If you use torrents or perhaps reddit, loop loft loops are really great.

A couple more recent covers, just started to get back into recording some stuff after moving this summer. I've been trying to write, but...

Love the SP cover. Such a catchy tune by one of my favorite bands!

Here's a cover of "Seasons." Love playing this song, but the tuning is super weird. https://youtu.be/DoptbL4N4Fk

I just started getting involved into a new style (but often used by many) recording project. Exhausted from the old boards, and another old friend who I've played in past bands with over the years are involved. My old friend comes over once every two weeks in a afternoon. In that time I come up with a song either on bass or guitar. Record it in Garage band. She writes the lyrics, sings and adds any other parts she wants in that same evening. Then we mail it off to Exhausted to add his finishing touches. All of us in one way or another are out of our comfort zone in this process. We do it all quick, unpolished and in the end it ends up really raw. And pretty much however the song is in that small period is the final version of it. Perfectly imperfect.

We have only had two sessions now, which amounts to two songs, and I'm in the process of editing some video to start posting the clips to youtube, facebook and on sound cloud. I believe tomorrow evening I'll have the first song up.

What does Exhausted do with it? Another board member and I have been doing a virtual thing going on 6 years now. I'm interested in hearing more about this.

When we had our EP mastered a few years ago we first balanced and adjusted the eq to the room with a meter. Then we had a friend who was not involved with the recording process come in and master it. I guess it turned out fine for the cost (LOL).

I'd probably ask MIG about it. he would be the first person I'd think of around here.

Whenever possible, I mix my own projects and recordings (mixing is my favorite), so I try to get outside ears on the mastering process. I really like these guys:

Golden Mastering (I worked with John, but I like the stuff JJ has done): http://www.goldenmastering.com/

Dynamic Sound Service (Blake is great, and a bit more affordable): http://dynamicsoundservice.com/

I worked on one particular project years ago, a really long album process that took a lot out of me, and the mastering that the band chose was not my preference. It still bothers me to listen to that album a little. Find a mastering engineer you like, and they're worth their weight in gold.

I love to mix as well. Although my main experience is only on analog boards, nothing motorized. So to me its a performance in itself. I like to make little ear presents that you only pick up in a pair of headphones, zoned out in the mix that may not stand out in a room mix etc...

The last project that I sent to Blake was the "Land Has Never Seemed Further" E.P. by post-rock band This Is a Process of a Still Life. I recorded and mixed this album, and Dynamic Sound mastered it. You can listen to that E.P. here: http://thisisaprocess.bandcamp.com/

I'm sure that Blake would be able to get reference materials to you, if you were a prospective client. He's a super-cool dude to work with.

Sorry to bug you guys - but do any of you know how to set the right amount of headroom on tracks in Garageband? Let's say a track has some 'hot' elements to it, I know that the best thing to do is to set the right volume/headroom from the source when you are recording, but let's say you don't want to go back and re-record anything again. I want to leave room on each track of each song to be mastered but don't know how to do that. Is this more than adjusting the volume on each track?

It sounds like you need to hit something with a compressor to smooth out some peak levels. You can also automate the mixing to "dip" the volume during those peaks. Not sure how to do any of this in Garageband, though. As far as headroom in the stereo mix before mastering, you don't need to get things super-hot, since that's a lot of what the mastering process is about, and digital recordings don't require maximizing gain before distortion the same way analog methods did.

In garageband I don't think you can honestly. But I'm not completely sure, I'm new to it, and use it in a very limited way.

    cool tune guys!

Thanks, the song we did on 11/28/15, which I'll be posting hopefully sometime early next week goes in a completely different direction, and things are a little more serious in this one. The rules are set in stone.

It will be interesting to see how things progress. I know there will be a few times where we won't be able to get together and we are talking about how to handle that as well.

It will also be interesting to come back to these in a year or so and see if they held up.

Again thanks to anyone that takes the time to check out and of the songs, the facebook page etc. We appreciate it.

Also for those interested the youtube version of each song has a little write up from each of the three of us's perspective of each song.

I'm mixing and quasi-mastering these in Logic. Just trying to get the levels up and the overall EQ ok. Since we work quickly it's fairly seat of the pants but Logic has enough tools to get at least decent levels in place.
