    It is a valid point about the George Washington being a slave owner.  Is that a first or second thought about him to Americans when they hear his name.

    No it's not. There are statues of Washington because he was leader of the Continental Army and this nation's first president, not because of his plantation. There are statues of Robert E. Lee because he was a confederate general who led the Army of Northern Virginia in revolt against this nation. These things aren't the same and this point is not valid.
