It’s been the major feature of urban planning for many decades until just the last few years, and most of these posts show why - people think it’s too much work or hassle or time to do things any different than jump in their car. Luckily, planners are starting to see things differently now. Even existing cities can be changed somewhat to make walking, cycling and public transit more attractive, for those that aren’t too lazy to get out of their cars. If you look around any well designed city you will see parents dropping kids at school or daycare, people getting to work, people buying groceries, all without using cars.
Does NOVA commuter rail run on weekends yet or past 7:00 p.m.? It didn’t when I commuted into DC.
Im curious if others here that live in the NE have seen the growth of the commuter train like I have.0 -
many newer suvs are midsize. hybrid or flex fuel. offering much better mileage than your imagination would let you believe.

Even big SUV's get decent gas mileage and burn cleaner than ever. The vehicles are so much cleaner Ontario ditched the drive clean because cars were no longer failing enough to justify its continued use...Give Peas A Chance…0

Why would they go back to old mileage standards and emission standards after they invested millions and millions in R&D to develop the latest standards...Give Peas A Chance…0

Amazing. My folks had three kids (doing their part to increase world population). When we were in our early teens, my folks bought a 1965 Chevy Nova that looked something like this (only blue):We got around just fine with just that one car.Now days you see soccer moms with maybe one or two kids (at least some of them are not population the planet as quickly), but they drive them around in vehicles much larger......and dad has his own car too. We are a car crazy culture and that's not doing this planet one bit of good."It's a sad and beautiful world"-Roberto Benigni0 -

We are a car crazy culture and that's not doing this planet one bit of good.Admittedly, many larger cars today get better gas mileage, but they could get better if manufacturers wanted them too. Mileage in some cars has actually began to worse again. And no way would a Hummer get better mileage than our Nova. It had a 6 cylinder engine and got excellent gas millage for a car of its time.Also- in 2008, when we were looking at replacing a nearly dead Honda Civic, we looked at the data on Consumer Reports for many vehicles and the best vehicle over-all was (at that time) the Prius. One of the very worst vehicles in terms of dependability, economy, longevity, etc. was the Hummer. They got VERY low marks. As Neil would say,, "PIECE OF CRAP!""It's a sad and beautiful world"-Roberto Benigni0 -
