There is a huge field of research about how American cities are designed for cars rather than for other forms of transportation, so it’s kind of crazy to try to claim otherwise. It’s been the major feature of urban planning for many decades until just the last few years, and most of these posts show why - people think it’s too much work or hassle or time to do things any different than jump in their car. Luckily, planners are starting to see things differently now. Even existing cities can be changed somewhat to make walking, cycling and public transit more attractive, for those that aren’t too lazy to get out of their cars. If you look around any well designed city you will see parents dropping kids at school or daycare, people getting to work, people buying groceries, all without using cars.
Of course modern expansion and revitalization efforts are centered around traffic flow, but the origins of most cities predated the advent of the vehicle.  The Big Dig in Boston and obviously the Springfield Junction in DC were clearly designed for traffic flow.  But the original plans and in many cases the first 200 years of a city were not built around automobiles.  The exception of course are in the New South, where cities like Houston, Dallas, Phoenix, etc.,grew up post Industrial Revolution.  So again, it's a chicken and egg discussion and it circles around.
Let’s not forget the role of lobbying by the automobile and oil industry and the favoritism of freight rail over passenger rail and the demise of the street car and intra and inter city bus travel, all subsidized by the taxpayers at their expense and the environment’s.

Does NOVA commuter rail run on weekends yet or past 7:00 p.m.? It didn’t when I commuted into DC.
If you're talking about the VRE then no. But that's a demand issue.  The district is packed with tourists on the weekend.  Locals want no part.   Amtrak obviously runs and the metro.  But down here in Richmond they just opened the new main train station and doubled its size.  This is because Amtrak has improved its trains,  improved its timelines,  made prices more competitive,  installed free wifi and power,  etc. When I moved here 15 years ago,  no one took the train to Baltimore,  Philly, etc.  Now the trains are a first option for many.  If I need to go north of DC, and have some flexibility on time,  it's my go to. So people will do public transportation if it's competitive.
Im curious if others here that live in the NE have seen the growth of the commuter train like I have.

Even big SUV's get decent gas mileage and burn cleaner than ever.  The vehicles are so much cleaner Ontario ditched the drive clean because cars were no longer failing enough to justify its continued use...

Until Team Trump Treason jettisoned Obama era mileage standards against the advice of the auto industry, forcing a conundrum for them as states like CA stick to the higher mileage standards. I suppose it also depends on which “market” is demanding it.

They did ditch them, you're right.  But I haven't heard that GM, Ford etc., have changed their supply chain to increase emissions.  I think that's in the automotive culture now and it would be bad reputationally to increase emissions.  It also costs a lot to re-tool, and they would have to re-tool again if/when the admin changes.  If I'm wrong, please correct me.

People in her glorifying driving their SUVs while it being a big environmental problem.

    Amazing.
Maybe I should get a Mini Cooper and tie my kids to various parts of the car.  Two kids on the hood, one can hang from the bumper and the the other two can sit on top of each other in the back.

Why would they go back to old mileage standards and emission standards after they invested millions and millions in R&D to develop the latest standards...

If my memory serves, they ditched the “mandatory” mileage standard of achieving 50 mpg for passenger cars and 35 for light trucks and vans, maybe SUVs, by 2025 or 2030 or somewhere in there and made it voluntary, which puts the kabosh on the continued investment and research into more efficient engines, stronger, lighter vehicle bodies, etc. If CA keeps the Obama standards mandatory, it makes it more expensive to sell in CA and you’re running two different production lines. They either keep going and try to meet the Obama standards, run two production lines or withdraw from the CA market. Again, if memory serves. It was just a stupid Team Trump Treason move because the auto industry wasn’t clamoring for it and we’ve got to do something about the contributions to non-existent climate change. Maybe we can get a coal fired car? Put Mcgruff’s kids to work?

It’s true that too many people are driving too big a SUV. But they certainly have their place for families.

Im a sedan guy. And I’m getting tired of not being able to see around bigger cars!

My folks had three kids (doing their part to increase world population).  When we were in our early teens, my folks bought a 1965 Chevy Nova that looked something like this (only blue):
We got around just fine with just that one car.

Now days you see soccer moms with maybe one or two kids (at least some of them are not population the planet as quickly), but they drive them around in vehicles much larger...

...and dad has his own car too.  We are a car crazy culture and that's not doing this planet one bit of good.

Admittedly, many larger cars today get better gas mileage, but they could get better if manufacturers wanted them too.  Mileage in some cars has actually began to worse again.  And no way would a Hummer get better mileage than our Nova.  It had a 6 cylinder engine and got excellent gas millage for a car of its time.

Also- in 2008, when we were looking at replacing a nearly dead Honda Civic, we looked at the data on Consumer Reports for many vehicles and the best vehicle over-all was (at that time) the Prius.  One of the very worst vehicles in terms of dependability, economy, longevity, etc. was the Hummer.  They got VERY low marks.  As Neil would say,, "PIECE OF CRAP!"

Yeah, my city is not well designed for walking, public transit, or cycling at all.  There has been a push to make it more pedestrian friendly, but to fully expect the majority of the residents to stop driving would be naive.  I would say that the majority of my city’s growth happened after the automobile came along.
You're in Austin, right?  TX is the New South for sure.
No, not in Austin.  I’m there all the time and they may have a little better transit, but not great.  Most Texas cities are “spread out” and the priority was set for drivers .  There are no Subways (other than the restaurant ;)).  Some, like Dallas, have a transit train, but it is definitely something Texas cities need to improve on.  Depressing thing is that in Lubbock, for example, they tried to get a good system of rentable scooters and things to make getting around more convenient for pedestrians, but after the basketball playoffs this year, a bunch of idiots threw them in the lakes.  I loved visiting Seattle and not having to worry about renting a car to get around.  So much more would be possible if it weren’t for the dumbasses out there that get a kick out of vandalism.  “This is why we cannot have nice things”.

I wonder about those scooter things. We have three companies competing here in Gothenburg with the electric scooters. But I don't get why all of them don't end up in the canal on friday/saturday night..? But hasn't happened yet. I guess you need just the right sporting event for it to happen.

All it takes is 2 or 3 dumbasses, give it time.  But hopefully they will stay good and dry!!!

Watching an interview with Harris right now and I must say she is really growing on me. Biden/Harris would be amazing.

Busing was a failed policy.  I find it interesting that all of these people who weren't subject to it are extolling it.  There's a reason it's been dead for 35 plus years.  I was a bit disappointed by Harris's comment on it, as I found it opportunistic.  I also didn't understand if she was saying that she was bused and that it was a good thing, or what.  The reality is that large majorities of blacks and whites were against the policy at the time.  When it's your kids on the bus for 3 hours a day, it makes a difference.  I pointed out before that all research showed that it didn't change test scores for AA's and worse, it created the 'white flight' epidemic that pulled needed tax dollars out of the cities, as people moved to the suburbs.
Full disclosure, my sister was bused in Cleveland city schools, from the west side to the east side.  It's what led my family into the suburbs.  The story is not unique.  My parents were very much against the policy.  It wasn't that they were racist, they just didn't want her on the bus 3 hours a day.
It wasn’t a failed policy. In fact, it had tangible effects and did as intended. Lots of history here and explanation of the results and why you might think it failed.

I wish they would focus on more current and pertinent issues.  I feel like we will be debating the merits of the Louisiana Purchase before the end of the year.

Agreed. It reminds me of when pj ticket prices get high and people are like, “what happened to the people who fought Ticketmaster?” Yeah that was 25 years ago, give me a break. People change.
