A few things, then I'll gladly shut up and prepare for the lynch mob.

    1) I am sure that the artist is a wonderful woman. I am also sure that she has done some other stuff that is fabulous. Unfortunately, sometimes you hit one out of the park and sometimes you strikeout. It's art. You can't please everyone all the time and I am pretty sure that she knows this.

    2) At the time I posted this, I was not aware that not appreciating someone else's art was bullying. I have a fucking opinion, and I am pretty sure I am still entitled to it. I don't really like this particular work of art (even after having seen the photo that the painting is based on - I had never seen that photo before). I was not my intent to trash the work and/or make the artist feel like the lowest form of shit out there...sometimes talking about stuff like this helps me out (it did with the Don Pendleton prints that I originally did not like but now have an appreciation for, particularly Cincinnati). I thought I would see what others had to say about it - and plenty was said. That said, I don't judge you for having an opinion if it happens to differ from mine.

    3) After the comments from paulonious, I tweaked the title and original post, as I could see where I could have been a bit more tactful. I didn't do that for any other reason than I understood what the fuck he was saying. If anyone thinks that the first post is remotely close to bullying and/or being a harsh critic of one's work than I firmly think that you are a tad-bit hyper-sensitive. Bullying is a pretty strong word that gets tossed around all-too-frequently and I'm not sure it applies here.

    4) Frankly, I'd rather purchase the picture of Doug and Carrie Heffernan as it speaks to me and I get it (doesn't hurt that it still is one of my favorite shows). I (still) am not necessarily "feeling" the one of Eddie based on a picture that I have never seen until just a few moments ago...

No harm was intended...apologies for coming off that way initially.

    1) obviously the artist knows not everyone is going to like everything she does. doesn't mean it's open season.
    2) not appreciating and downright trashing are two completely different things.
    3) the word bully is somewhat of a buzzword of late, I'll give you that, but I used it and stand by it, for the reason that it seemed you weren't so much critiquing the work, but making fun of it and hoping for a like-minded response. that's the very definition. it's not hypersensitive. it's just WAY too easy to do something like that on the internet with little to no consequence.

again, no one is saying critiquing is bad. it's just all in how you say it. that is all.

I don't want to opine on the art either way, but when you try to monetize something, it leaves you open to more criticism vs. just posting.

    Oh Hobbes... =)

While I agree that tone sometimes supercedes words, I also can appreciate the OP re-thinking; I don't think s/he in any way intended to be an asshole, and certainly not bullying.

    ^^ Agreed.

For what it's worth, other than the way wonky wrist, I don't think that they did a bad job. It's pretty admirable, really. Have y'all ever tried to paint eyes? If you haven't, it is easier to have them look cross-eyed than both in the same direction.

  • I like it and would be proud to hang it in my home or office.... But to each their own... Ummm, believe it or not, not everyone loves Pearl Jam, but I'm really in to their art.

  • It is bullying and fucking stupid. It takes major guts to make and sell your art.

Are you saying that not liking someone's art is bullying or just the way that the OP went about it?
Is it bullying when someone says they don't like a Pearl Jam song?

    +1
Remember that the next time you criticize a Pearl Jam album, song, artwork or performance.

Everything is open for criticism - even more so when you post it for the world to see. You have to take the good with the bad. I like paintings of historical battles -preferably Naval battles (think Master and Commander) my best friend thinks these types of paintings are only suitable for seafood restaurant bathrooms... /shrug - doesn't keep me from thinking they are bad ass.

can you do better? I'm not an artist, but I'd never publicly criticize someone's work. that's low.

Maybe. Maybe not. Like you, I'm not an artist. However, like Hedonist said, if you put your work out there it is subject to both praise and criticism. That said, in my opinion, I was pretty far from harsh in my original post. Maybe I could have worded the thread title in a more respectful manner...but I didn't and thus opened myself to your public criticism of my post. Now, I am humiliated.

I will edit the title and initial post so as to present my question in a more respectful light.
Why even bother apologizing? You can't "criticize" someone's work with the clear intention of being mean about it and say "Sorry I'm being mean, but I'm going to be mean anyway."
Art criticism requires a bit more attention to detail than "WTF is this?"

Of course it is. But not everything is open for douchebaggery.

For whatever it is worth, Jay didn't mean it in a "douchebaggery" kind of way. He expressed an opinion (to note-- I didn't see the original thread title and post) but he truly feels bad. He changed the post title and his original comment. I've talked with him. No reason to keep kicking a guy.

    He goofed.

    He apologized.

I don't believe that he will be willing to wear an art critic hat in public ever again. I say we grant forum forgiveness and be on our way.
