Yeah I saw it at Philly 1 2009 but that was long before I appreciated it as much as I do now :( If only I could relive that moment.
Glad to see this thread getting plenty of love amidst all of the album/tour/countdown/Chicago craziness!
Wow - was just thinking the same thing! I was also at Philly I and wish I had the appreciation of it then that I do now..
Listening to my random PJ mix in the car and Rival comes one. Probably heard it hundreds of times. But today, for some reason it caught my attention more than ever before and now it's the "new" old song I can't get enough of. Had to listen to it 3 more times even though I was already home and the car was in the garage :geek:
The last PJ song I felt like this about was "In Hiding" and I was lucky that I was crazy in love with it at the time that I got to see it live in STL in 2010.

Yeah this 100% sums up how I feel about the song. Came on in my car a month or so ago and it caught my attention like it never did before after hearing it many many times.
If I could time travel back to 5 points in my life, the moment they played Rival would defiantly be the first thing that would come to mind, as pathetic as it may sound it's true!
Just checked, I never heard it live either. But man, this song is growing on me lately, like weeds in a well-watered garden whose owners are on vacation. Funny, it feels the same for me like what the person who replied to the post above my post said
I would LOVE to catch this one at the fall tour. I dig the Pink Pop version, but the studio version is fantastic too. Somehow, the piano brings a Beatles song to my mind, but I have forgotten which one (edit: I Want To Tell You it is). It happens not so often, but I love how somehow sometimes a song pops up and BAM - I'm totally infatuated, even though I never thought it was special before. I love the overall dirty, lazy groove. Badass song.
Please, Pearl Jam, consider a Benaroya Hall vinyl reissue!
I love Binaural overall, but Rival is a song that I think really misses the mark on several levels. For instance, it strikes me as really weird to see Ed dancing around during this song given the content of the lyrics. The mood of the music seems to contrast starkly with the subject matter being addressed. I'm confused by this one because I feel like they nailed everything incredibly well with a song like Jeremy and then tank on a song like Rival.
Certainly in my top 10 I hope to hear live. Love that opening riff combo between the drum intro and when the guitar first comes in. Interesting, well written lyrics too. Been listening to many live versions from 2000 here lately, so far Milan 00 has one of the best versions of Rival. Hope that link works.
Rival is one of my absolute favorite Pearl Jam songs. It bums me out that they don't play it really. I love the quirky bluesy riff, it reminds me of Deep and Half Full, two of my other favorites.

I'm glad a thread got made about Rival.
That is my favorite song on Binaural and it's one I still haven't seen live...

I have a Rival license plate, too....but a NY one
for her to come home

darkness leaves the dawn
