i love PJ more than anyone, but whenever Ed is on tv his voice sounds really shaky ala Comfortably Numb, Mother, Sirens, etc. Just doesn't sound as great as it usually does at a show. He killed Sirens at BKN 1, 2, and Philly 2

True . . not sure if the TV studio audio set up doesn't work for him but he DOES sound shaky and almost "out of tune" sometimes .. I noticed that back when they played SNL just after Backspacer came out . . . he didn't sound great there either. TV doesn't seem to suit his voice for some reason. :(

Sounded to me like he just wasn't hitting the notes. He did improve later in the song, but early on....yuck.

The sound for alot of TV performances can seem off, but compared to the previous performances, PJ's sound just came off flat to me. Around the first chorus, I looked at my wife and said "not sounding too good".

LOL, is Eddie wearing a rainbow loom bracelet on his right hand? If so, best dad ever.

    I thought the same thing!
It looks like a gift he got for Father's day or something since there are two of them. :)

I was surprised that Mike was on backup was well...maybe there were issues with Matt's Mic....it didn't even look it he had one...I will agree, Matt is stronger on the vocals.

mike's been singing backup on that all tour. i also agree that matt should be singing instead.

You mean for Sirens or just in general?

Whenever Ed's pitch is slightly off, he's aware of it, so I assume he's either stressed in some way or his body isn't co-operating.

When it's a national TV performance in the middle of a tour, there's probably a bit of both things going on!!!!!!!!

I always enjoy seeing them on TV no matter what. :)

It almost seems that Ed holds back a little bit in settings like this (small and quiet). The man's natural habitat is an arena for sure :)

Still - after the first little bit he sounded good, and I'm not gonna nitpick. At least it's friggin' real.

Honestly at the three shows I've been too this is how ed sounded. It's gonna be better at the arena for numerous reasons but this is how ed sounds on the song. It's pretty obvious to me that the vocals on the sirens video they put out were done over. It's a hard song to sing. I think they would have been better off staying uptempo for the tv appearances. Oh well. See you in Hartford tonight!

Yup,thought Ed was a little out of tune-shakey at first. But it's great to see them on tv.
Would have preferred a different song.
One thing though-how often do you hear the guests and host going on and on about the featured band? Before they perform!
Looking forward to tonight.Lightning Bolt-kick it up a notch.

From reading these posts I feel like I'm watching American Idol (Simon you on here?) with all of the criticism of Ed. I guess I am the Paula Abdul of the group. I loved his voice and Mike's voice.

 Some people can admit when PJ isn't at their best. Ed was out of tune and the band didn't sound great.

I coudn't hear Mike enough to decide if he sounded ok or not, but I do know the last chorus was really missing the high harmony.

My point is A. it's not a singing competition (ala American Idol) and B. The days of Eddie's 90's voice is long gone. We are watching Pearl Jam and actors are booking slots with nothing to promote just to see them. They are the Beatles and Stones of our generation, I just enjoy them for who they are.

But see sometimes a not perfect technical performance played with feel and emotion is better than a perfect technical performance. This is basically what I saw last night. I'll take emotion/feel/energy over a flawless technical performance every day of the weak. I've seen a lot of fantastic musicians who suck live because the energy or beauty just isn't there. On the flip side i've seen a lot of average musicians who play with passion and are fucking awesome live. Sirens is not an easy song to play or sing, but ended up beautiful nonetheless.

Wow, I thought he absolutely killed it on "Comfortably Numb." I was so prepared to be disappointed with that, but I was blown away.

I think he was definitely struggling on that performance. As a singer I can totally relate, some nights your voice is strained and you feel like every note is a struggle. Other times you go through streaks where you are totally flawless no matter what abuse you give to your vocal chords. He's in the middle of a tour, that has to be killer on your voice. Nowadays I only sing my daughter to sleep and I still have "performances" that are mediocre compared to flawless ones. Try singing 3 hours a night and it has to be murder!

I still think with a strained voice Ed beats most singers out there hands down. Heart and soul baby!!

Ed's voice is better than ever. He seemed a little 'off' at first, but like others have said, probably a TV thing. I love, love, love Sirens, it's a great PJ song.
