this is checkpoint 56 on shuhada street in al khalil. the soldiers decide when they will let you through. as an internatinal i was required to show my passport and even that wasnt a guarantee that we'd be able to pass through. as for the palestinians, it was like playing roulette as to whether theyd be allowed through to go to school/ work/shopping or visit friends and family. that wetness you can see it sewerage. it was coming from down the hill from behind another checkpoint at tell rumeida. day after day i watched children navigate this waste on their way to and from school. while i was there the palestinians were not allowed to fix it because they didnt have the permission of the occupying force... it has since been fixed.

this is al shuhada st. once a thriving street. in 1994 baruch goldstein a jewish man from brooklyn opened fire inside the ibrahimi mosque killing 29 worshippers and injurying many many more. though they did nothing wrong, in retaliation a curfew was imposed on the palestinians though the settlers were allowed to move around freely. palestinians were also expelled from shuhada street(and others). jewish settlers have moved into some of the buildings with the blessing of the israeli govt and under the protection of the occupying force.
