    In the time it came out... Halloween was a great flick. The music alone set it apart somewhat from its contemporaries.

    Yeah, I guess it isn't fair to lay all the blame for the terrible era of slasher films on the one that started it all.
    When it came out it was startling precisely because of it's lack of cerebral stimulation.

    Halloween was the first and only movie that made me sleep with the lights on.  That was the first movie that made you think your neighbor could be a serial killer.  Kinda like jaws made you scared of the ocean.

    Are you talking about that abomination of a remake Rob Zombies made cause you can't be talking about John Carpenters film. There was very little blood shown.
    My top 3 horror film and it's considered a classic for a reason.

    yeah it was pretty much the opposite of that.
    I feel like I haven't been watching the same movie that @rgambs has for all these years.

    Eh, entirely overrated.
    No story, nothing to think about, just freaky music and a big guy with a knife.  It spawned an entire genre of terrible movies where half naked girls ran upstairs and hid in closets.  I guess those weren't Halloween's fault though.
    I guess in it's day it was good, but by the time I was old enough to watch it, there was nothing to be afraid of.  Hasn't aged well.
    Yeah, psychos are everywhere, big whoop. In 1978 that was big news with the attention the serial killers were getting, but I grew up in a world that was used to that. 

    The Exorcist aged much better, that still gives me the Willie's.


    Also, it's easy to sit on your porch and yell at the kids on your lawn, but at least Zombie's remake actually dealt with a story.  The backstory and exposition for the original is weak.

    Idk how you can say there isn't a story in the original.
    And as far as the mystery of Michael Myers in the first, THATs what makes it scary! Not knowing why this guy is going around killing people. He's just total Evil.
    We don't need some silly white trash backstory as presented by Zombie as to try and explain the reasoning. Completely defeats what The Shape is all about.

    Maybe I'm just an oddball. I like stories with things to think about, not just a guy walking around with a knife, stabbing people.
    Friday the 13th blew me away, Halloween left me wondering why people liked it at all.
    For me, The Thing was Carpenter's better work, it kept you guessing and wondering.
    Halloween is a classic American horror movie, I can't deny that, but like so much of what happened between 1975 and 1990, I just scratch my head and wonder WTF were people thinking.

But just like with music, sometimes people "get" movies that others don't "get". Or maybe it's closer to say some "feel" them while others don't ... seems like that's the case here :) ).

    I came up in the Scream and I Know What You Did Last Summer era, so I need the blood because the precedent has been set, and I need more than just slashing and stabbing because it's so overdone.

    It isn't a horror movie, but Pan's Labyrinth sustained a creepy vibe very well.  Bouncing between surrealism and hyperrealistic and hardcore violence, interesting and original aesthetics.
    Not horror, but any fan of horror should enjoy it.

    It's a toss up between The Thing and Halloween as far as my top Carpenter films.
    As for Halloween, as much as it popularized the slasher genre, it owes a lot to the Canadian film,  Black Christmas, which came out a couple years prior. Heavily influenced Carpenter and it's a solid movie.
    F13th took the slasher genre and busted it out into the mainstream. I'm a fan but will always prefer Halloween to the Friday series even tho the F13th series as a whole is stronger.

    I like these types of films with some meat to them...a solid psychological angle.  Sometimes that can be more horrific than blood.
