1. HARTFORD by far, without a freaking doubt, just wow.
2. Brooklyn 2
3. Brooklyn 1 / Worcester 2
Ed did say during Alive in Hartford, "unfuckinbelieveable!" or something. Never felt energy like that from a crowd before. Loudest concert I've ever been to.
was hartford 13 louder crowd than philly (spectrum?) 03?
[actually curious here, sounds like it *may* have been]
also.
are we now saying "loudest" equals "best"?
did the hartford crowd sing Sirens so long Ed had to re start the song? (see here)
:P
Having seen PJ almost 90 times now, the spectrum in '03 always stood out as the loudest show (crowd wise) I have ever seen. I regret not going to Hartford this year (haven't missed a conn show since '96) but a torn achillies tendon fucks up your tour plans pretty bad. Did see both Brooklyn shows and night 2 was impressive.

There is an audience recording on Dime, Ed was in shock most of the night.
After Last Exit: "Oh, god damn, that was quite a reception, this is ah... ah... We're gonna have to work real hard tonight to deserve what you just gave us."
Before Sirens: "Cheers!.... Hey ah, I was just thinking, I was thinking, you know, if you're surfing. You know you can be a really good surfer, but if the waves are shit, its hard to be a good surfer if the waves are shit, even if you're a great surfer already. So, the thing is, these are like some of the best waves we've ridden all tour. This energy.... So what I'm saying, is even a tiny little shit band like us can sound pretty good with you guys here."
After first encore break: "I'll tell you the truth, we were in the back just saying this is incredible, incredible crowd what great crowd, this is really incredible. And ah, then we were like, oh fuck, there still out there, we better get out there...."
Crowd takes over the chorus during Alive and Ed shouts "Fucking Unbelievable"
Indifference starts: "I mean, this not, this is not normal... I mean its..... I will light the match this morning..."
Philly 1 was amazing -- I mean, Monday night and all and people were crazy.
But then there was Hartford -- three hours of people not leaving for beers, singing/yelling their lungs out, even up in the rafters. The whole place was on its feet.
For everyone upthread arguing Bk2 vs. C'ville, Hartford wins this one. I couldn't even hear Ed half the time.

Hartford was an amazing experience I will never forget. EVERY person there seemed as excited as I was to be there! Never been to any concert where I could say that. I was on the floor and just kept looking up and around in amazement at the crowd. Incredible!

I was only at Philly 1 from this leg, but I've seen PJ 25 times now. Philly 1 was a top 5 experience for me, and I've been to some incredible shows (Spectrum '03, Spectrum '09 Halloween show, PJ20 Alpine Valley, Borgata '05, Va Beach '00 first show after Roskilde).
The energy in the crowd was fantastic and your point of it being a Monday night should be taken into consideration. The only other early weekday show (it was a Monday or a Tuesday) I've been to was Newark in '10 and it would rank dead last on my 25 shows in terms of crowd energy.
"Darkness comes in waves, tell me, why invite it to stay?"
My $.02 on the loudest crowd from this tour. I was scheduled for 5 shows, however, got shout out of BK2 due to the price of tickets from scalpers. For me, Hartford jumps into my top 3 out of the 35 shows I've seen over the years. Although it's been 15yrs, I still think the loudest show I've seen was MSG 9/11/98. I remember singing at the top of my lungs and barely being able to hear myself...kind of like when you fly and your ears get plugged. Boston Garden 94 and all MSG shows are usually at the top of my East Coast swing.
HARTFORD (cannot put into words how fun this show was!!)
Brooklyn 1 (seemed a little louder than Wor based on more ppl at end of each song)
Worcester 1&2 (not as loud but crowd seemed more into the songs than BK1)
Hartford 13 is below only Philly 3 09 and MSG 10 for best crowds I have ever been a part of (this includes any band)
I'd rank Hartford over Philly 3 09. Philly 1 this tour was similar to the third Spectrum show in terms of crowd energy and fantastic setlist, but IMO Hartford was the louder crowd. I think Philly 1 had the best setlist of the shows I saw, but the folks in Hartford were louder (and less drunk, even though it was Friday) than the Philly crowd.
Both shows were just unbelievably good, though.
To the person upthread who mentioned Newark 2010: Yeah, that was such a miserable day. Maybe everyone was as cold and wet as I was. I brought the energy, but a lot of people in the upper level were seated, and there was a real "I have to go to work tomorrow" atmosphere. It's too bad, because I thought that was a really interesting setlist. The show felt awfully short, though, after the Spectrum shows.
All those who seek to destroy the liberties of a democratic nation ought to know that war is the surest and shortest means to accomplish it.
Brooklyn 2 was the 11th show I've been to, and was blown away. . . . setlist, crowd, band's energy. . . . venue it was just unbelievable and I never thought it would be topped. . . . . . .
Then I went to Hartford the following Friday.
Holy Crap.
I can't speak for Charlottesville, or Philly, any spectrum shows or any of that, but what I can say, is that in over 22 years of seeing live music, I've never seen a crowd like Hartford 13, nor have I ever seen a band react to a crowd like that.
Hands down, one of the most special nights / crowds I've ever been a part of.
Hartford, Hartford, Hartford. Just as un-fucking-believable as Ed said we were!
That crowd was nuts, maybe even louder than MSG2 2010. Happy to have been a part of it!

I was at both Brooklyn shows, Philly 2, and Hartford.
Hartford was my 30th show. Of all my shows, starting w/Randall's Island 1 in '96, Hartford was, far and away, the loudest, most intense crowd I've ever seen at a PJ show. It was truly amazing.
Hartford was pretty much just as loud and crazy in 2010. I was not surprised at all this time. I was blown away in 2010, after having only experienced the prior 2 Hartford outdoors shows. check out 2010 Nothingman. Or of course OTOTO I
its fun reading this back on forth what was the best show. of course I didn't make it any of them , but its hard to believe all these people who went to these concerts and must have sat on their hands. How do you stay quiet at a PJ show. These set list have been amazing. Now I realize that there were also many fans who screamed, shouted and danced their asses off, but it does seem to be a common theme from reviews by fans on here that crowds were tame at different venues. I know "we" are all getting older but come on. I would have loved to be at any of these concerts. PJ doing there part, but crowd has to do theirs. PJ keep bringing it and fans FANUP for 2nd leg!!!
Also anyone who would like to finance me and my wife making it to a concert on 2nd leg IM me.

In terms of best show I will never be able to make up my mind between Brooklyn 2 and Charlottesville. Brooklyn 2 was insane, flowing, band on fire, drummer cooking, crowd incredible, last exit/in hiding absolute madness, Band tops!
Charlottesville was special, intimate, insane set, I got my request for Thumbing fulfilled by the band, cosy, welcoming, homely....my best show of 15

BK 2 (by far)
Baltimore
Charlottesville (Best set list, but audience couldn't even match Baltimore's)
one more reason to pick up that boot.
