Everything is open for criticism - even more so when you post it for the world to see. You have to take the good with the bad. I like paintings of historical battles -preferably Naval battles (think Master and Commander) my best friend thinks these types of paintings are only suitable for seafood restaurant bathrooms... /shrug - doesn't keep me from thinking they are bad ass.
can you do better? I'm not an artist, but I'd never publicly criticize someone's work. that's low.
Maybe. Maybe not. Like you, I'm not an artist. However, like Hedonist said, if you put your work out there it is subject to both praise and criticism. That said, in my opinion, I was pretty far from harsh in my original post. Maybe I could have worded the thread title in a more respectful manner...but I didn't and thus opened myself to your public criticism of my post. Now, I am humiliated.
I will edit the title and initial post so as to present my question in a more respectful light.
Why even bother apologizing? You can't "criticize" someone's work with the clear intention of being mean about it and say "Sorry I'm being mean, but I'm going to be mean anyway." Art criticism requires a bit more attention to detail than "WTF is this?"

Of course it is. But not everything is open for douchebaggery.

For whatever it is worth, Jay didn't mean it in a "douchebaggery" kind of way. He expressed an opinion (to note-- I didn't see the original thread title and post) but he truly feels bad. He changed the post title and his original comment. I've talked with him. No reason to keep kicking a guy.
He goofed.
He apologized.
I don't believe that he will be willing to wear an art critic hat in public ever again. I say we grant forum forgiveness and be on our way.

Jay shouldn't feel bad.
He made a statement, and then felt he needed to apologize. He acted like an ADULT when he apologized.
He shouldn't give 2 thoughts to the people here, who cant act like ADULTS, and except Jay's apology.
That is why I no longer apologize for anything I say here. Because everyone here is an "angel."

To those who choose to accept / understand my apology / explanation for my admitted egregious mistake, thanks...
To those who choose to keep beating a dead horse, have at it if it makes you feel better... The name-calling is really classy...in a bullying kind of way.
you apologized, and that's great. I'm just responding to those who keep saying what you originally said was ok in their eyes, which I disagree with and which even you acknowledged was not.
and I just think douchebaggery is a funny word.

You don't even need to apologize, in the same way I don't need to apologize for saying the Oakland 2013 poster is an ugly piece of poop. It was a semi-ok painting that semi-looks like Eddie Vedder (but not totally) and that's it. Who cares. I'm just waiting to see if Santos comes in to say that it was not an officially-licensed painting by Ten Club and not to buy it.

Most of the time, I would tend to agree that "douchebaggery" is an amusing word, however having been under the gun for 36 hours, give or take, my guard is up and...to be honest...I might be a bit "hyper-sensitive" to the situation.
Adult checking in here. Glad he apologized. My post was purely reactionary and based off a pronounced over sensitivity. I get like that some times. My wife says I'm experiencing 'man-o-pause'.

I like these. I am surprised that no one else comments on how they would be proud to own this and hang it one their wall for everyone to see! These are truly masterpieces and anyone who tells me otherwise is a bully trying to make my cry.

Looks like a set of Joseph Arthur paintings. He sells those for about $5000 a clip.
For what it's worth, I never called anyone a bully. I think I used the word "mean." The word choices used in the "critique" seemed to be directed at the artist, not the art. If the original poster had commented on the use of color, shape, form, style, tone, or anything else an art "critic" does, a reasonable discussion could have followed about the merits of the painting. Seeing that it's a copy of a photograph, I have to say it's not that bad of a copy and it took a lot of attention to detail to capture the texture of the photo.
From my perspective, the intent of the post was to poke fun. Then the half apology occurred. In life in general, I have a really hard time with people who say "Sorry if I offend you BUT . . ." People who include the BUT half of the sentence are not sorry. Truly sorry people change their behavior and just don't say what they are going to say. They don't precede their insulting comments with an acknowledgement that they are about to insult someone.
I appreciate the fact that people are ready to move on, and this is the last I will speak on this post.
