Radicalization.
I went to a fascinating talk on radicalization a few months ago and took a few notes on my phone. Doesn't matter if we are talking about being radicalized to be a terrorist or a gang member, the process and key points remain the same.
My notes, cryptic as they are, include the following points:
Ideology instead of identity (i.e. individuals without a strong personal identity gravitate to ideology to give it to them)
Certainty (i.e. there's no room for wishy-washyness; it's always reinforced that the cause is right)
Your actions matter (even if in the rest of your life you're a loser)
Fight the good fight (even if you go down, your life has been worth it)
Revenge/justice (for perceived personal loss of humiliation)
Redemption - clean the slate (if you have screwed up in the rest of your life, this makes you whole and worthy again)
Romanticism - the heroic sacrifice
Mortality salience - when reminded of your mortality you more strongly defend your beliefs (i.e. if you are taking risks, human nature wants the cause to be worth it, so merely taking the risks reinforces your idea that your cause is just).

Sad to see the history and culture of our great country being ripped apart with the removal of our beautiful statues and monuments. You can't change history, but you can learn from it. Robert E Lee, Stonewall Jackson - who's next, Washington, Jefferson? So foolish! Also the beauty that is being taken out of our cities, towns and parks will be greatly missed and never able to be comparably replaced!
