show me one Quality of Life metric where Sweden would be "second rate" compared to the US?
I guarantee we have better Mexican food...I’m not sure I want to live somewhere without a great Tex-Mex Restaurant in the vicinity.
Keep your 2nd rate “Swedish Cuisines” and high ass tax rate.
I’ll take my fajitas and ability to actually afford to go somewhere on my vacation days that I never really need all of every year!
And yes, politicians suck (thread integrity)

Starting at 60 k?  I don't think that will happen.  I agree that teachers are underpaid but I also have a problem with a few other factors.  To start with, parents expecting teachers to do the parenting.  And parents who don't participate in kids education.

The other thing may or may not be a problem any more but when I was in teaching, I had issues with the quality of work from many of my fellow teachers.  I taught a 5/6 combo for a few years, subbed grades 4 through 12 for 4 years and worked with a community college course for a couple years.  There were great teachers, of course, but there we also people in the job who had no business doing it.  SOme really, really poor excuses for teachers.  I often thought they needed weeding out.

So if we are to raise teacher salaries, great!  But at the same time, we need to cut out the slackers and dead wood and make teaching a respectable profession staffed with professional people.
Agreed.  I think they should be paid more, generally, but we should also expect more.  I would like that our best and brightest want to teach.  I'm not sure that's the case today (McGruff aside, of course).  Teachers in VA make in the 70's.  That's not terrible.  If the federal min wage was 60, the net effect of that will be that the good teachers' salaries are compressed to support the new and poor teachers.  It's pure economics, something that escapes Bernie and many socialist.
This is why Bernie has no chance. Everyone agrees teachers are underpaid but 60k starting point is ridiculous.

My wife's a teacher. Started at around 45k. Got her masters and continued to accrue more and more credits. 10+ years later she's making over 80k.

"Scandinavian income taxes raise a lot of revenue because they are actually rather flat. In other words, they tax most people at these high rates, not just high-income taxpayers. The top marginal tax rate of 60 percent in Denmark applies to all income over 1.2 times the average income in Denmark. From the American perspective, this means that all income over $60,000 (1.2 times the average income of about $50,000 in the United States) would be taxed at 60 percent.

Sweden and Norway have similarly flat income tax systems. Sweden’s top marginal tax rate of 56.9 percent applies to all income over 1.5 times the average income in Sweden. Norway’s top marginal tax rate of 39 percent applies to all income over 1.6 times the average Norwegian income.

Compare this to The United States. The top marginal tax rate of 46.8 percent (state average and federal combined rates) kicks in at 8.5 times the average U.S. income (around $400,000). Comparatively, few taxpayers in the United States face the top marginal rate."

Spiritual do you make minimum wage?  Is that why this isn't a big deal to you?

My wife and I, two teachers, would be taxed at 56.9% if we were like Sweden!  No way could we afford our house, cars, kids, vacation, etc.  Shit I'd be drinking bud light and driving by kid to day care on the back of my scooter. lol

My brother who is a teacher, and his gf is a nurse, can afford house, car (SAAB), kids, vacation etc.

Get out of your hole, spit out the koolaid and start thinking a tad. I know you need mrussels respect. But come on now.
I thought you said they had a car? 1 SAAB? Now that’s embarrassing
You know SAAB is a great car. So your post might come off as a little cute. But not much more than that.
Didn't SAAB go out of business like 10 years ago?

This does not match what I've heard from mechanics.

So what models are you referring too, and what problems?

15 cars that refuse to die

"We do see a lot of them through the shop," says Chris Campbell, a technician at Swedish Solution, in Westbrook, Maine. "Their owners are pretty fanatical about their cars. We have one who drives her 1983 900 Turbo across the country twice each year, and the last time we did service on her car, a routine brake job, her car had over 435,000 miles and was still running like a top." The Wisconsin Automotive Museum near Milwaukee features a 1989 Saab 900 SPG that was driven more than a million miles before being donated.

    Swedish law of vacation

The Swedish semester law gives all employees the right to five weeks semester per semester year. Of these you have the right to work for four weeks of coherent holidays in June - August.

What does the law for workers right in the US say?

    Oh wait:

There is no legal requirement for employers to provide paid vacation in the USA.

As my buddy from Panama explained to me, you can't be lazy in the US.  You either work or you don't make it.

vacation should be determined by your job, there should be no national law.

You are debating something rather pointless, but yes you are all correct - the uncontrolled fat-levels in the US does shriek of "second rate" country.

I get 28 days of paid vacation time next year, is that more than none?
    I have 6 weeks.
Two more days, wow lol.  So 28 days is more than none?
    Swedish law of vacation

The Swedish semester law gives all employees the right to five weeks semester per semester year. Of these you have the right to work for four weeks of coherent holidays in June - August.

What does the law for workers right in the US say?

    Oh wait:

There is no legal requirement for employers to provide paid vacation in the USA.

I can't imagine if there was some sort of exchange program and Swedish people worked in the United States, that would be some funny stuff.  Yeah you have to work here dude to make ends meet.
As my buddy from Panama explained to me, you can't be lazy in the US.  You either work or you don't make it.

vacation should be determined by your job, there should be no national law.
This is the most insane thing I have ever read on this board. After how much workers have had to fight to have any rights - that is to be blunt, disgusting. Where the fuck would someone pick up an opinion like that from...

... oh, wait I'm pretty sure where from. The country flunking in about every metric regarding "decency".

you can't seriously believe this. like, seriously. that's asinine mcgruff. people in canada and the US are among the laziest and fattest in the world.
Equating lazy and fat is not accurate.
well you don't see a whole lot of middle aged skinny people driving around amusement parks in golf carts, now, do you?
Just saying, there are lazy fat people and plenty of lazy skinny people.   If fact, sometime being fat is driven by being an extremely hard worker that just doesn't prioritize their personal health as much as they should.

That’s very true.  Some of the hardest working people I’ve ever known were overweight.  Not because they didn’t bust their asses, but because they maybe overindulged in the fruits of their labor.  Some were smokers, I know one that would eat a big bowl of ice cream every day after working 14 hours on the farm.  True, there are some of these pudgy fat dudes around that just sit around eating Doritos and playing Fortnight all day, but you can usually tell the difference because those lazy asses can barely walk up a flight of stairs, much less climb in and out of tractors or run a sewer line.  Often the hardest working people do not have time for a gym membership or to cook up a healthy meal, they just grab something and go back to work.
Most lazy asses I know are actually really skinny and have no meat on their bones.  Some people with crazy high cholesterol are skinny little shits that probably “work” less than 30 hours a week.
It really is a bad generalization to make.
