Statement by the Prime Minister of Canada on the death of former Cuban President Fidel Castro
NewsStatement by the Prime Minister of Canada on the death of former Cuban President Fidel Castro
Antananarivo, Madagascar
November 26, 2016
The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today issued the following statement on the death of former Cuban President Fidel Castro:
“It is with deep sorrow that I learned today of the death of Cuba’s longest serving President.
“Fidel Castro was a larger than life leader who served his people for almost half a century. A legendary revolutionary and orator, Mr. Castro made significant improvements to the education and healthcare of his island nation.
“While a controversial figure, both Mr. Castro’s supporters and detractors recognized his tremendous dedication and love for the Cuban people who had a deep and lasting affection for “el Comandante”.
“I know my father was very proud to call him a friend and I had the opportunity to meet Fidel when my father passed away. It was also a real honour to meet his three sons and his brother President Raúl Castro during my recent visit to Cuba.
“On behalf of all Canadians, Sophie and I offer our deepest condolences to the family, friends and many, many supporters of Mr. Castro. We join the people of Cuba today in mourning the loss of this remarkable leader.”By The Time They Figure Out What Went Wrong, We'll Be Sitting On A Beach, Earning Twenty Percent.0 -

Castro attended Trudeau senior's funeral. Obviously his dad and Castro were friends and allies. I am a socialist myself, and still have nothing good to say about Castro, because I don't believe in dictatorships or tyranny. I think Justin should have kept his personal family ties with Castro to himself on this one. I also don't think it's a big deal. That's why I called his statement silly. I think he or his advisors should have thought that one through a bit more before it was posted. I imagine they figured such a bold statement would be good for diplomatic relations with Cuba going forward... and that may well be the case. But they should have reigned it in a lot more, so as not to make it feel like the past tyrannical and deadly acts of Castro and his government are being ignored. In other words, he should have made a somewhat more neutral statement and kept that friendship between his dad and Castro on the down low.DarthMaeglin said:If there's some small consolation over Trudeau's remarks, I was just reading on the CBC site (sorry, still haven't figured out how to post links via my phone, lol) that he's facing backlash and ridicule both here at home and abroad.
I don't rejoice in Castro's death as I did Bin Laden's, but I didn't live through the Cuban Missile Crisis and many of the Castro regime's other misdeeds. My main memory of the man are the many (often tragic) stories of refugees trying to flee Cuba for Florida.
But whatever. Hardly a scandal. It's not like it means Trudeau actually supports dictatorships or anything, so people shouldn't bother getting their panties in a twist over it.Post edited by PJ_Soul onWith all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Why so angry?0 -
Liberals are angry that Justin Trudeau won't criticize Castro. When Trudeau refused to criticize Donald Trump, they called it "diplomacy."PJ_Soul said:Yeah, dumb statement by Trudeau. I think he's generally okay, but this was silliness.

This really got me laughing (the Joker would be proud, lol), taken from the comments on the CBC's story posted above."The world is full of idiots and I am but one of them."

One theme I'm finding disturbing in the comments is the idea that "the people of Cuba benefited from Castro's rule," which may be accurate to a certain degree however ignores that many benefited by an unwanted lead injection or being jailed for thinking a certain way. I've even seen those who fled the country referred to as cowards.
I get Castro wasn't any better than the regime that preceded his, but can we please call a spade a shovel here?"The world is full of idiots and I am but one of them."

I'm not angry at all, but I thought it was silly because he praised him to the rafters and invoked a close family connection, not because he wouldn't criticize him. I wouod not have expected him or wanted him to criticize him. A national leader criticizing another national leader who just died would be ghoulish and inappropriate.PJfanwillneverleave1 said:

Ted Cruz in angry, Marco Rubio is angry, Lisa Raitt is angry, the alt-right is angry......... actually, given that company, I'm starting to agree with Trudeau.PJfanwillneverleave1 said:

BUSTING DOWN THE PRETENSES
The great American pretense is that communism is to blame for bread lines in Havana but capitalism isn't to blame for poverty in Detroit.
There's never been a coherent methodology about what types of suffering are indicative of the failure of a broad system. It's pure ideology.
Americans ignore their governments dictatorial "interference" with countries that oppose "capitalism and bribery".
Americans fail to equate the suffrage of Cubans under socialism to the suffrage Mexicans under capitalism.
America has a two party democracy, Cuba has single party socialism0
