gas prices

  • I paid $2.45 regular gas to fill up yesterday. It was great not to spend over $50 at the pump. I hope this downward trend continues.

The cheapest gas in the country somewhere in Arizona $1.99 a gallon regular. Outstanding.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't it usually mean that when gas prices are low (and people get excited) that the economy is likely headed downwards, jobs are going to be cut, wages are going to be cut, and you won't have any money anyways... ie, LOW GAS PRICES ARE NOT GOOD?!?! So you lose your job (Say you made $1000/cheque) or your wage goes down (say it goes down by $500 / month) and your property taxes go up (say $500 a year) and you save $20 when you fill your car. How is that something to get amped over? I thought that when gas prices are low, we ought to be freakishly careful with our money because the economy is likely headed into the tank for a while. Am I out to lunch? (errrr.. am I not going to eat this homemade sandwich cuz I can't afford lunch)...?

Not necessarily. Gas pricing is worked out on the speculative market so prices fluctuate constantly and can be driven up or down with rumours, weather conditions and many other factors.

Prices here in New Zealand have finally dropped from NZD$2.08 (USD$7.08) at the end of November to NZD$1.99 per litre (USD$6 per gallon) which has a positive flow on effect for our economy, especially this close to Christmas.

I don't know how it is in the rest of the world but conspiracy theory here is that all oil companies work together to price fix because all stations have the same pricing all of the time. The pricing differs between towns but within 1 town or city all pricing is the same.

They just added a $0.07/gallon tax on gas today. To help pay for transportation and road improvements. All of our gas taxes are supposed to pay for that shit-and we have some if the highest gas prices in the nation. if you've driven here, you know all those taxes are wasted on 'who knows what, bacause it certainly isn't road improvements or transportation'

I would be totally for this: Raise gas prices and use the money to develop alternatives. Our cheap gas prices are only going lead people to drive more and you know the rest of the story.

My commute and driving is minimal. Same for my husband.

Why should we be fucked by higher prices? We're responsible with our resources and our choices.

Raise prices on those who aren't. PLEASE.

What about those who have quite the distance to get to work? Not sure about other areas but in LA, many - MANY - are fucked by time on the road. Fucks with the mind, stress, car. Wallet too? Why are people with electric cars using the roads - HOV lanes welcoming them - but don't have to pay anything for that use?

Surely there is some sort of common sense medium.

I feel thoroughly bludgeoned. Not to worry, I expected that would happen. But I stand by my words. We need to move out of being a car-driving society and making gas cheaper will not help. I don't want to artificially increase the cost of living. I'm not in a high income bracket- in fact probably below average in America- but I'm willing to give it up and look to the future for the benefit of the planet including future generations of people. I'm well meaning in my words, honestly, I mean no harm by my words. I wish no one ill. And I really am for happiness and well being and longevity for all us- animals and critters alike.

B, that wasn't personal toward you - I hope you realize that.

I'm not willing to give up driving for my own reasons - some selfish, some logical.

It's not so simple depending on location, health, many other factors...and really, is that going to happen? I mean, hell, self-driving cars are on the horizon. New cars come with everything to keep you connected. Shit's not going anywhere.

the problem with raising gas prices, even for good reasons, is that with higher gas prices you pretty much raise the praise of all goods and many services. we still deliver lots of good services via truck and all those prices, especially food, would rise as do gas prices. agree though that low gas prices aren't always a good thing either.

That's a good point, pjhawks. I'm just not sure how we can convince Americans to cut back on there driving. Almost everyone agrees more driving is environmentally unsound and yet we don't seem to be doing less driving and SUV sales are as high or higher than ever.

One thing that would help would be to revitalize railroad service in the U.S. Rail transportation is proven to move more pounds of goods per unit of fuel than any other form of transportation (i.e. more energy efficient) and yet our railroads in America are a mess.
