I guess we only help countries that have oil.
Bosnia? Are you serious? You sat back and watched them get slaughtered, after imposing a ban on weapons sales to the Bosnians so that they couldn't defend themselves.
Next you'll be lauding the great job you did in Rwanda.
What did anyone else do? Isn't that the point of this topic, but as far as I can tell no matter what good the USA does you always try to play to the contrary. I might not post a lot but I do read a lot on here. That seems to be your MO.
What did anyone else do? Nothing. Because they were all blocked from doing anything at the U.N. And we know who pulls the strings at the U.N, don't we?
Why did you include Bosnia an Kosovo in your post above? Do you actually know anything about what happened, and didn't happen, over there?0 -

A very long story but after 6 months she came home. It took a very long time for her to recover from that. She was very idealistic and wanted to make a difference. Now she is a special education teacher and is making a difference in her own country helping children. She thinks the Peace Corp went about this education to the villages in Zambia the wrong way. Americans did not understand their culture and did not understand that these people did not want to be told what to do.
How was she not accepted? What happened? I thought the Peace Corps had a pretty good success rate, and established, workable programs, around the World? Though I read recently that most Peace Corps volunteers feel that they got more out the experience than they gave.0 -

Greece is A 10 million country USA 320 millions..32 times more...
Greece sent 118 trrops..usa 775..is like what 7 times more..??
now do the maths....lets put the analogy..
usa should sent 118 x 32 times = 3776 and not only 775
or if 775 usa sent Grecce should sent 32 times less manpower, and its 24 men and not 118..
you talked about 7000 total usa sent there..this number 7000 is the 50% of the men and women serve the whole Greek Airforce..
of course we cant sent the half of Greek Airforce manpower to a peace force out of our country..
you can just throw number to show us usa sent more..cos its not ..Bigger country sent more ..its logic..
but with the analogy of the population each country has,be sure Greece sent more troops at kosovo than usa.
and be sure,we dont feel brave or brag or any kind of special that we helped another counbtry..is what countries should do to eachother...
no need to mention, our troops went there, didnt get any extra money as they promised them..they fool them in the end..

A much better approach is to ask yourself what YOU are doing to help people around the world and stop worrying about what others are doing.
Also, there isn't a point in taking pride in what America is doing if you're not personally doing anything yourself.

One among many.
Many are calling this a civil war and make comparisons to our civil war. Which , if memory serves, was about splitting the country in two. The south was receiving help from the brits at that time. So helping one side or the other (in our case, receiving it) is not unprecedented,
I dont think I've heard that the FSA want to split the country in half , but rather seek Assads ouster instead which sounds more like, to me, as a revolution. On THAT note we, fledgling country we hoped to be back then, sought and accepted help from france to throw the yoke of British tyranny off our shoulders , did we not?_____________________________________SIGNATURE________________________________________________

I am not putting down the Peace Corp. They have done good in some countries. However, there is plenty about the Peace Corp that is not publicized. They had never been in Zambia before. The 22 volunteers that my daughter was with were the first to ever enter that country. After 2 weeks of training, they placed them with host families for two weeks and then off to their assignment. My daughter was placed in an extremely remote village. Hours away from the main city, yet she was told to attend meetings once a month in the main city. She is given a bike to ride. When asked how to get to these meetings without any real form of transportation, she was told to hitch hike, but at the same time told that hitch hiking was against the Peace Corp rules. She is like well this does not make sense. Then as she starts to train the villagers about AIDS, it was made perfectly clear to her by the men in the village to stay out of their business. The men did not want to be told to wear condoms by some (I do not mean to sound racist here at all- so do not take this wrong). This is what she was told. She was told we do not want some young white women to tell us how to have sex. As time went on, she decided to let go of the subject for a while. She decided to back off and just assimilate herself into the village. She decided to help them garden, learn to be more self- sufficient. That was received better. She realized maybe I just need to get them to trust me first etc. As time went on, the women and children were friendly, but never the men. As she tried to get to the main city in Zambia, she was nearly raped and then she realized- get me the hell out of here!!! Many women volunteers in the Peace Corp are raped and the Peace Corp covers it up all the time. OF course when they are selling the Peace Corp, you do not hear about this. Many meetings you go to- give the parents a handbook of what to do when your child calls home and says- I want out, to try to talk them into staying etc. And they advertise they are such a reputible organization. My daughter will tell you, that her training did not prepare her for the reception she received in her village. It was perfectly clear to her, she was not welcome. In those remote villages, the men are in charge. That is their culture. So my point was, Americans cannot always make things right. Americans need to understand other cultures and not be so judgemental towards other cultures that are different. Ofcourse, I want AIDS to be lessened all over the world, but you cannot just go into a country with their own values and culture and think that Americans living in a country for four weeks are ready to go out to remote villages and touch on such a sensitive subject. My daughter is a very sweet young lady, so I am sure she was only trying to educate about the spread of AIDS. Her minor was public health, so she was also trying to educate the woman about more sanitary ways to prepare food. They simply were not ready to receive this info. So other cultures may look at Americans as budinskies. My brother in law was in Jamaica with the Peace Corp for two years and it was extremely positive. So obviously your experience depends on were you are and how long the Peace Corp has been in that country.0 -

the wikileaks documents show that the failures in those zones are largely covered up ...
obviously - these failures are probably more attributable to the command centre but at the end of the day - these soldiers think they are going in to free people and a lot of them realize that isn't the case ...0 -
