A friend of mine had a theory.

So Snoke was killed by getting cut in half, but Darth Maul was also cut in half and was able to use the dark side to sustain himself until he was found and then saved. That being said, the current working title for Episode IX is "Black Diamond", and Snoke wears a black diamond ring on his hand. So is it possible that he returns like Darth Maul did and plays a continued role in the next episode and we still get some more backstory on him?

    How did Darth Maul return?
In the Clone Wars I believe
    Really? I don't remember this.
    It’s getting weird in here.

I think it would be sweet if the next film opens with simultaneous funerals for Leia and Snoke.
Or the Resistance and all the good guys get attacked at Luke's funeral by the First Order and it starts that flame of rebellion in the galaxy.

Yeah, well, Mark Hamill’s Luke Skywalker was a big fucking sissy.

Rian Johnson’s Luke Skywalker > Mark Hamill’s Luke Skywalker

And while we’re at it Rey >>>>>>>>>> Luke

    An idea for ep9...
Snoke comes back, he then tries to kill Kylo and Rey.
Kylo and Rey need to team up to overcome him despite being on opposite sides of the force. Same way they teamed up to fight off Snoke's guards in ep8.
Rey gets killed by Snoke during a battle and this causes Kylo to turn back to the light and he goes about redeeming himself by training a new generation of Jedi kids to make up for destroying what Luke built. The movie ends with Luke's and Rey's force ghosts smiling upon Kylo and he at them at the new academy.

So half of fans loved it and half hated it or some are conflicted.
Maybe Rian wanted us to all feel how Kylo feels, conflicted.

even from his initial introduction in The Force Awakens I was never a fan of Finn. I really dislike his character even more after this one. I felt they wasted a lot of time on his character, and in my opinion he (Finn) is just worthless in these movies. No background on Snoke? What about Knights of Ren? Nothing? The casino scene was horrible in my opinion. Floating Leia was flat out comical. I did like the Kylo/Rey scene when they kicked ass together

it’s star wars, not citizen kane.

  • Currently watching The Force Awakens.  The Last Jedi could only wish to be half this good.

I'm sure he's not happy that people are using his nuanced and evolving opinion to trash what was obviously a great film.

Empire is the clear best. A New Hope and Force Awakens are basically tied for second place. The Ewok stuff and lighter tone hurts Return of the Jedi but Jabba's palace and the climax aboard the second Death Star are both awesome. Rogue One is only memorable because of the third act but that third act is SO GOOD. Last Jedi checks in ahead of the crap prequels but the more I think about it the less I like it.
