I dunno if I'd call it "playing it safe", but I think they've been going for the same vibe from show to show, for the most part, for the last several years.

Still great shows, I'm sure, but they make for less interesting tours as a whole.

I think generally the sets were more mixed up on the US '13 shows than recent years. The band openly admitted before Lightning Bolt was released that they felt the sets on the previous few tours were more playing it safe.

I think Ed and the guys do a great job with the sets - you have to get the right balance between hardcore, causal and new fans and also get the flow of the set right too. They certainly do that.

Why would they play Bushleaguer now?

It's not just Bushleaguer though. They don't play any of their politically driven covers anymore. Gimme Some Truth, Masters of War, No War, I Am a Patriot, etc. Personally, I think those songs are just as relevant now as they were ten years ago. Just because we aren't officially at war doesn't mean there are no injustices being carried out by our government.

I'm not sure I'd use the same words as the OP, but the shows are a bit more predictable, that is for sure. I think they are doing it for a reason though. They want to play polished and well executed shows. They are playing large venues and charging a lot of money. I think they care a bit more about the product than they used to. There is nothing wrong with that.

It has thrown a lot of us (me) for a loop though, because one of the reasons many of us like this band is that we just never know what is going to happen next. I appreciate polished nature of the 2013 shows, but I'd be lying if I said I didn't miss some of the more random moments from the 90's tours, 2000 and 2003.

    All things change.

I saw 5 shows this tour and saw absolutely nothing missing from the setlists compared to previous tours where I saw multiple shows. They averaged 30 songs a show and I saw some songs that I had only seen once or twice (if ever) in 37 previous shows like All Those Yesterdays, Fatal, Other Side and Alone.

This is non sense. Setlists are so varied its not even funny. I witnessed Release and Oceans in one show. Only predictable part is the last 3 songs. That's it.

Set-to-set structure has definitely become more predictable. However, with the exception of about 10 songs this tour, the set contents were much less predictable than any tour in recent memory (though jumping from roughly 28 songs per show to 33 certainly helped). Lots of tour stops had songs that didn't appear at any other show. It was a pretty good year to see multiple shows.

okay maybe a little bit, but if you took San Diego and Spokane, you would probably get the same type of variance

Not in the slightest. Who would have predicted the formula for last year's tour? They made a better overall structure to the shows which I guess picky people will call them being predictable but my making it this way they're producing something for everyone at a really high standard and into the bargain started doing 3 hours or more every show. In addition to that they are dropping in songs that we just wouldn't normally expect or are unusually placed just for the surprise element and seemingly paying attention to more requests which adds something more unique. I don't think they are playing it safe any more than they did on any tour since they started releasing all the shows. I have listened to 90% of the shows since then and there's always surprises. The favourites are there to stay and they will always plug the new release until they tire of it. Funnily enough despite the collective age of the guys the energy and vibe at the shows is at a level unseen in a long time too and there's a hell of a lot of new fans every year. If you are feeling short changed by PJ shows then you must be very hard to satisfy and do we really need to hear so many covers politically charged or not?

I think the setlists are varied more than any other band I can think of.

I did a quick count the other day and I think that of the 127 songs from the 10 studio albums, 109 where played during the us leg of the 2013 tour. I think this is incredible. Obviously to add in the lost dogs stuff, other rarities and covers gives even more variation and considering some of the other throw away tracks on vitalogy/riot act etc are unlikely to be played live.

No - Ed demonstrated a rather masterful job this past tour mixing up the set lists and changing them up from most recent years. I think they as a band went into the tour with a focus to challenge themselves to raise the bar on this tour in terms of set lists. Plus most all of the shows on this tour were pushing close to 3 hours.

A completely new diverse, mixed set to appease hardcore/casual/news fans each night while pushing close to a 3 hour show is one of the largest reasons why they're the best professional live band in the business.
