How awesome is Rival?

Wow I didn't know that statistic, now I feel really special.
I honestly think that the reason we don't hear these songs is because Stone is such a perfectionist and he's afraid something will go wrong. Think of Mankind at Philly 1 2009, I was there and it sounded perfect, no missed lyrics and nothing musically went wrong as far as I could tell but still afterword he seemed really upset with the performance saying something along the lines of "fuck we should have practiced that more".
My guess is something like this, Ed says "which off the wall song should we do tonight? how about Rival?" and Stone turns it down immediately because they haven't rehearsed it or anything.0 -

Here's why it's awesome:
1) The intro: I mean the dog growl is so cool and its such a catchy way to begin a song
2) Matt's drumming: very basic of course, but it leads off the song into such a heavy backbeat
3) main riff: It's kinda got a bluesy, pendulum hook thing going on and it matches great with Ed's singing
4) Ed's part: kinda the same thing as the main riff, it's got this hook on the verses that you just can't help but love
there ya go me amigos

RiotZact wrote:This song NEVER gets talked about so I figured I would give it some love during a crazy time on the Porch. The riff is so simple yet so awesome, the lyrics are some of Stone's best, the addition of the piano is genius and the overall structure of the song is so original and unpredictable. And, along with most of the other songs on Binural, Matt couldn't have drummed it better, especially at the beginning.
I would probably put it in my ever changing top 10 in easily in the top 3 most underrated Pearl Jam songs.
When I listen to Binural and hear Thin Air, then one track later hear Of the Girl, then one more later hear Rival it really makes me get down on my knees and pray that there is a couple of completely Stone written songs on the next album. Although it is unlikely considering it hasn't happened in 13 years. :(

I love Rival. I guess with gun crime being a consistently topical subject they choose to keep it in the closet for the most part but it's a really great, catchy, well structured song from a great album. I'd love to hear it live but going to as little shows as I do I doubt I'll strike it lucky.Like a book among the many on a shelf...

Yeah I saw it at Philly 1 2009 but that was long before I appreciated it as much as I do now :( If only I could relive that moment.
Glad to see this thread getting plenty of love amidst all of the album/tour/countdown/Chicago craziness!
Wow - was just thinking the same thing! I was also at Philly I and wish I had the appreciation of it then that I do now..
Listening to my random PJ mix in the car and Rival comes one. Probably heard it hundreds of times. But today, for some reason it caught my attention more than ever before and now it's the "new" old song I can't get enough of. Had to listen to it 3 more times even though I was already home and the car was in the garage :geek:
The last PJ song I felt like this about was "In Hiding" and I was lucky that I was crazy in love with it at the time that I got to see it live in STL in 2010.Pepsi Center - Apr 1 '03, Jul 2-3 '06 | Grant Park - Aug 05 '07 | E Center - Sep 28 '09 | Wachovia Spectrum Arena - Oct 27 '09 | Sprint Center May 3 '10 | Scottrade Center May 4 '10 | Alpine Valley - Sep 3-4, '11 | Wrigley Field - July 19, '13 | Pepsi Center Oct 22, '140 -

Yeah this 100% sums up how I feel about the song. Came on in my car a month or so ago and it caught my attention like it never did before after hearing it many many times.
If I could time travel back to 5 points in my life, the moment they played Rival would defiantly be the first thing that would come to mind, as pathetic as it may sound it's true!0 -
Just checked, I never heard it live either. But man, this song is growing on me lately, like weeds in a well-watered garden whose owners are on vacation. Funny, it feels the same for me like what the person who replied to the post above my post said
I would LOVE to catch this one at the fall tour. I dig the Pink Pop version, but the studio version is fantastic too. Somehow, the piano brings a Beatles song to my mind, but I have forgotten which one (edit: I Want To Tell You it is). It happens not so often, but I love how somehow sometimes a song pops up and BAM - I'm totally infatuated, even though I never thought it was special before. I love the overall dirty, lazy groove. Badass song. Please, Pearl Jam, consider a Benaroya Hall vinyl reissue! http://community.pearljam.com/discussion/148993/please-pearl-jam-consider-a-vinyl-benaroya-hall-re-issue0 -
This is one of my favorite songs!
I'll do everything I know how to to try and get this song played this tour0 -
