I've wondered a lot if the 3 hour shows have taken it's toll on the band mentally, even more than it has physically on a bunch of guys who are in their mid-50's. A band known for odd deep cuts live has already dug in to all those deep cuts a whole bunch of times. The 3 hour/no-opener shows took away really great opening bands that have served as clear inspiration to them, let alone an audience. Maybe this band would have more to say, more itch to create, more fire to compete with bands on their level...if they hadn't spent it all.
As far as moving forward? I think they're done really pushing creatively. So I'll take any show they want to put on.
I'd rather them not take a band they've already toured heavily with.

40 minutes from an opener, 50 minutes to set up, and two hours from Pearl Jam Vs. 2:45 to three hours of Pearl Jam. I’m surprised anyone prefers the former.

I definitely agree with those who say not if it means less PJ. But I’ve seen shows that were 3:00 back when they had openers, so I don’t think that would be the case. Ben Harper was great, would love to see him again, among many others. And to those who complain about the wait time it adds, have you not been a night with show? They tell us to arrive promptly at 7:00, not to take the stage until 8:00 anyway. We’ll be waiting around either way, may as well listen to some music.
Hard No for me, especially if it means cutting down on more PJ (which it would inevitably do as a result of venue curfews). Hard, if not impossible to pull off something like Denver 2014 (which I believe was just over 4hrs), when you've got an opener.
In past experiences, I would have preferred to see the opener on their own at a smaller venue performing a full setlist. I love Ben Harper's music, but seeing a 6-8 song setlist just left me wanting for more. Same can be said for just about every opener I've even seen. And in response to the claim that it exposes us to new music, I'd just say that (for me) In 25+ years of going to concerts, I could probably count the number of bands I've "discovered" for the first time as a result of being openers.

Yeah same here, but I still discovered them that way and its a moment I'll cherish forever. I really don't think any counting stats are gonna matter to the folks who wouldn't mind an opener.

This I could get behind. Particularly if they go back to playing sheds in summer. Those parking lots are perfect for this.
It depends on the opener. I enjoy a good opener: MMJ, Band of Horses, KOL, Ben Harper, Black keys. But if it’s a band that I’m not into, than yeah just bring out who I came to see.

If they get onstage close to the ticketed start time, I'm OK with no opener. However, if they're going to wait 60 to 90 minutes like they did at Fenway last year, they might as well have another band fill that time.
