Here's a bunch of others, some I agree with (8-10 for starters).

I never saw this list till looking at this thread. He's found some good ones but some are really off the wall. Jose Feliciano's version of Light My Fire is better than the Doors? :wtf:

Also, as a fan, I have to point out that #92 is dead wrong. The Who did not cover Blue Cheer's original of Summertime Blues. The original was by Eddie Cochran:
    http://youtu.be/MeWC59FJqGc

The Who were playing it back when they were still the Detours. I like Cochran's version a lot but will admit to being partial to The Who's. ;)

"Quinn The Eskimo (Mighty Quinn)" - Manfred Mann's version (just called "Mighty Quinn") is better than Dylan's IMO.

Also, I like Johnny Cash's "Hurt" better than NIN's.

I think the Foo Fighters always add something to a cover...

    Born On The Bayou(CCR) - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kh7P3gmm_cM

Band On The Run(Paul McCartney and Wings) - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g7grAuTtjgE

Darling Nikki(Prince) - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GAN-PMt9EuI (sorry for the weird video, I was trying to find a non-live copy and the only one I could find readily is about some chick and her cat but with the lyrics.)

I'll add the Foo Fighters cover of Keep the Car Running by Arcade Fire. I like it better than the original.

The fact that I still think the original of "Hallelujah" is the best aside, I am looking through this list and stomping my foot and disagreeing with #20. There is No.Freaking.Way. Whitney Houston's version of "I Will Always Love You" is better than Dolly Parton's. I HATED that song until I heard Dolly Parton sing it. When Dolly sings it, it's a beautiful song. The Whitney Houston version has me falling over things trying to change the radio channel. It is cringe-inducing, painful to hear.

#21 -- Jose Feliciano? That one has to be a joke.

"Tainted Live" might be one of the best covers ever.

"She's Not There"?? Nah. Santana's great, but the Zombies did it best.

"Sweet Jane" -- Cowboy Junkies do a very interesting rendition; it's so different that I don't know if it evn can be compared to Lou Reed's version.

"Dancing Barefoot." -- The Church put U2's cover to shame. I wish I could find a studio version of it, it's amazing. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dpxw0XqGIp4

The Church also do an interesting cover of "Hounds of Love." As much as I love the Church, I don't know that I prefer their cover to Kate Bush.

"Brown Eyed Girl" -- There's only one Van Morrison, and shame on anyone who suggests Jimmy Buffett sings it better.

Aztec Camera's cover of "Jump" makes me giggle every time I think of it. It's like a complete deconstruction of Van Halen: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=COtZZmWKcRI

Flying Lizards, "Money" -- Yeah, great cover.

Concrete Blonde's cover of "Everybody Knows" -- yes, her vocals add something to the song. Are y'all familiar with "I'm Your Fan"? http://www.amazon.com/Im-Your-Fan/dp/B000002ISX REM's cover of "First We Take Manhattan" is *excellent*, and I think the Pixies "I Can't Forget" also outdoes the original.

Sinead O'Connor, "Nothing Compares 2 U" -- Should be at the top of this list. Amazing.

Soup Dragons, "I'm Free" -- I didn't even know that was a cover!

"Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds" -- What, no mention of William Shatner's cover?!? ;)

The Church did an album of covers, called Box of Birds: http://www.amazon.com/Box-Birds-Church/dp/B00000JPDC

    Some of my favorites:

    George Harrison's "It's All Too Much" -- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TIVwpP7h25Q

    Television's "Friction" -- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fZk1_FOdES0

Ultravox, "Hiroshima Mon Amour" -- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qsrY7zIRueI

Simple Man is a decent cover, but it just doesn't begin to approach the Skynyrd version.

Five Finger Death Crotch reserved an especially fiery spot in hell for themselves for what that did to Bad Company.

I was familiar with Dolly Parton's version years before Whitney's (kind of hard to avoid country music if you live in Texas) and always thought it was lovely. I think the fact that she wrote it probably added to her interpretation. Whitney's version is overblown and awful.

Agreed, nothing will ever best the full live version from Song Remains the Same. Phish does a damn good cover during live shows though.

  • Chicago made "I'm a Man" by Spencer Davis Group much better.

Bowie's version of "Across the Universe" has more soul and feeling than the original by the Beatles.
