fun night. can't wait for tomorrow!
I thought I heard It's Okay, too. Disappointed that they stopped. I also loved hearing Ed say that if TP were his dad, his name would be Eddie Petty, and how he'd get over it living in his nice house, etc.0 -
I was there and I have to say I'm a little bummed. I was lucky enough to be in town on business and got to attend the show. All I can say is that I'm glad I have tickets in LA when PJ headlines.
It's been sometime since PJ was the warm-up. They weren't given the benefit of the same lighting and video screens as the Heartbreakers. (As it turned out, Petty's folks seemed to be struggling with the video anyway and by the middle of the show, the screens were dark.) The audio at the start of the show was choppy but clearer as the show progressed.
The set was great; the band had lots of energy and clearly delighted in the fact that they were there, along with the others, to pay respects to Petty's long career. It may be my Pearl Jam bias, but I thought the place was stacked in Pearl Jam's favor. The chorus of voices during "Betterman" lifted the roof. Thousands of arms were raised in a "v".
Vedder paid tribute to Warren Buffet ("not Jimmy Buffet") and the billions he gave away this week. Ed Ved called it "sexy" when rich people give.
Eddie came out and did a rousing "American Girl", taking the lead vocal from Petty and then improving it. Vedder looked genuinely happy to share the stage.
It was great to see them again. It had been a long road since Santa Barbara. In two weeks, LA hosts and we'll get what we're accustomed to.
A longer, soaring show.Arms raised in a V:

I'm not sure if I can put up with Petty two nights in a row, he was rather boring tonight, seemed liked most of his songs were slowed down and then extended, which was not a good combo IMO. I saw him last summer and he played basically the same stuff and he had the exact same moves, do we really need to see him shake his ass at the crowd all night long?
PJ were awesome however, it was mainly a hits set but rocked alot harder than Petty's hits set. I really wish they were playing the Twin Cities on their own, people booed when they finished since the set was so short.0 -
One more thing...I could barely hear Mike's guitar from where I was. They need to crank that up.0

I agree. I got to Xcel early and one of the radio stations actually handed out Petty's setlist. It was taken from the Charlotte, NC show on 6/9, but it was nearly identical--how boring! I think he changed two songs, and skipped two. I hope he at least changes the order around for tomorrow.0 -
i hope someone got a good recording of american girl
ed more than made up for the birdman incident imo0 -
Worst PJ show I've ever been to. However, that's more due to the short setlist when we were told again and again it would be much more than actual setlist or concert goings on (which I've already ranted about in other threads so I'll leave it at that). The Eddie Petty comment was funny. Also thought it was HILARIOUS when Ed started talking about who they were playing with then pretended to "check" his guitar for a cheatsheet for the other band name. Don't know who all caught that but I was cracking up at Ed's humor on that one.
Don't know how anybody could say the PJ fanbase was louder. The crowd was 3X as loud for Petty, hands down. But, as somebody else already mentioned, it was also like listening to a greatest hits album when he was onstage. Except Petty threw in some Michael Jackson dances in every song, which got old for me oh, about the first time it happened. And then there were more in the next song. And the next. And the next. You get the picture.
Didn't like this concert at all though. I realize Petty is a legend, but it's embarassing as a fan for a band like PJ to play the opening band role and then hear the crowd louder for Petty than PJ. And watch people next to me side-stage 2nd row sit during Comatose.I always finish what I sta0 -
I was of the impression that the crowd was definitely Pearl Jam leaning, 60-40, maybe even 70-30. There were more singalongs with Petty, but 90 percent of his set was radio hits, so that's to be expected. People seemed to be way more into PJ. The point someone made earlier, about booing after the lights came on after their set, points to that also. Anyway, to the show itself. Overall, I thought the guys were great tonight. It was my third show, and it seems that the band has gotten more and more intense with each show. Mike is such a great performer. It's nice to see him looking so healthy and happy, after dealing with the health issues and weight problems in recent years. It's great to see him fit and trim and all over the stage. It was nice to hear Sleight of Hand again, my favorite song off Binaural, which I've been fortunate enough to hear at two of the three shows I've been too. The new songs are great, of course. I'm hoping against hope to get Inside Job tomorrow night. Petty was OK, nothing that made you go wow. The definite highlight of the Petty set was Oh Well, which I had no idea was part of their repertoire. I've heard four different bands peform live versions of that song (Gov't Mule, Jimmy Page and the Black Crowes, Mike Gordon and Leo Kottke, and now Petty and the Heartbreakers) and I've yet to hear a version I didn't love. It was nice to be there tonight, as a casual fan, and be treated to a lot of good, familiar songs. Having said that, after reading what I have about Petty's setlists, I'm not looking forward to his set tomorrow. It's fun to hear Mary Jane's Last Dance, American Girl, Refugee, Learning to Fly, Free Fallin', etc, but I'm not excited to hear all the same songs again tomorrow. For a guy with a catalog of around 150 songs, you'd think he might mix it up some more, rather than playing 80 percent of the same set every night, with a few different songs mixed in. Of course people want to hear the hits. I want to hear the hits, but play half of them tonight, half of them tomorrow night, repeat a few songs if you need to, but give us some variety. Hopefully we'll at least get a few changes tomorrow night and there's always a chance of some type of collaboration.Fargo 2003

Last night was my first Pearl Jam concert. I will never forget the incredible goosebumps that I had all over my body during Given To Fly. It was like having an all over the body orgasm. I will spend the rest of my life trying to have that feeling again. Pearl Jam is my heroin.0

I'm going to agree with most of the people on this thread, it was a great show, but way to short of a pearl jam set. With that said pj was totally into their preformance. THey were rockin. A lot of crowd energy, noise, and love was directed at Pearl Jam. Eddie mentioned that tonight was an "experiment" and their hypothesis held true (something like that). It seemed louder for petty, but that is because everyone knows his songs and he made gestures and encouraged the crowd to cheer for him.
Highlights:
Loved hearing the new songs for the first time.
Opening with Last Exit
Eddie switching from tea to wine
Drum solo
Booing b/c Pearl Jam's set was too short
Watching a guy with a Vedder 27 Chicago Jersey cause havoc for security During Petty's set (anyone know the story with this one?)
After Petty's first set, before the encore there were lots of chants for Eddie, not Petty
Eddie on American girl

I'll start with my post from another forum:tonyfro wrote:1. Awesome seats, 6th row center. 111xxx.
2. Awesome music from PJ.
3. Set too short. Yes, I knew it wouldn't be 140 minutes with two encores, etc. It would have been nice though after the set that they did play to come out and rip Yellow Ledbetter or Porch or Black or maybe even a 2 song encore. Also, I personally don't like Sleight of Hand in concert mode, I think if they're keeping it short, then keep it rockin!
4. AN HOUR TO CHANGE SETS!!!! They looked like they were done in about 30 minutes, but an hour between sets. Major buzz kill.
5. I know Petty fans are probably, on average, a little older than PJ fans, but the "excitement level" was much lower. I know you don't jump around to American Girl like Animal, but there was a lot of standing around during the second half. My father-in-law is an anesthesiologist and had to work this morning, so we left just before 11, didn't catch the end, but I wasn't impressed with Tom Petty.
Just my two cents.

The guy in the Vedder jersey was just an ass. Having fun and dancing and maybe bumping into the person next to you once or twice I understand, but this guy and his girl were so wasted they were all over the place. Security told their neighbors during the break that if they were causing trouble during Petty to let them know and they would get them out of there. I really enjoyed him flipping everyone off, including Tom Petty.
I still had a good time, I look forward to seeing Dan from Cottage Grove and hopefully the pretty gal on the other side of me again tonight.

My wife and I left after PJ. Too tired to stay last night, work today, and go again tonight. We'll be staying all night to night though.
PJ was awesome, though I felt it was a very common set, nothing really outstanding song wise. Though the performace was hot and I can't remember the last time (or if ever) that I've heard "Why Go" live so that was cool.
TC # is 192,xxx we were in Sec. 102, Row 4, Seats 15 & 16. They were okay seats, about twelves rows back from the stage if you counted from the beginning of the floor seats. At that height we were even with the stage so for the first time in 7 shows my short wife finally could see the entire thing.Kansas City 98

More on the Vedder jersey guy...
We saw him at McGovern's before hand and was clearly wasted. His lips were all red from drinking wine and was singing as if holding onto a microphone stand on the patio. For a while, no one was around him, but then a girl came and gave him yet ANOTHER glass of wine. This was aroud 6:00. Then we saw then get kicked out.
Lo and behold, halfway through the PJ set, here they come, into the second row, two seats down from me. They just wreaked havoc on the petty fans in front of us. They could hardly stand up. I didn't think they'd come back from the break, but they did, drunker than ever. As a previous poster said, were escorted out, but not before the girl tried to fight me. Classic.
I'm not against people being drunk at shows, but this was definitely one of those, drunk people ruined my experience thing. You could tell there was just a void in our section and the musicians were aware of it too. We're still making records for people who listen to it all the way through, eyes closed, in that space.0 -

My 2cents,
I happened to walk in and pick up my tickets just as the soundcheck was starting, so I got to hear a longer performance than many others. But, like many others, I thought the PJ performance was too short. The only good thing about the short set was the energy given out by the band, It seemed very intense to me, probably because they know its only going to be half as long.
The Petty performance was ok, I was sort of hoping to hear some newer stuff, but having a 2 hour singalong was fun as well. But I do think the PJ fans outnumbered the TP fans at least where I was sitting on the floor.
Time to rest up and do it all(including Petty's setlist) again tonight.0 -

I picked up my tickets around 5:00, and caught most of the soundcheck. They were playing Bushleauger when I arrived, so I was quite excited they might play it one of the 2 nights. Also, hearing "It's Okay" gave me the chills... I wish the would've played it during the show. It really did sound like Jeff was trying to work into it during Daughter, but Eddie seemed to cut him off.
Also, during soundcheck... it was unbelievable to hear Soldier of Love... what a great tune. I hope to God they play it tonight.
I'm quite glad I heard the soundcheck... it made my Pearl Jam experience that much longer.
See you all tonight again.0
