Picked up a pair of B&W speakers today. I haven't heard them yet but I have high expectations. I've read nothing but great things about them.
Vintage? What are they
They are DM602 S2 bookshelf speakers. I got a great deal on them because one of the tweeters has a small dent in it. Replacement diaphragms for these hard to come by but there are aftermarket ones that cost around $15.00. I figured they were worth checking out.
So far, I have only played a few songs through them. I can't hear any distortion from that tweeter. In fact, I think they sound very good. Lots of bass and a lot of detail. They will probably end up getting used as near field monitors in my home studio.

Those domes get damaged by heavy breathing. It's ridiculous. I recall reading that there should be no audible effect, just visual. I have a pair of 602s and one is bent. I can't tell.

Yeah, they seem pretty delicate. I have been playing them tonight and I can't hear any issues. I might dig into them at some point but they seem fine for now.
How do you like your 602s? Do you think they compare well to some of the other speakers you've had?

Got a steal on this early 90’s JVC XL-Z451. Inside is clean af!! Aside from the top cover it appears almost new. Sounds incredible to my hearing damaged ears!

Dark Matter gets the honorable first spin.
Very cool! Those are great players and very feature-rich. A buddy of mine has one and it sounds very good, indeed. Congrats!

Gifts from my friends parents and one of their friends…. The speakers came from my buddy’s parents. The sansui sp2000’s he bought in Vietnam and had shipped back to the states. The boxes were housing them. Next to those boxes are the actual Sansui lm330’s. I have no idea what the wicker surround speakers are. They look like speakers you’d hang in a studio. I’m unsure of those.
The Marantz 1250 came from the friends parents’ friend. There were other components but those haven’t been found yet.
Haven’t tested squat yet. Happy to have them though. I’ll give them a good home.

Found out it will cost up to $750 to refurbish my old pioneer sx-750. Is this worth it or could I get something better for the money?
That sounds pretty high to me. I think $300-$400 is about the ballpark for a recap, replacing any problematic transistors, cleaning controls and tuner alignment. Those are the basics. Probably unnecessary to recap the AM/FM board or aligning the tuner if you never listen to the radio. Omitting those things should save you some bucks.
That is a great sounding receiver and it is definitely worth keeping going, IMO.

Hey I also have a 750. My son is using it pretty regularly. Several months ago the the left audio went out, actually very faint. I opened it up and cleaned the pots. Turned it back on and it was good. That lasted about five months and now it did it again. Is there a next step I can take without hauling it to a repairman?

If it was mine, I would probably exercise the controls 20 or 30 times, paying special attention to the volume, balance and tape monitor controls. Give each RCA connector a little wiggle and twist on the back, too.
Is it always the same source or does it do it on radio, aux and phono? With channel drop issues, you have to rule out the source and the speakers in addition to the amp/preamp. (I'm sure you already knew that part.)

I'm in Austin so everything is extra expensive here. The best shop in town will only do full rebuilds of old units like this. I called back and I have to authorize up to $750 but that it could actually come in much lower. They just like to make sure that people know this could be expensive work and to be ready to pay if there is a lot to fix.
The unit sounds great and I think I would rather pay extra if needed to get it on top shape to last another 40 years.

Gotcha. That makes more sense if they're just preparing you for a worst-case scenario.
I agree that it is worth it to keep it going. You would have to spend a lot of money to get something new that had the sound quality and level of build quality of that old Pioneer.

Yes it’s at least aux, phono and radio.
As far as exercising controls, do you mean after giving the pots another shot or just in general?

Dry first and listen for any crackling or static sounds coming through the speakers.
If that doesn't help, maybe give them another good cleaning with Deoxit. If that doesn't do the trick, probably best to have it looked at by a tech.

I'm also getting an itch. I spent meeting time yesterday shopping tube preamps. Thinking about going with a hybrid system.
what piece was the gift?
