I'm well equipped to push these 30lbs 200w speakers, lol!

    Pioneer 8500ii amp is accompanying.

They sound wonderful. I'll do a comparison soon with the Martin Logan's.

I'm a fan of the period correct, or better yet matched set, amp and speaker combos.
I had a pair of early 60s Acoustic Research AR-2 hooked to a Fisher 500C amp that made my late 80s cassettes sound like in room, 3D immersive experiences. Sadly gone now, and when released both in need of restoration, but sold for way more than I paid, which was about 50 dollars.
It makes me feel sorta sorry for those kids raised on ear buds.

I did a ton of research when I was looking into a vintage setup. There are better components out there but with the 8500ii amp and tuner hooked up to speakers specifically designed for them I was sold.

I'm glad too. They have plenty of power and the sound is great.

I've never thought about doing a cassette again though. I don't think anything will ever be truly analog unless it's a TMR direct to acetate.

I think this has a playing weight of about 25 pounds.

AR 2's are classics. Too bad you sold them. How did you like them?

These were original AR-2 not the AR-2-a, ax, etc. They looked great. The cabinets veneer had been refinished, and someone did a real nice job on them. One of them was sonically perfect, the other one got dropped and after that one was not so good. The dropped one actually never sounded as good as the other one even before the drop. The had the serial number paper still attached and although the numbers were not consecutive, they were 3 numbers apart. I liked getting the money for them better than seeing them and hearing them not work properly.

I have some Pioneer components spread out over my various lineups so I'm down with the PIO.
Elite DV-37 DVD that I use mostly for CDs, an Elite 42 inch Plasma, and a Pio 510A turntable.

I replaced the AR-2s with some got on the cheep Pioneers from the early 70s CS77A.

I play and record my cassettes on a Nakamichi DR-8.

You actually record music to tape still?!?

Also isn't Metal tapes better for sound and longevity?

yeah I'm old and stuck in my ways....I love metal but CrO2's are just fine and cheaper. Normal tapes are super cheap, and decent enough on a good deck. I have a stash. When I see unopened ones, I buy 'em. I even will buy someone else's recorded over metals or chromes if they're priced right.
in a blind test...I'm pretty sure most people would have a hard time telling which was the vinyl and which was the tape.

It's interesting that Fisher's from that era are about as good as McIntosh yet the price difference today on that vintage equipment are far apart. Maybe it's the aesthetic or that Mc has continued to make great equipment.

Does Sonos support HD flac yet? That has been the knock on it.

I don't think it does yet - FLAC files are definitely supported as those are the PJ bootleg file types I typically buy (Vault 3 - being my favourite, but the Fenway 1 show is probably 1A now). However, I've never purchased HD FLAC PJ bootlegs or any other HD FLAC tracks, so I don't know for certain.

Sonos is such a cool concept. I love that it supports not only the music that you have stored locally but just about about every streaming service there is not to mention pretty much every terrestrial radio station in the world. I have a few of the wireless speakers spread around the house as well as the module that you can use to turn your regular stereo into a Sonos streamed set up. I can control any and all of it either separately, in zones or all together from the computer or the apps that I have installed on my iPhone and iPad.

This should answer the question about FLAC.

It doesn't support 24/96 audio. That's disappointing today considering the prevalence of that quality. I have Squeezebox Touch which is basically the same thing except it supports up to192. It's an excellent wireless DAC. The bummer is that it is out of production so a used one today goes for the same or more than a new one was. I want a second one because my SB duet is acting quirky but can't justify it yet. Sonos lack of HD support is a deal breaker for me. It's too bad because the DAC is well regarded.
