THIS IS STILL JUST AN IDEA. I'LL CREATE ANOTHER THREAD ONCE IT'S OPEN

Okay, I'm home now so I can adequately answer comments.

First and foremost....thanks for all the comments. I don't post here a whole lot but have been here for quite some time just admiring the views. I am not going to say that I'm crushed for having to sell the Benny. As a matter of fact I'm kind of excited. The money is going to fund an appropriate burial for our service dog of 10 1/2 years. She was diagnosed with cancer about 4 years ago and wasn't given much of a chance. Recently she's been diagnosed with Cushing's disease and the vet gives her about 9 months to live. She's an Italian Greyhound and full grown is all of 14 pounds. With that (damn) Subaru commercial playing that Willie Nelson song it really inspired us to do something good for her while she's still able to have some fun.Believe me or not...that's my story.

The Benny: I had one originally. I hit a hard spot and had to sell it. I was fortunate enough to be in a position to buy another but not without it costing me a pretty penny. I don't know how to search ebay's historical sales but it it goes back about a year ago there's one that sold "buy it now" for $1600 and it was still sealed. Yup, like I said, I was in a good position to re-aquire what I had to give up some time ago. Since I've had it, I did open it, spin washed all the records, placed them in mobile fidelity master sleeves and put it away. I took it out once to hear All Or None which is by far one of the best songs IMO. And it just sits there. Someone would appreciate this much more than it just sitting in a record cabinet.

So $1600 would have been my goal number to hit. I feel like $100 entry would keep things nice and neat without having to deal with too many entries and paypal payments, etc. I really liked the donation to OYR, so thanks for that suggestion.

I picked up some table top tennis balls and will number from 1 to 20 and draw from a bucket. I'll even go as far to video record the drawing. My magic number is still $1600 so what I plan on doing is make it 20 entries. 16 entries ($1600) covers my original purchase, 1 entry ($100) will cover US shipping or up to $30 international shipping (winner covers rest of actual shipping cost) & packing supplies and the remaining 3 entries ($300) will be donated to OYR in Pixie's name.

Question about using friends and family versus payment for goods. What's the difference besides the 3% I'll be charged? I thought to cover that with the $100 set aside for shipping costs. Any other reason to use friends and family? So no "raffle" comments at all? Can you put any kind of comment? "PJ Benny Extravaganza"? Or how about "Pixie's Party"?

Not familiar with Go Fund Me so don't want the hassle of learning something new just for this.
Any other reasons NOT to do it this way? I'll check back periodically and once I feel like everything's in place I'll begin another Offical thread (that was done on purpose) announcing the beginning of the raffle. We are not starting this yet! I just want to make sure all my ducks are in row. Once I start the thread I'll also post pics of the Benny.

And lastly and I hope this picture posts correctly.....Meet Pixie!

Sad story but it all makes sense to me, man. Others on here will surely know more about all the intricate details, but I will tell you that this may be the only way you'll get that $1600 back, because I think that's a bit high of an asking price for an opened Benny.

With that said, $100 for a 1/20 chance to win a very expensive piece is a great opportunity for people, so I think it's a good idea and people will be happy to help pay your dog's burial for a chance, plus to have a few 100 bones grown to
    OYR.

I would call it Pixies Party or something, don't mention a raffle. Friends and family means there's no charge, goods & services means there's a 3% fee.

Anyway, it makes sense to me. I'm sure someone else here will go over the real specifics.

I would be interested in a raffle $100 is too much for me though. If you go to 80 entries at $20 or something like that, that would be more up my alley.

Sorry, not going to break down to the nickel. I was thinking if I go regular pay for goods the 3% would be $60. Shipping to US might hit $20 insured and by Priority Mail. Maybe Fedex, maybe UPS. Packing materials to ensure a safe journey. Basically would be covering shipping entirely.

If it was international it'd still be $60 to cover 3% fees leaving $40 to ship. International shipping is expensive and sending something like this with it's declared value will really be expensive. I can't cover all that. So that's why the up to $30 being offered for international shipping. I don't know what all the fees and charges will be to send overseas but I can't be expected to eat the costs.

If it's decided that friends and family won't delay or flag the process then I'd cover up to $50 of international shipping since I won't be charged the 3% fee. The rest could cover incidentals: packing materials, time, gas to the post office, a pineapple shake, a nice bone in ribeye for my dog.

Point is that I could have limited this to US only but I'm sure there may be a Benny-less home over seas.

Oh, and one entry per person open for only a week. Not until all 20 slots are filled will I send out payment info. First come, first serve via PM only. Those wanting 2 or more entries can note that in their PM. If there are still spots open at the end of the week then those will be given out on a first asked first served basis.

Not open yet, new thread coming tomorrow afternoon. This has been a great discussion and learning experience for me. Any other questions, comments or advice?

Yeah, me too. I can't afford to lose $100. I do wish we could just buy 1 ticket for $10 or something - get way more people in there for the chance. But good luck.

Suggestion/constructive feedback: Do $25 per entry, max 4 entries per person.
  • manitoumanmanitouman In My Head Posts: 1,073
I thought about the price of $100 for 20 entries. Problem of lowering the price is that your entries number escalates. If we kept at the $2k goal....

$25 per entry equals 80 entries.
$50 per entry equals 40 entries.
$100 per entry equals 20 entries.

The less money per entry the less difficulty it is for me to keep track of everything. I'll think about it but I still feel $100 for a 1 in 20 shot at a Benny is pretty good odds.

Along the same lines....if it was $25 per entry and max of 4 entries....I would have to prepare for someone to specifically ask for certain numbers instead of 4 consecutive numbers.

I also thought about what if I don't get 20 entries? So I've been kicking around the idea of 15 entries as the minimum or we just can the idea. At 15 entries, winner pays actual shipping costs. 16-17 entries and shipping will be covered as described earlier. 18 entries up to the maximum of 20 entries...will be donated to OYR.

Does that make sense or did I just muddy the whole thing up?

All this yapping and I keep forgetting to describe the Benny....I'd give it a near mint rating. It was sealed but I opened it. I don't even think it has scuff marks on the box but will verify tonight. I keep it in a clear sleeve and kept inside a record cabinet standing up. I'm telling you, I'm anal about how I care for my stuff.

Best thing to do is post pics of it with any description. Yeah, I'd say $100 per ticket is steep to most. If I were you I'd at least do $50 or less, just my opinion... I think you'd get more involvement with the $50 mark. If you need the money fast, then I'd just straight out sell it. But like someone else said, you'd probably not get many takers for $1600 for opened and played Benny. I'd think more in range of $1200 here. Good luck.

How about just $35 per entry - the original price of the Benny?

Tonight when I get home from work...CST.

In Paypal, I can send out invoices requesting payment, right? So once I have all the names/entries I can just send invoices to those folks. Is this a good idea?

I thought the raffle idea would be fun. Understand that there will be up to 19 disappointed folks who did not win. But that's what a raffle is about, it's a gamble. In this case a 1 in 20 chance at a Benny.

Dude. Don't make it too complicated. Officially announce the raffle, take the 1st 20 entries (1 entry per person) via PMs, respond to the pm with PayPal address to submit $100 friends family not to mention anywhere about raffle, then draw the name. Don't mess with invoices and stuff. Some people may say they want in but then not send you the money promptly. If you want a ticket, buy it. Just do it. But pics would be good for those interested. Thanks for the OYR donation, at least I know Dave would thank you too. Very cool. Did I mention a finders fee Dave???

OP maybe trying to be massively inclusive by allowing more people to enter. This is pretty good right here. If I ever decided to part with my copy, I'd go this route.

I ran a raffle a few years ago. I also heard from multiple people about nightmares with PayPal, so no using of the word "raffle".

My biggest fear with the whole raffle thing was that people would somehow think it was rigged but from your description, I don't think anyone should be worried. My advice to you is just be clear and upfront about what you are doing every step of the way so that people entering can't poke holes in your process.

I would also suggest posting pictures of the Benny, or maybe sending it to people who are entering. Last thing you want is for the winner to be griping that the vinyl was not as described.

Finally, given some concerns here of late about buyer protection, I'm wondering if it's worth asking for payment instead of Friends & Family. However, it may be more trouble than it's worth because if you do get into a dispute with someone, you'd have to fess up to PayPal that you were running a raffle and then that could open up a can of worms.

Just my random thoughts. Good luck :)

Shoulda listened to myself and stayed out of it. $100 for a Benny is a great deal, but 19 people out $100 sucks, I'm glad some of the money is going to charity and it's being sold for a good cause.

But they're guaranteed to get the lighter. I don't think there is any reason to compare that.

    I agree. A sealed Benny is $1600.
I'm not trying to discourage you OP - it's your raffle and of course you should do what you want. But I'm shocked to know that anyone would pay $100 for one raffle ticket for an item that is worth $1200 at most. You usually see that kind of price when the prize is a house or something. I actually thought I read that wrong in the beginning of the thread and said something about how silly I was for thinking one ticket would be $100. But hey, if there really are people out there willing to pay that much for a 1 in 20 shot, great.
Also, it's very nice of you to think of charity while you're at it.
