like Belmont is propane, which is very dangerous because it needs hundreds of trucks on our highways, is highly flammable, and stays close to the ground in the event of an accident.

The other alternative is oil, which has the same dangerous transport issues and its dirtier than gas to boot.

So by the environmentalists rallying to stop a NYC pipeline, they have created a more dangerous and dirtier environment.

Politicians like Liz Warren have joined the anti gas initiative with zero solutions for today.

Replacing a demagogue with another one like Liz is no solution.

You are countering with polling data?  You understand dem primary  delegates do not represent general election voters?

Its Warren's job to provide solutions not create more problems.

If socialist healthcare and significantly driving up the cost of heat without proving the industry is understood, the extremist tag on Warren fits like a glove.

I think cbs is issuing polls to predict final pledged delegate counts,  which is even sketchier math.  It's a silly exercise by them.  How about the states vote first

Nah, I just threw the polling data in there to scare the capitalists that the commies are going to take over.

Seems like an outlier poll, but at 1000 respondents,  that's half the state.

The only electoral vote Trump has a shot at in New England is from that rural congressional district in Maine. Liz Warren or any other Democrat will beat him in New Hampshire and everywhere else.

Ya see I hate these, though. Can someone point me to the details? Because what I'm seeing is this is over many states? These kind of polls are terrible because I can't reiterate enough that the Presidential is abnormal from every other race in the country since it's 50 individual races masked to look like one.

As for the poll in The Hill - it is far out, MOE is 3% so in theory anyone in that range can move one way or another. And as for the outlier there could also be something there since the majority of the other polls are saying otherwise, though Emerson is a decent poll. Especially when narrowed for primaries only. The only reason NH matters so much is for the primary, and this poll is directed at a General. Moral of the story to me is hopefully no one is taking for granted the campaigning that will need to happen post-primary.

It's a poll showing Warren moving up in popular support. It's more about the direction, not about the actual numbers. Just like every other poll.

The more people get to know about her the better off she will be. I can't say that about a lot of the other candidates in this race.

It's also important to throw shade on the false narrative that only Biden can beat Trump.

Everyone likes to back a winner.

That is a narrative I can agree with, I just don't like national polls of popularity for this race pitting one candidate (any of them) against Fuckface. Hillary won that election.

There's lots of false shade.. this one deals with the fact that the media and twitter is not reflective of the Democratic coalition in age, education or region.  And it has a lot of truth to it.

Social media / Twitter is a cesspool. Not reflective of the general population. You will get no disagreement from me there.

What's funny, and not in any way trying to be a smart ass, but I don't think I'm going out on a limb in saying that I'm fairly tapped into at least my local politics (Philly's politics and the surrounding area) and I've never seen a candidate get so much traditional support from the local politicos (ward leaders, Dem City & State Committee) and the sheer amount of money his team is pouring in (his national HQ is here for christsakes) - and his support, at least here, from a non-entrenched Dem level is no where near where he thinks it is. It's not a stretch to say he will lose this city.

Good point - I was going to caveat that, of course, no matter who the Dem is Philly will be incredibly Blue for the General. What I wanted to further elaborate on is the Philly suburbs, which are your typical suburbs of any major city - soccer moms, highly educated women, specifically (a major base that's growing). My gut is Liz is going to kill it with them based on what I know her team is planning around here in those towns.

See above. I also disagree. PA can be made up in Philly alone. I forget the number now, but I want to say PA was decided by ~44k. That can be made up here on its own. But, yes, I do not discount the need to get the women/moms in the 'burbs.

Suburban men vote too, as does Pittsburgh.  Winning women by 20 and losing men by 25 is not a great recipe for a win.
