Hartford 2013
Gorgeous version of pendulum opens. Long road sounds pretty tight and transitions perfectly into sometimes. These 3 openers all are quality versions making this the best opening of a show yet in 2013 tour (it's the 9th show in). That's nothing to be taken lightly and a high praise for this boot. Keeping with the good flow is corduroy and lightning bolt to up the tempo. At this point in the boot you can tell, this baby is mixed well. It's bright, crisp, and just sounds so good. I could use more body to the guitars, but they still have good crunch. Matts snare has an incredibly bright pop with just the right overtone and punch. Ed sounds slightly raspy towards end of LB but not in a bad way really and mikes solo is wonderful too. MYM has gotten tighter at this point in the tour and doesn't sound like the disaster it did the first few gigs. Last exit is much better here than Brooklyn 2, it's tour debut. No timing issues and Ed sounds comfortable with the song. Ed acknowledges how loud and receptive the crowd is. Immortality drops the tempo but not the quality of performance. It fits in well to provide dynamics to flow of the show. Here it sounds a little heavier than usual, a good thing in my book. This is caused by matts half open high hats before the first solo and a more driving drum rhythm than usual. Ed almost messes up the second verse in even flow but covers it up very well. It's quick and not very noticeable. On the other hand, matts mini drum solo is noticeable and puts a smile on my face. Ed shows what a humble frontman he is by stating that such a great crowd like this one can make a "shitty" band like them sound good. Alone is a rare treat and may be the best version I have heard. Having Ed sing the very end of alone like the studio version, by himself, transitions nicely into unthought known. On a similar note, the ending of unthought works well to enter immediately into the opening of records play, which is a solid version with a good jam at the end. To be clear, this show flows like a well oiled machine. Save you is a little rusty but not what I would call a bad version. A few small timing issues and brief incorrect lyrics, but the extended outro is energetic. Save you into DTE really rocks with a "fuckin South America" crowd singing loud. Better man ends this simply amazing main set, easily the best one up to this point in the tour. Worthy of a bravo to the band and the crowd!
Very nice to hear this coming from you my friend - sounds like Hartford 2013 is a stellar boot. Since the day of the show and hearing so much about the energy of the crowd and band collectively, and a nice looking set, has made me want to hear this boot of the first leg of the 2013 tour maybe more so any other shows. Now it's really killing me having to wait for my 2013 tour boot box set even more. Very anxious to see the remainder of your review with the encores.Bristow, VA - 5.13.10

Can someone recommend a 2012 Euro or South American boot where the crowd sings the guitar parts? I can't remember exactly when/where it started but I've heard it on PJRadio and I think it's so awesome.

It's quick and not very noticeable. On the other hand, Matt’s mini drum solo is noticeable and spices up the song. Ed shows what a humble front man he is by stating that such a great crowd like this one can make a "shitty" band like them sound good. Alone is a rare treat and may be the best version I have heard. Having Ed sing the very end of Alone like the studio version, by himself, transitions nicely into Unthought Known. Better Man ends this simply amazing main set, easily the best one up to this point in the tour. Bravo to the band and the crowd!
Yellow Moon opens encore 1 which is just an incredible live song all around. Come Back is more convincing than usual; Ed's vocals are some of the best I've heard. Before Future Days Ed gives a humorous speech about what the song is about. Only he can do it justice, but it's about spending time with your fucking partner or fucking your partner. Also it applies to parenting. Future Days is an ok version, it was excellent until the end where Ed just messes up lyrically a very little bit. Boom and Matt get off time with the intro to Chloe Dancer, but I doubt many will pick up on it. Transition into Crown of Thorns is perfection, as is the song (the bridge sounds a little too quiet but nothing to frown upon). Eruption right into Ain’t Talkin ‘Bout Love puts a big smile on my face. One time only, not quite, but only in Hartford it seems. You can tell the band was having a lot of fun and it actually sounds pretty good overall. While Boom plays gently in the background for Wasted Reprise Ed gives what is undoubtedly his most profound speech in the tour concerning gun control and the freedom to speak about it publically. The crowd is mostly receptive to what Ed is saying; I didn’t hear many booing at all. I appreciate his comments and mostly agree with what he presents here. Life Wasted is one of the liveliest sounding takes I have heard in a while. It is not perfect though. Ed once again just slightly messes up the second verse, but not by much and sounds a little thin vocally. Porch closes the first encore which is not as good as the main set but still far above average in terms of performance, setlist, emotion, and energy level.
Encore 2 starts with Small Town, which is nice getting it out of the main set, and is played to the back of the stage for folks there. The solos and interplay between Boom and Mike towards the end of Crazy Mary doesn’t get any better than what’s given here. Simply incredible. Go serves to get the crowd rocking again towards the shows conclusion, Ed’s voice is starting to weaken at this point though, but the music is spot on. Fuckin Up makes its first appearance since Calgary 2011. Stone’s solos are invigorating. Overall, a respectable rendition of the Uncle Neil cover. As Indifference closes this magnificent show Ed compliments the crowd again on how amazing they have been. You can tell he absolutely loved the crowd that evening; he wasn’t just trying to rally them.
As lengthy as this review may be, it still does not do this bootleg justice. Philly 2 was a turnaround show in my opinion for the 2013 tour, which had shows up to that point that were ranging from just really good to below average. Nothing spectacular. While Philly 2 was the first great show of 2013, Hartford has replaced it easily as the best of the first 9 shows of the 2013 tour, and will be a force to be reckoned with for the remainder of the tour. I doubt it will leave my top 3 for this tour as a whole. If you only buy one of the first 9 shows of 2013, buy this one. It is by far the best imo, not to take away from the other shows that were good, but this one is another kind of beast.
2013 is really growing on me now. Between the length of these shows, the setlists, and some of the recent performances it is turning around for the best.2008: Bonnaroo

:thumbup:Really enjoyed reading your review of what was the best PJ show I have ever been to. It was a night I will never forget. The crowd was on another planet, singing along to just about every song. This version of "Long Road" was the most emotional version, to me, next to Virginia Beach 2000. I had a feeling the band would play it for Newtown. First time I heard it I had chills when the music reached its climax right before the final "I have wished for so long..." and hearing Ed do that scream(?) and had chills again listening to the boot. I think this version will always give me chills whenever I listen to it. That's the power of Eddie and the band. "Come Back" was another one that gave me chills and started to make my eyes tear up a bit.
I don't know what this band did from when I saw them in 2010 and the 2 shows this year, but these shows have a Springsteen-like quality to them. The shows were some of the most amazing things I have witnessed and the Hartford show was something I have a hard time describing to people how incredible it was. I am happy to say the boot has done the crowd justice on DTE and Better Man; incredible to hear how loud we really were during those two songs. When Ed greeted the crowd after "Last Exit," the band were taken aback by the reception of the crowd. And one more comment about the crowd on the boot: I wish the crowd was turned up just a bit more on "Alive" to really hear and understand why Ed said it "fucking unbelievable!" Like he said before Indifference, the crowd that night certainly was not normal.Shows: 6.27.08 Hartford, CT/5.15.10 Hartford, CT/6.18.2011 Hartford, CT (EV Solo)/10.19.13 Brooklyn/10.25.13 Hartford

Amsterdam 1 2012
This show is all about certain "segments" in the set and I really enjoy this boot. The first 5 songs of the set couldn't be more profound to set the table for the rest of the show and is where the first "segment" begins. One of my personal favorites and is always great way to start a show is the lethal combination of Interstellar Overdrive > Corduroy to open. I've always felt Corduroy is a monster opener and rarely starts things off anymore, but this killer tandem takes us back to the 2000 tour and it's just great. Immediately after Corduroy we shift right into a punching version of Why Go, and the transition is absolutely sublime. On Why Go, we receive an extended drum solo, which may have been a bass guitar issue from Jeff initially, but it really works well. Matt's drums sound punchy as hell and crisp, and we hear some crunchy guitar bites on this mix. The energy continues to build up with Given To Fly and then Brain Of J, which makes its only appearance during the 2012 tour. I always put a significant amount of emphasis on the opening 5 songs to determine how a show will sound, the vibe, the mood, and what Ed's master mind is feeling for the show - and I just love the way this show starts off and it's obvious they wanted to come out guns blazing for this gig. Although Ed does sound a tad shrieky in the first 5 songs, he clears it up and sounds strong. After Brain Of J, we get our next "segment" in the middle of the set and it's a nice slow breakdown consisted of Amongst The Waves, which sounds very warm, and Elderly Woman into In Hiding. Before Elderly Woman, E first addresses the crowd with what sounds like butchered Dutch and the transition from Elderly Woman into In Hiding is fantastic. The "slow" breakdown then gets back into up-tempo mode next with Even Flow and World Wide Suicide. Things continue to stay up as we transition into our next "segment" and superb transition with heavy guitar work with Rats > Lukin > Not For You. We get very rich and heavy guitar work on the aforementioned sequence and I'm not even the biggest fan of those songs, but they hit heavy. We then receive another slower and beautiful "segment" with an excellent performance and inspiring version of Better Things into a warm-fuzzy performance of Nothingman. Average performances of The Fixer and DTE close out the main set.
The only proverbial "weaker" part of this boot/show consists of the 1st encore IMO. It starts off with Last Kiss and they fuck up the intro and have to start over immediately. They then play Just Breathe and then bring things back up wit Comatose into building performances of Unthought Known and Porch to close out the main set. I feel they do try and recover with the last two songs of the first encore, but I thought the entire encore was the most weak of the entire show, which by PJ standards, is still killer.
The second encore beings our next "segment" with the song requests and they play two song requests from people in the crowd right off the bat opening with one of my personal all-time favorite PJ songs Smile and then Green Disease. Both strong performances. Next are quite strong performances of crowd pleasers Love Reign O'er Me and Black with a nice extended outro from the crowd. RITFW and Indifference close the first night in 2012 in Amsterdam out.
I absolutely love the way that this set list flows and it just has as an organic flow to it and it seems like each song transitions very well into the next. It seems the entire set has the minor "segments" in it that feature songs in it that when played together, accent each other nicely. I hate to sound like a broken record, but it's another very tight performance from the band (which is another day at the office for PJ) for 2012. Ed isn't quite as chatty on this night, but in a good mood. The overall mix is solid, with a lot of body and crunch coming from the guitars, and while Matt's drums aren't the most crisp sounding on this mix, they are still punchy and do sound crisp all together. No extraordinary crowd energy or anything, but the flow for this show is no nice in my opinion, and it's just a solid, fun show and an above average boot.Bristow, VA - 5.13.10

Your review made me buy the bootleg last night. Your enthousiasm and the way you discribed it made me want to check it out. You and it didn't let me down.
What you said about Alone, Crazy Mary, Chloe dancer/Crown of thorns, Long road, Pendulum and Last exit is spot on.
Although Mind your manners is better in comparison with the two Worchester version I have it still isn't perfect.0
