    Mandela on Cuba Castro

In 1991, Nelson Mandela traveled to Cuba to thank Fidel Castro and the Cuban people for supporting the fight against apartheid and colonialism in southern Africa. "The decisive defeat of the aggressive apartheid forces [in Angola] destroyed the myth of the invincibility of the white oppressor," Mandela said. "The defeat of the apartheid army served as an inspiration to the struggling people of South Africa." Below are excerpts from the speech:

NELSON MANDELA: We have come here today recognizing our great debt to the Cuban people. What other country has such a history of selfless behavior as Cuba has shown for the people of Africa? How many countries benefit from Cuban health care professionals and educators? How many of these volunteers are now in Africa? What country has ever needed help from Cuba and has not received it? How many countries threatened by imperialism or fighting for their freedom have been able to count on the support of Cuba?

Yeah, dumb statement by Trudeau. I think he's generally okay, but this was silliness.

Liberals are angry that Justin Trudeau won't criticize Castro. When Trudeau refused to criticize Donald Trump, they called it "diplomacy."
Ted Cruz in angry, Marco Rubio is angry, Lisa Raitt is angry, the alt-right is angry......... actually, given that company, I'm starting to agree with Trudeau.

    Same here.

RIP Fidel. I hope my statement gets all you alt-right nutters panties in a bunch.

His vice presidential running mate, Mike Pence, also took a hard line. "Let me make you a promise," Pence said in Miami just days before the election. "When Donald Trump is president of the United States, we will repeal Obama's executive orders on Cuba."
On Saturday, Pence tweeted: "The tyrant Castro is dead. New hope dawns. We will stand with the oppressed Cuban people for a free and democratic Cuba. Viva Cuba Libre!"

How much has US policy contributed to the overall state of the Cuban People today?

I would argue that very policy with little change for some 50 yrs kept the Castros in power. They could reasonably claim sympathy at home and abroad. They were a perfect pawn early on in the cold war.

    BUSTING DOWN THE PRETENSES

The great American pretense is that communism is to blame for bread lines in Havana but capitalism isn't to blame for poverty in Detroit.

There's never been a coherent methodology about what types of suffering are indicative of the failure of a broad system. It's pure ideology.

Americans ignore their governments dictatorial "interference" with countries that oppose "capitalism and bribery".

Americans fail to equate the suffrage of Cubans under socialism to the suffrage Mexicans under capitalism.

America has a two party democracy, Cuba has single party socialism

"Suffrage" refers to the right to vote. Is that what you're referring to here? I really don't know what point you're trying to make.

It's not so much interesting as to what people say about Castro now that he's dead, but the pressure that they should say certain things.

I doubt their families care about your opinion over a tweet.
as an american - perhaps you should understand your role in the history of cuba before you talk about the deaths of thousands ... perhaps you should look at what american foreign policy is all about ... and finally, perhaps you should look at why americans hate communists so much ...

i find it laughable the collective vitriol that exists for someone who provided free education and health care to all his people ... all this despite crippling sanctions ... did he do bad things!? ... absolutely ... but people have to understand context ... if the US wasn't waging it's economic imperialistic measures - who knows if that stuff would have happened ... america goes all around the world fucking up other countries for pure greed and most of you guys turn a blind eye ... but yet feel like you have the moral authority to decry someone who fought back against that ... you guys have no idea what it means to be fucked over like that ... look where it's gotten you ... the collective ignorance of a nation that has now elected someone who actually represents who most of you really are ... ignorant and selfish ...

not surprising for a country that still celebrates thanksgiving and columbus ...

Well Hitler did oppress political dissent and the press, and imprisoned political activists, and banned trade unions.... There are parallels. Anyone who refuses to recognize parallels between current leaders and Hitler, even when the parallels are proven fact, are simply suffering from a mental block.
