If you're talking about the VRE then no. But that's a demand issue. The district is packed with tourists on the weekend. Locals want no part. Amtrak obviously runs and the metro. But down here in Richmond they just opened the new main train station and doubled its size. This is because Amtrak has improved its trains, improved its timelines, made prices more competitive, installed free wifi and power, etc. When I moved here 15 years ago, no one took the train to Baltimore, Philly, etc. Now the trains are a first option for many. If I need to go north of DC, and have some flexibility on time, it's my go to. So people will do public transportation if it's competitive.Halifax2TheMax said:

many newer suvs are midsize. hybrid or flex fuel. offering much better mileage than your imagination would let you believe.

Until Team Trump Treason jettisoned Obama era mileage standards against the advice of the auto industry, forcing a conundrum for them as states like CA stick to the higher mileage standards. I suppose it also depends on which “market” is demanding it.mickeyrat said:

They did ditch them, you're right. But I haven't heard that GM, Ford etc., have changed their supply chain to increase emissions. I think that's in the automotive culture now and it would be bad reputationally to increase emissions. It also costs a lot to re-tool, and they would have to re-tool again if/when the admin changes. If my memory serves, they ditched the “mandatory” mileage standard of achieving 50 mpg for passenger cars and 35 for light trucks and vans, maybe SUVs, by 2025 or 2030 or somewhere in there and made it voluntary, which puts the kabosh on the continued investment and research into more efficient engines, stronger, lighter vehicle bodies, etc. If CA keeps the Obama standards mandatory, it makes it more expensive to sell in CA and you’re running two different production lines. They either keep going and try to meet the Obama standards, run two production lines or withdraw from the CA market. Again, if memory serves. It was just a stupid Team Trump Treason move because the auto industry wasn’t clamoring for it and we’ve got to do something about the contributions to non-existent climate change. We got around just fine with just that one car.Now days you see soccer moms with maybe one or two kids (at least some of them are not population the planet as quickly), but they drive them around in vehicles much larger...

Mileage in some cars has actually began to worse again. And no way would a Hummer get better mileage than our Nova. It had a 6 cylinder engine and got excellent gas millage for a car of its time.Also- in 2008, when we were looking at replacing a nearly dead Honda Civic, we looked at the data on Consumer Reports for many vehicles and the best vehicle over-all was (at that time) the Prius. One of the very worst vehicles in terms of dependability, economy, longevity, etc. was the Hummer. They got VERY low marks.
