Last night was my first Pearl Jam concert. I will never forget the incredible goosebumps that I had all over my body during Given To Fly. It was like having an all over the body orgasm. I will spend the rest of my life trying to have that feeling again. Pearl Jam is my heroin.
I'm going to agree with most of the people on this thread, it was a great show, but way to short of a pearl jam set. With that said pj was totally into their preformance. THey were rockin. A lot of crowd energy, noise, and love was directed at Pearl Jam. Eddie mentioned that tonight was an "experiment" and their hypothesis held true (something like that). It seemed louder for petty, but that is because everyone knows his songs and he made gestures and encouraged the crowd to cheer for him.
Highlights:
Loved hearing the new songs for the first time.
Opening with Last Exit
Eddie switching from tea to wine
Drum solo
Booing b/c Pearl Jam's set was too short
Watching a guy with a Vedder 27 Chicago Jersey cause havoc for security During Petty's set (anyone know the story with this one?)

1. Awesome seats, 6th row center. 111xxx.
2. Awesome music from PJ.
3. Set too short. Yes, I knew it wouldn't be 140 minutes with two encores, etc. It would have been nice though after the set that they did play to come out and rip Yellow Ledbetter or Porch or Black or maybe even a 2 song encore. Also, I personally don't like Sleight of Hand in concert mode, I think if they're keeping it short, then keep it rockin!
4. AN HOUR TO CHANGE SETS!!!! They looked like they were done in about 30 minutes, but an hour between sets. Major buzz kill.
5. I know Petty fans are probably, on average, a little older than PJ fans, but the "excitement level" was much lower. I know you don't jump around to American Girl like Animal, but there was a lot of standing around during the second half. My father-in-law is an anesthesiologist and had to work this morning, so we left just before 11, didn't catch the end, but I wasn't impressed with Tom Petty.
Just my two cents.

The guy in the Vedder jersey was just an ass. Having fun and dancing and maybe bumping into the person next to you once or twice I understand, but this guy and his girl were so wasted they were all over the place. Security told their neighbors during the break that if they were causing trouble during Petty to let them know and they would get them out of there. I really enjoyed him flipping everyone off, including Tom Petty.
I still had a good time, I look forward to seeing Dan from Cottage Grove and hopefully the pretty gal on the other side of me again tonight.
My wife and I left after PJ. Too tired to stay last night, work today, and go again tonight. We'll be staying all night to night though.
PJ was awesome, though I felt it was a very common set, nothing really outstanding song wise. Though the performace was hot and I can't remember the last time (or if ever) that I've heard "Why Go" live so that was cool.
TC # is 192,xxx we were in Sec. 102, Row 4, Seats 15 & 16. They were okay seats, about twelves rows back from the stage if you counted from the beginning of the floor seats. At that height we were even with the stage so for the first time in 7 shows my short wife finally could see the entire thing.

More on the Vedder jersey guy...
We saw him at McGovern's before hand and was clearly wasted. His lips were all red from drinking wine and was singing as if holding onto a microphone stand on the patio. For a while, no one was around him, but then a girl came and gave him yet ANOTHER glass of wine. This was aroud 6:00. Then we saw then get kicked out.
Lo and behold, halfway through the PJ set, here they come, into the second row, two seats down from me. They just wreaked havoc on the petty fans in front of us. They could hardly stand up. I didn't think they'd come back from the break, but they did, drunker than ever. As a previous poster said, were escorted out, but not before the girl tried to fight me. Classic.
I'm not against people being drunk at shows, but this was definitely one of those, drunk people ruined my experience thing. You could tell there was just a void in our section and the musicians were aware of it too.
We're still making records for people who listen to it all the way through, eyes closed, in that space.
I happened to walk in and pick up my tickets just as the soundcheck was starting, so I got to hear a longer performance than many others. But, like many others, I thought the PJ performance was too short. The only good thing about the short set was the energy given out by the band, It seemed very intense to me, probably because they know its only going to be half as long.
The Petty performance was ok, I was sort of hoping to hear some newer stuff, but having a 2 hour singalong was fun as well. But I do think the PJ fans outnumbered the TP fans at least where I was sitting on the floor.
Time to rest up and do it all(including Petty's setlist) again tonight.
What time did the PJ sound check begin? Since the set is so damn short, i am hoping to catch all that i can of the real "Headliner"

I picked up my tickets around 5:00, and caught most of the soundcheck. They were playing Bushleauger when I arrived, so I was quite excited they might play it one of the 2 nights. Also, hearing "It's Okay" gave me the chills... I wish the would've played it during the show. It really did sound like Jeff was trying to work into it during Daughter, but Eddie seemed to cut him off.
Also, during soundcheck... it was unbelievable to hear Soldier of Love... what a great tune. I hope to God they play it tonight.
I'm quite glad I heard the soundcheck... it made my Pearl Jam experience that much longer.
I was there and I have to say I'm a little bummed. I was lucky enough to be in town on business and got to attend the show. All I can say is that I'm glad I have tickets in LA when PJ headlines.
It's been sometime since PJ was the warm-up. They weren't given the benefit of the same lighting and video screens as the Heartbreakers. (As it turned out, Petty's folks seemed to be struggling with the video anyway and by the middle of the show, the screens were dark.) The audio at the start of the show was choppy but clearer as the show progressed.
The set was great; the band had lots of energy and clearly delighted in the fact that they were there, along with the others, to pay respects to Petty's long career. It may be my Pearl Jam bias, but I thought the place was stacked in Pearl Jam's favor. The chorus of voices during "Betterman" lifted the roof. Thousands of arms were raised in a "v".
Vedder paid tribute to Warren Buffet ("not Jimmy Buffet") and the billions he gave away this week. Ed Ved called it "sexy" when rich people give.
Eddie came out and did a rousing "American Girl", taking the lead vocal from Petty and then improving it. Vedder looked genuinely happy to share the stage.
It was great to see them again. It had been a long road since Santa Barbara. In two weeks, LA hosts and we'll get what we're accustomed to.
A longer, soaring show.
actually, they were warm up in september, i was there!!! i'm glad petty people are bitching for people to sit down, i'd be pissed!!! it happened to me with the rolling stones.

Last night was my first show since the riot act tour and i was pleased. Last exit was a great opener. I also though I was about to be rocked by Its Ok but maybe that will be for tonight. Although with such a short set list I would rather hear another song besides daughter and scrap that awsome tag, but we will see what happens. It would be the highlight of the show for me if it was played.
Long story short PJ rocked and Petty was weak sauce. All of the guitar solos seemed to be during parts of the songs when they had slowed them down. The highlights of the petty set for me where "last dance with mary jane" and " you don't know how it feels". Basicaly because they both start with a harmonica and I think we all know how much a harmonica can rock.
For the name of pettys tour they may have considered " Tom Petty plays his hits while people around you grind on their drunk girlfriends with short skirts" or " Petty and the greatests hits quartet wave to the crowd yet again to get a loud applause instead of just rocking the applause out of you."
Cant wait to see the show tonight. PJ should be great. Maybe It's Ok! I hope so.
My experience at last nights show was a good one. Again my YEAR has been made by the fact that I witnessed another steller preformance from 6th row of my favorite band OF ALL TIME. The sheer experience of seeing fellow FC members I have seen for countless years and the sure power of all of us singing the first verse of Betterman without a single lyric sang by ED is unmatched by ANY modern band. This is why I go to see them. The community that surrounds this band was experienced by the TP fans last night and will continue TONIGHT! You can be upset by the set list or length of show but in the end does it really matter? Quality begets quantity anyday.
Thank you PJ and all the die hards no matter what year you first saw them play. SEE YOU TONIGHT!

they honestl yplayed about the same length. pearl jam took the stage at 730 and played about 90 minutes as said, petty didnt go on till about 10 or so and played till a little after 1130....
no joke. Checked my phone.
pearl jam has something special, petty has lots of number one hits.
nd fuck the people that say this was a bad pearl jam show. i couldnt of even handled a full pearl jam show. They rocked so fucking hard. That was one of the most intense alives ive ever seen. 25 plus shows now, i am pissed at them for rocking so hard. I couldnt rock to comatose cause i was so tired, assholes.
And i hate when they close with rocking...but that was tone of the most intense versions ive been apart of. and sleight of hand is gorgeous.
Petty, fine. He has great songs, no doubt. he is also part of the rock n roll fabric...but nothing special. I will stick around because i would hate it if petty fans come and go, and its worth seeing ed sing with them...
I thought the Pearl Jam set rocked! Mike was on fire! I was actually surprised that they slowed it down for a couple songs (Daughter; Given to Fly). I was hoping to hear Marker in the Sand...I expect it will be in the mix for tonight's show. I agree with others that the set was too short. It was also rather strange to not have Pearl Jam doing an encore at the end of their set.
As for Petty, I have to say that I got kind of bored as his set progressed. Good thing they were still selling beer. I like his music and know all his songs but I guess I expected something more. I could have done without the Benmont Tench keyboard solo and Tom's tail wagging dance.
Overall, it was an enjoyable evening. Looking forward to tonight's show and expecting PJ to rock my socks of once again.
Review: Petty didn't back down to Pearl Jam
CONCERT REVIEW:Tom Petty played to a lot of Eddie Vedder lovers at Xcel Center, but it was still a love fest.
Chris Riemenschneider, Star Tribune
It's the most anticipated Twin Cities rock event of the summer, and Xcel Energy Center's biggest cross-generational bill since the Rock for Change concert in 2004. Even though the first of two shows Monday by Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers and Pearl Jam didn't come off as anything all that historic, it did make a great two-fer package.
For the price of a typical single-headliner arena gig -- but a bit more than these famously fan-friendly acts usually charge -- the 16,000 attendees saw full sets by two staples of American FM rock radio. Each delivered on the hits, too: "Free Fallin',"Refugee,"I Won't Back Down" and "American Girl" in Petty's case; "Alive,"Jeremy,"Daughter,"Better Man" and "Even Flow" from Pearl Jam.
The younger veterans actually drew a rowdier response than Petty and company, who lined up the '90s rockers for six shows to commemorate their 30th anniversary. But most of the crowd was too busy singing along to all the hits to keep score.
Pearl Jam's 85-minute set kicked off with five of its grungiest and feistiest album cuts, including "Last Exit,"Life Wasted" and "Evolution." But as the Seattle quintet turned more anthemic with "Given to Fly," it quickly became obvious that Monday's sellout crowd was made up of more of its fans. The concertgoers even knew the words to the band's newest songs.
As on much of Pearl Jam's current self-titled CD, frontman Eddie Vedder skewered Republican leaders in "World Wide Suicide." However, he made safer comments between songs, perhaps out of deference to the typically apolitical Petty. He dedicated "Army Reserve" to the soldiers "dealing with an intense situation" in Iraq and -- curiously -- sent the finale of "Rockin' in the Free World" to billionaire philanthropist Warren Buffett.
Vedder repeatedly showed his appreciation for Petty, too, and even sang a few bars of "I Won't Back Down."
"We have a group of fans who travel around the country to see us," he said. "Now we're gonna be doing that for a couple weeks -- traveling around to see Tom Petty."
As it turned out, the Rock Hall of Famer, 55, had no problem getting the younger crowd on his side. Basically, anyone with a car stereo knows his songs, a point proven by the opening tunes, "Listen to Her Heart" and "You Don't Know How It Feels."
His set was better than a predictable hits package, though. He previewed a few songs from his upcoming CD, "Highway Companion," including "Saving Grace," which had a Bo Diddley boogie. That was followed by an actual Diddley tune, "I'm a Man," plus a gritty version of the early Fleetwood Mac nugget "Oh Well."
"You lucky people have a genuine, all-American rock show tonight," Petty boasted -- and that was well before he brought Vedder back onstage to sing "American Girl" with him and the Heartbreakers.
Hope all who were in attendance enjoyed the show. Just looking at Petty's set and noticed that the first 4-5 songs and the end of the show from "Don't Come Around Here No More" on were EXACTLY the same as Petty's set at every show last year on his tour with The Black Crowes, which I happened to catch in Mansfield, MA last summer. So, if anyone is hitting more than one show on this Pearl Jam/Petty tour and expecting Petty's set to change from night to night, it's not gonna happen. Maybe 1-2 songs will change in the middle of the set but that's it. The majority of the people coming to his shows come to hear his greatest hits and that's what he delivers.
Personally, I thought Petty's show was VERY weak last year when I saw him and I like Petty's music (although I was really there for the Crowes). I know he's older now but to me he just came across as a very old and tired performer on stage like he was just mailing it in. I thought the Crowes blew him off the stage although their set was about an hour long. I can only imagine what Petty must have felt like after a rockin' set by Pearl Jam. For me, it would have been a snooze fest.
they honestl yplayed about the same length. pearl jam took the stage at 730 and played about 90 minutes as said, petty didnt go on till about 10 or so and played till a little after 1130....

No way. PJ was 7:30 until about 8:50. 80 Minutes. Tom Petty was 9:50 (yes a one hour set up) until about 11:40 or 11:45. 110 to 115 minutes.
Did tickets go smoothly?I heard the problems they had when they went on sale. Was your name on your envelope?
This was my first show, but I was amazed at how convenient the tix were. There was no line. I handed them my drivers license and 5 seconds later had 2 tickets in my hand.
As for the Show. Pearl Jam rocked. Their set went by sooooooooo fast, it felt like about 30 minutes, but they packed a lot of sweet shit in there. I really missed having any of the encore typed songs in there.
Matt's drum solo in evenflow was nuts. RITFW was AMAZING, and the rest was excellent.........
then there was Petty.....
He was much better than I expected, but damn his set did seem to drag on. It was killing me waiting to see any of the PJ members again, so it was really great to see Ed with them, even, if you couldn't hear shit. I actually sat through some of Petty, since I was tired. Also, it was loud as hell, so it got a bit painful if you weren't super into the music.
btw, don't know if any of you saw us, but me and my sister were the ones swing dancing during the break between sets behind the sound/lights/crappy video monitor that didn't work booth.
right but...thats not much of a difference for people to be complaining about it!
It's all relative, I guess. I think a 30 + difference is significant. If they are "co-headlining", I thought the time would be the same. Three more PJ songs, maybe one would have been "Rats" (please play tonight!).
Or, I'd take this--Knock 20 minutes of of the set up for Petty and give that time to PJ. Petty is still a bit longer, but PJ easilly eclipses that 90 minute mark, so I'm content.
(Does the set up really need to take an hour?)
I cannot come up with a new sig till I get this egg off my face.

that was a bit ridiculous, but the old ladies with mullets need tobe ushered in for pettys set.
I thought Pearl Jam's set was rather tame -- they really seemed to be catering to the combined crowd, rather than their diehard fans. Their set felt like a greatest hits recording... I'm not complaining, because it's always better live, but I wouldn't have minded hearing some of the songs they soundchecked or more of their new stuff.
Petty was fun for the first 5 or 6 songs. Then it was just a gratituous Petty love-fest. He wasted to much time on stage with his arms spread wide as if to beckon louder and louder cheering for him. AND, his ass is not hot, so please don't turn around and shake it so much. Speaking of shaking, was anyone else laughing as hard as I was for the song with the moraccas? I've never seen anything so ridiculous in my life. I guess it was neat to see a legend perform live, but Petty needs to get over himself and do something else with his fame besides feed his ego.
Unfortunately, the encore wasn't really worth waiting through the long TP set. Ed sang on one verse -- I was hoping for a more meaningful collaboration. Oh well.
My take: I paid nearly twice as much for a ticket for half a show.
Sure PJ's set was short, and filled with some of their more well-known hits - but everything was played at such a white-hot, blistering intensity it was hard not to be blown away.
The only highlights of the Petty set was the Fleetwood Mac cover and Ed singing off his crib sheet on American Girl.
I realize I shouldn't complain - but I'm pissed that the shows in my town were cut short. I don't have the luxury of traveling to other shows.
But Matt's Evenflow solo is easily making me forget some of the horrors of the Petty set.

All I can say is that I wish I was going again tonight. It was the first time I've seen Pearl Jam live and it was awesome. I wasn't as excited about Petty's performance but it was still good. Would've been even better if the color screen didn't malfunction. Hopefully it won't be too long until PJ plays in this area again, hopefully not co-headlining.

No way. PJ was 7:30 until about 8:50. 80 Minutes. Tom Petty was 9:50 (yes a one hour set up) until about 11:40 or 11:45. 110 to 115 minutes.
right but...thats not much of a difference for people to be complaining about it!
And seriously, it was unbelievable the mullets around me. i love the way 45-50 year old moms dance. hilarious.

(Does the set up really need to take an hour?)
that was a bit ridiculous, but the old ladies with mullets need tobe ushered in for pettys set.
Oh well.
