Dinosaur Jr doing their great cover of The Cure's "Just Like Heaven".   Robert Smith said The Cure started playing the song more like Dinosaur did after they heard the cover.
“The fear of death follows from the fear of life. A man [or woman] who lives fully is prepared to die at any time.”
Variously credited to Mark Twain or Edward Abbey.

While all the OGs are great, I think the GnR version of Live or Let Die is WAY better than McCartney's, and Johnny Cash's Hurt is much better than NIN's (even NIN admits that). I don't think I can get on board with Billy Jean being better by Chris though. It's a great cover, but it was honestly already a perfect song when MJ did it - I don't think he really left any room for improvement.

Every time this topic comes up (whether here or with my friends, a group of people I just met, etc) everyone blows their nut over Johnny Cash's cover of Hurt.  I really wish I got what you all are getting because I've always thought it was a god awful abomination of a cover.

I just think it's a good cover of a rather mediocre song. The only reason I think Cash's Hurt is a great cover because it is a good example of vastly improving upon an original song, which IMO is the only reason anyone should be covering anything. That doesn't mean I think it's a crazy good song when Cash does it. It's okay when NIN does it, and it's okay+ when Cash does it, lol (and FTR, it's okay- when EV does it. I don't really get why Eddie bothers with it).
I am surprised to see anyone say it's an abomination of a cover. Does that mean you love the NIN version?? I personally think that Cash's version is better because it's just got more feeling and depth to it than the NIN version.

I am NOT a NIN fan at all. Cash did it as honestly as it can be done. like Soul said... not a very good song to begin with.

Yeah, I've always loved the NIN original, one of my favorites in his/their catalog.  It resonates with me so much more.  Double that with the fact that I'm just not a Johnny Cash fan to begin with (although I do enjoy his cover of Rusty Cage, and A Boy Named Sue was one of my favorite songs as a kid) and that's why I'm a bit baffled by all the hurrah that his cover of Hurt gets.

The video makes Johnny’s version even more haunting.

I don't get why Eddie sings the Cash lyrics instead of Reznoes, while still introduces it as a Reznor-song. Sing the original lyrics then... you phony. :)

  • I fell down the rabbit hole here this morning. Great thread. Mine off the top of my head:

Ben Harper - The Drugs Don’t Work
    Gomez - Black Eyed Dog
    Jose Gonzalez - Heartbeats
Father John Misty - The Suburbs
Counting Crows - Friend of the Devil
Johnny Cash - Hurt (love the debate on this. Love it or dislike it, it is better than NIN version. So much more feeling).

That's what makes music so great(matter of taste, and everyone has one)

But, for me, the Tool version of No Quarter  doesn't touch Led Zeppelin's version. I thought it was just okay.

Yes I am a biased Claypool fanboy... but their version is deadly.
