    Have you been following the crackdown in Saudi Arabia on people (including Americans) who are fighting for basic women's rights?  It's literally a middle finger to Congress and America.  Of course Trump will do or say nothing.

    The Prime Minister of Malaysia was on Democracy Now about a week ago, and was talking about how frustrating he finds it when his Muslim nation is grouped with the Arabic Muslim countries. I would tend to agree with him. I don't think the lineage of these belief systems are unique to religion or country culture, but are created out of the combination of circumstances.

    If untrue, Malaysia wouldn't be what it is today - a melting pot in the truest sense of the world, where religions and cultures are openly shared, and citizens of all walks of life engage respectfully with each other. I spent about three weeks there a few years ago, and really felt a sense of acceptance of 'otherness' that I've rarely experienced elsewhere.

    I agree. I’m a firm atheist, but I don’t blame Islam for the horrific behaviour of some muslims, just like I don’t blame Christianity for the horrific behaviour of some Christians, or Judaism for the horrific behaviour of the Israeli government. 

    I personally think the world would be a much better place with no religion, but I’m not kidding myself that it would be perfect. Human nature is not perfectable; it’s violent and xenophobic.

    I wonder if this was always so?  There are some scientists who believe early hominids were mostly timid scavengers.  In any case, whether violence and xenophobia are intrinsic characteristics of ours or not, it seems strange to me that with our big brains we have not evolved to understand that there are ways we can get along and all be content.  We have so much more to gain by being cooperative.
