can i get an "OMG MIKE ON BACKING VOCALS?"

Not from me. I think thats why it sounded weak. Sounds better with Matt doing it in the video.
"I'll tell you what: If all I had was Pearl Jam, and I didn't have another band in the world, I would not be worried. Because in there is the essence of making great music. You don't have to use it all at once, but it's there." - Neil Young

I heard the shakiness, but it didn't take away anything from the song or performance.
I've been fortunate enough to see Pearl Jam live.

I am hanging in the balance of a perfect finished plan

  • Ed sounded fine. What are you people talking about? Shaky? Is PJ the most criticized band of all time? Really, cut some slack for these guys every once in awhile. Good performance. Band was tight.

I can see where people are getting at with the "Shaky" in his voice in the beginning, but at the end he really nailed it.

I loved the way the lights looked, and Ed was dressed very snazzy...... :)

I was surprised that Mike was on backup was well...maybe there were issues with Matt's Mic....it didn't even look it he had one...I will agree, Matt is stronger on the vocals.

Overall, great performance! I'll be staying up tonight to watch them, can't wait! From the pictures posted on Twitter/Instagram...it looks like they'll be playing Lighting Bolt, which is awesome since it's one of my favorites from the new album.

PEARL JAM- 12/6/13 I have finally seen Pearl Jam live!
  • Decent performance of an OK song. Now, play "Getaway" god dammit. They'll play "Lightning Bolt" tonight, tho.

I wonder if the "shakiness" has something to do with switching from playing arenas to a teeny tiny studio, almost literally overnight. I would imagine there is a major difference in how one commands one voice in those settings.

Alternatively I wonder how big of a role the wine plays. Maybe Fallon should've cracked a bottle of red instead of those eggs on his head, it's entirely possible that the wine would help.

I just hope he ain't getting sick again cuz Hartford!

Anyone catch what Ed's tshirt said?

maybe he should have grabbed the gatorade bottle instead of the wine bottle. ;)
i'm more a fan of popular bands.. like the bee-gees, pearl jam

mike's been singing backup on that all tour. i also agree that matt should be singing instead.

  • Mike did great; that's something brand new basically for him to be that featured in a backup vocal spot, and he's doing it for a national audience....he did great.

    :clap::clap::clap::clap:

Tomorrow's guests: Javier Bardem (big Pj fan) Eddie Vedder and Pearl Jam. i'm hoping Ed's interview is interesting....can't wait ....

Sirens sounded fine. I haven't been checking up on the versions from this tour, but that is NOT an easy song to sing by any measure. Good version.

    We're so spoiled this year.

    cheers

i love PJ more than anyone, but whenever Ed is on tv his voice sounds really shaky ala Comfortably Numb, Mother, Sirens, etc. Just doesn't sound as great as it usually does at a show. He killed Sirens at BKN 1, 2, and Philly 2

True . . not sure if the TV studio audio set up doesn't work for him but he DOES sound shaky and almost "out of tune" sometimes .. I noticed that back when they played SNL just after Backspacer came out . . . he didn't sound great there either. TV doesn't seem to suit his voice for some reason. :(

Sounded to me like he just wasn't hitting the notes. He did improve later in the song, but early on....yuck.

The sound for alot of TV performances can seem off, but compared to the previous performances, PJ's sound just came off flat to me. Around the first chorus, I looked at my wife and said "not sounding too good".

LOL, is Eddie wearing a rainbow loom bracelet on his right hand? If so, best dad ever.

    I thought the same thing!
It looks like a gift he got for Father's day or something since there are two of them. :)

Whenever Ed's pitch is slightly off, he's aware of it, so I assume he's either stressed in some way or his body isn't co-operating.

When it's a national TV performance in the middle of a tour, there's probably a bit of both things going on!!!!!!!!

I always enjoy seeing them on TV no matter what. :)

It almost seems that Ed holds back a little bit in settings like this (small and quiet). The man's natural habitat is an arena for sure :)

Still - after the first little bit he sounded good, and I'm not gonna nitpick. At least it's friggin' real.
